Within populations of broadcast spawning marine invertebrates such as scallops, larger animals typically have larger gonads. Presumably, this means those larger males have more sperm to release than small males. However, there has never been a direct test of whether larger males actually release more sperm, at a higher rate, during spawning. To address this, we compared the allometry of induced sperm release with that of reproductive investment (gonad weight) in ripe males of 2 species of scallops, Chlamys bifrons and Chlamys asperrima. We did not find that larger scallops released more sperm or released it faster than small scallops, and were able to reject the hypothesis that instantaneous sperm release was related to body size in the same way as gonad weight. Consequently, we speculate that if larger broadcast spawning males do release more sperm, they may do so by spawning on more occasions within a reproductive season.  相似文献

Biodiversity is the diversity of life at all scales, from genes to ecosystems. Predicting its patterns of variation across the globe is a fundamental issue in ecology and evolution. Diversity within species, that is, genetic diversity, is of prime importance for understanding past and present evolutionary patterns, and highlighting areas where conservation might be a priority. Using published data on the genetic diversity of species whose populations occur in the Mediterranean basin, we calculated a coefficient of correlation between within‐population genetic diversity indices and longitude. Using a meta‐analysis framework, we estimated the role of biological, ecological, biogeographic, and marker type factors on the strength and magnitude of this correlation in six phylla. Overall, genetic diversity increases from west to east in the Mediterranean basin. This correlation is significant for both animals and plants, but is not uniformly expressed for all groups. It is stronger in the southern than in the northern Mediterranean, in true Mediterranean plants than in plants found at higher elevations, in trees than in other plants, and in bi‐parentally and paternally than in maternally inherited DNA makers. Overall, this correlation between genetic diversity and longitude, and its patterns across biological and ecological traits, suggests the role of two non‐mutually exclusive major processes that shaped the genetic diversity in the Mediterranean during and after the cold periods of the Pleistocene: east‐west recolonization during the Holocene and population size contraction under local Last Glacial Maximum climate in resident western and low elevation Mediterranean populations.  相似文献

FoxC, FoxF, FoxL1 and FoxQ1 genes have been shown to be clustered in some animal genomes, with mesendodermal expression hypothesised as a selective force maintaining cluster integrity. Hypotheses are, however, constrained by a lack of data from the Lophotrochozoa. Here we characterise members of the FoxC, FoxF, FoxL1 and FoxQ1 families from the annelid Capitella teleta and the molluscs Lottia gigantea and Patella vulgata. We cloned FoxC, FoxF, FoxL1 and FoxQ1 genes from C. teleta, and FoxC, FoxF and FoxL1 genes from P. vulgata, and established their expression during development. We also examined their genomic organisation in C. teleta and L. gigantea, and investigated local syntenic relationships. Our results show mesodermal and anterior gut expression is a common feature of these genes in lophotrochozoans. In L. gigantea FoxC, FoxF and FoxL1 are closely linked, while in C. teleta Ct-foxC and Ct-foxL1 are closely linked, with Ct-foxF and Ct-foxQ1 on different scaffolds. Adjacent to these genes there is limited evidence of local synteny. This demonstrates conservation of genomic organisation and expression of these genes can be traced in all three bilaterian Superphyla. These data are evaluated against competing theories for the long-term maintenance of gene clusters.  相似文献

This study investigated the genetic and chemical basis of resistance of Pinus sylvestris seedlings to herbivory by a generalist mollusc, Arion ater. Using feeding trials with captive animals, we examined selective herbivory by A. ater of young P. sylvestris seedlings of different genotypes and correlated preferences with seedling monoterpene levels. We also investigated the feeding responses of A. ater to artificial diets laced with two monoterpenes, Δ3-carene and α-pinene. Logistic regression indicated that two factors were the best predictors of whether seedlings in the trial would be consumed. Individual slug variation (replicates) was the most significant factor in the model; however, α-pinene concentration (also representing β-pinene, Δ3-carene and total monoterpenes due to multicollinearity) of needles was also a significant factor. While A. ater did not select seedlings on the basis of family, seedlings not eaten were significantly higher in levels of α-pinene compared to seedlings that were consumed. We also demonstrated significant genetic variation in α-pinene concentration of seedlings between different families of P. sylvestris. Nitrogen and three morphological seedling characteristics (stem length, needle length and stem diameter) also showed significant genetic variation between P. sylvestris families. Artificial diets laced with high (5 mg g−1 dry matter) quantities of either Δ3-carene or α-pinene, were eaten significantly less than control diets with no added monoterpenes, supporting the results of the seedling feeding trial. This study demonstrates that A. ater selectively feed on P. sylvestris seedlings and that this selection is based, in part, on the monoterpene concentration of seedlings. These results, coupled with significant genetic variation in α-pinene concentration of seedlings and evidence that slug herbivory is detrimental to P. sylvestris fitness, are discussed as possible evidence for A. ater as a selective force on the evolution of defensive chemistry in P. sylvestris.  相似文献

