Myxomycetes from Israel IV

Ten taxa of myxomycetes growing mainly withEucalyptus, oak and pine are described. They were found in Upper Galilee, Mt. Carmel and Central parts of the country and all are new to Israel.     

Four new species of Cayaponia (Cucurbitaceae) from Brazil and Bolivia

Four new species ofCayaponia are described and illustrated: three from Brazil (C. cogniauxiana, C. nitida andC. rugosa) and one from Brazil and Bolivia (C. ferruginea).     

Description of Careproctus guillemi n. sp. (Pisces: Scorpaeniformes) from Weddell Sea

Careproctus guillemi differs from the other Careproctus species in the following combination of characters: pectoral fin rays 22 (11 + 4+7); pectoral girdle with three round radials (1 + 0+ 1 + 1); mouth oblique and maxillary extending beyond posterior edge of eye. Relationships between C. guillemi and C. longipectoralis are provided. The endochondral pectoral girdle of C. longipectoralis is described for the first time.     

Calabaria and the phytogeny of erycine snakes

Two major subgroups of erycine snakes, designated Charina and Eryx , are delimited with a cladistic analysis of 75 morphological characters. The hypotheses of species relationships within the two clades are ( reinhardtii ( bottae, trivirgata )) and ( colubrinus, conicus, elegans, jayakari, muelleri, somalicus ( miliaris ( tataricus ( jaculus, johnii )))), respectively. This pattern of grouping obtains without assuming multistate character additivity. At least 16 synapomorphies indicate that reinhardtii is an erycine and that it is the sister lineage of the ( bottae, trivirgata ) clade. Calabaria and Lichanura are synonymized with Charina for reasons of taxonomic efficiency, and to emphasize the New-Old World geographic distribution of the three species in that assemblage. Further resolution of Eryx species relationships is required before Gongylophis (type species conicus ) can be recognized.     

Nuttallia balearicae sp. n., an Avian Piroplasm from Crowned Cranes (Balearica spp.)

An avian piroplasm, Nuttallia balearicae sp. n., is described from captive Balearica p. pavonina and B. p. gibbericeps. Other avian piroplasms and their validity and taxonomic status are discussed. The possible route of transmission of these parasites is also considered.
