For phototropic curvature of a green sunflower seedling, only the hypocotyl has to be illuminated; the tip and cotyledons are not involved in stimulus perception. The etiolated seedling is phototropically insensitive, illumination of only the hypocotyl renders it sensitive. It is concluded that the photoreceptor is located within the responding organ. In curving seedlings, the endogenous indoleacetic acid (IAA) remains evenly distributed. However, the inhibitor, xanthoxin (Xa), accumulates on the illuminated side. The degree of phototropic response is generally related to the concentration of Xa. The amount of phototropic curvature is independent of the rate of elongation growth, the former can be changed without affecting the latter, and vice versa. The data conflict with the Cholodny-Went theory, whereas they support the hypothesis of Blaauw that the phototropic reaction is caused by the local accumulation of a growth-inhibiting substance on the irradiated side.Abbreviations CCC chlormequat, (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride - GA3 gibberellic acid - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - Xa xanthoxin  相似文献

Vast amounts of research have been done that have attempted to delineate the pharmacological and physiological effects of the endogenous opiate peptides. A great deal of knowledge has also been accumulated in a limited time span concerning the types and locations of the opiate receptors and peptides, as well as their functions. In 1980, reports were made concerning the effects of these peptides on analgesia, on tolerance and dependence, on activity, on learning and memory, on schizophrenia and other types of emotional disturbances, and on physiological responses such as eating and drinking, cardiovascular responses, and sexual function. Additional understanding was also gained concerning their interactions with neurotransmitters, other neuropeptides, and hormones. These and other studies published only in 1980 are reviewed in this paper, which is the third of an annual series.  相似文献

Estrogens exert important actions on fear and anxiety-like behavior both in humans and non-human animals. Currently, the mechanisms underlying estrogenic modulation of fear are not known. However, evidence suggests that estrogens may exert their influence on fear within the amygdala. The purpose of the present study was to examine effects of estrogen on fear conditioning. Specifically, the present study examined whether long-term estrogen treatment in ovariectomized female mice via Silastic capsule implantation would facilitate both contextual and cued fear conditioning. In a separate set of experiments, we then examined whether estrogen treatment in ovariectomized female mice would modulate corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) gene expression within the amygdala. Long-term estrogen treatment facilitated both contextual and cued fear. Ovariectomized mice treated with estrogen froze significantly more to a context as well as to a discrete auditory cue. In addition, estrogen treatment significantly increased CRH mRNA expression within the central nucleus of the amygdala as measured by in situ hybridization and quantitative PCR. These data raise the possibility that estrogens could influence fear responses in females through their actions in the amygdala.  相似文献

Hormone-neurotransmitter interactions form an important link through which hormones influence a variety of behavioral processes. Typically, sexual behavior is dimorphic with males mounting receptive females. In the all-female lizard species Cnemidophorus uniparens, individuals display both male-like pseudocopulation and female-like receptivity. These respective behavioral states are correlated with high circulating concentrations of progesterone following ovulation and of estrogen preceding it. In sexual species, serotonin is involved in male-typical mounting, and, as reported here, in male-like pseudosexual behavior in this unisexual species. In the first study, C. uniparens were ovariectomized and treated systemically with exogenous androgen, a hormonal regimen that results in individuals displaying only male-like pseudosexual behavior. An increase in serotonin levels in the preoptic area coupled with the suppression of male-like pseudocopulation was observed in androgen-treated lizards injected with 5-hydroxytryptophan (the precursor of serotonin) and clorgyline (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor) compared to vehicle-treated controls. Our second experiment involved ovariectomizing lizards and either injecting them with estradiol or implanting them with either an empty (Blank) or a progesterone- or testosterone-containing Silastic capsule. Treatment with para-chlorophenylalanine (an inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase) facilitated male-like pseudosexual behavior depending on the circulating hormonal milieu and decreased serotonin levels in the preoptic area. Our data suggest that serotonin is inhibitory to male-like pseudosexual behavior in C. uniparens but more importantly that the hormonal environment modulates the serotonin system at the level of the preoptic area, with the serotonergic system then establishing behavioral thresholds that allow for this behavior to be "gated".  相似文献