We cloned and analysed the expression of a SoxB gene (PvuSoxB) in the marine mollusc, Patella vulgata. Like its orthologues in deuterostomes, after an early broad ectodermal distribution, PvuSoxB expression only persists in cells competent to form neural structures. In the post-gastrulation larva, PvuSoxB is expressed in the prospective neuroectoderm in the head and in the trunk. No expression can be seen dorsally, around the mouth and the anus, or along the ventral midline. We also report the expression of a Wnt2/13 orthologue (PvuWnt2) in Patella. After gastrulation, PvuWnt2 is expressed in the posterior part of the mouth, along the ventral midline and around the anus. This expression seems to be complementary to that of PvuSoxB in the trunk. We suggest the existence of a fundamental subdivision of the Patella trunk ectoderm into midline (mouth, midline, anus) and more lateral structures.Edited by D. Tautz  相似文献

Antioxidant defense system in the apple snail eggs, the role of ovorubin   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A novel role of ovorubin as a protection system against oxidative damage in eggs from Pomacea canaliculata was investigated. Carotenoid composition, and their antioxidant capacity, as well as the carotenoid-apoprotein interaction, were studied for this lipoglycocarotenoprotein. Carotenoid extracts from ovorubin were analysed by TLC and spectrophotometry. The major carotenoid was astaxanthin in its free (40%), monoester (24%), and diester (35%) forms, mainly esterified with 16:0 fatty acid. The antioxidant capacity of ovorubin carotenoids was studied by the inhibition of microsomal oxidation in a non-enzymatic system, showing strong protection against oxidative damage (IC50=3.9 nmol/mg protein). The carotenoid-apoprotein interaction was studied by spectrophotometry and electrophoresis using reconstituted ovorubin. Astaxanthin does not seem to affect the structural characteristics of ovorubin, however the carotenoid-protein association significantly protected astaxanthin against oxidation. Ovorubin therefore, besides its role in providing energy and structural precursors during embryogenesis, would be an antioxidant carrier, protecting at the same time this pigment from oxidation in the perivitellin fluid environment of the egg.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the morphology of the parenchymal mass and function of the albumen gland/capsule gland complex have been studied in Pomacea canaliculata, together with the cellular types involved in the synthesis and secretion of perivitellin fluid components. The two major parenchymal cell types, albumen secretory cells (AS) and labyrinthic cells (LC), undergo seasonal variations throughout the annual reproductive cycle, which is divided into three periods. Both cellular types show maximal development and structural complexity during the reproductive period (spring and summer). AS cells have a well-developed Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum and their secretory granules show electron-dense particles of about 20 nm (probably galactogen). These cells are uniquely involved in ovorubin and PV2 perivitellin synthesis and their secretory granules are the single storage site for these two major perivitellins, as revealed by immunoelectron microscopy. AS also possess calcium deposits that infiltrate the cytoplasmic matrix. The luminal surfaces of LC exhibit long cilia intermingled with sparce short microvilli. Basally, the plasma membrane shows deep irregular folds that extend through the cytoplasm up to the subapical region. Calcium deposits infiltrate the cytoplasm and accumulate in the extracellular space of the basal labyrinth. Nerve terminals seem to be involved in the regulation of parenchymal cell secretion. At the post-reproductive period, AS markedly change their aspect following the release of most of the secretory granules into the acinar lumen. LC decrease in volume, the number of their cilia decreases, their cytoplasmic folds are much thinner and their extracellular spaces lack calcium particles.