Mechanical stresses play a key role in regulating cell growth and cell differentiation. Using mechanical and physiological data available in the literature, we are able to construct a growth curve of a child, which we compare to the standard curve. It appears likely that the impact of hormones on pubertal growth rate sprout followed by growth arrest can be solely explained by increased mechanical stresses. The uptake of hormones by the muscles results in increased mechanical stress on the chondrocyte before and at the puberty, resulting in a peak in growth followed by growth cessation.  相似文献

Purkinje cells are the principal neurons of the cerebellar cortex and are characterized by a large and highly branched dendritic tree. For this reason, they have for a long time been an attractive model system to study the regulation of dendritic growth and differentiation. In this article, I will first review studies on different aspects of Purkinje cell dendritic development and then go on to present studies which have aimed at experimentally altering Purkinje cell dendritic development. Some of the cellular and molecular mechanisms which have been shown by these studies to be important determinants of Purkinje cell dendritic development will be discussed, in particular the role of the parallel fiber input, of hormones, and of neuronal growth factors. The organotypic slice culture method will be introduced as an important experimental tool to study Purkinje cell dendritic development under controlled conditions. Using cerebellar slice cultures, protein kinase C (PKC) has been identified as a major determinant of Purkinje cell dendritic development and the contribution of specific isoforms of PKC will be discussed. Finally, it will be shown that Purkinje cell dendritic development in slice cultures does not depend on the activation of glutamate receptors and appears to be independent of the presence of the neurotrophin BDNF. These studies indicate that the initial outgrowth of the Purkinje cell dendritic tree can occur in the absence of signals derived from afferent fibers, but is under control of PKC signaling.  相似文献

Two year-old cloned plants of Dendrobium Second Love were submitted to 25 °C (light) and 10 °C (dark) under a 12 h photoperiod (60 μmol m−1 s−1) for 30 days. The endogenous levels of IAA, ABA, and the cytokinins Z, [9R]Z, iP, and [9R]iP were measured 15, 22, and 30 days after the start of the thermoperiodic treatment in lateral buds and leaves. The endogenous levels of IAA and cytokinins, especially the zeatin-derived forms, increased significantly in buds after 15 days of treatment. On the other hand, the amount of ABA decreased progressively and significantly throughout the treatment. The treatment conspicuously accelerated flower-bud development. The found correlation suggests that hormones are involved in the signal transduction pathway of thermoperiodic flowering control.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate oxidative DNA damage, and the levels of antioxidant enzymes (AOE) and selenium (Se) in relation to iodine deficiency and/or goiter in children. The study was performed in a group of goitrous high school children (15-18 years of age) ( n =14) with severe or moderate iodine deficiency. Thyroid hormones (TSH, FT 4 , TT 4 , FT 3 , TT 3 ), urinary iodine (UI) and plasma Se levels, and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were determined and compared with those of a control group consisting of non-goitrous high school children ( n =14) with normal UI levels or mild iodine deficiency. In the goitrous group, concentrations of FT 4 , TT 4 , plasma Se and UI, and activities of GSHPx and SOD were found to be significantly lower. Six typical hydroxyl radical-induced base lesions in genomic DNA of peripheral blood were identified and quantified by gas chromatography/isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (GC/IDMS), and higher levels of DNA base lesions were observed in the goitrous group. The results suggest that highly iodine-deficient goitrous children may be under oxidative stress, which may lead to greater level of oxidative damage to DNA. This study supports the evidence for the reported relationship between iodine deficiency and the increased incidence of thyroid malignancies.  相似文献

Cells ofPityrosporum ovale that colonize human pilosebaceous units are constantly exposed to cutaneous androgenic steroids. The aim of our study was to find out whetherP. ovale is susceptible to these hormones. Three strains ofP. ovale were grown in vitro in the presence of various concentrations oftestosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, androstanedione, 5--dihydrotestosterone andprogesterone (10, 100, and 1000 µg/ml; agar dilution assays). In addition, three strains ofCandida albicans were also exposed to equal concentrations of the same androgens. As a result, allP. ovale strains were suppressed by 1000 µg/mlandrostenedione, which was the strongest inhibitor. The other androgenic steroids also significantly reducedP. ovale growth at different concentrations, depending on the hormone used and the strain tested.Progesterone was inhibitory at the highest concentration for oneP. ovale strain only.Candida albicans was not affected by any of the androgens. These findings demonstrate an in vitro susceptibility ofP. ovale to high concentrations of human androgenic steroids. A relevance of this interaction for the in vivo fungus-host relation is not apparent.  相似文献
