Approximately 200 km from the mouth of the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada, adult sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka , were gastrically implanted with radio transmitters without anaesthetic. Subsets of the transmitter implanted fish were also biopsied which included drawing blood from the caudal peduncle (3 ml), removal of gill tissue (0·03 g) and quantification of energetic status using a microwave fat meter. Several experiments were used to test the hypothesis that the biopsy had a negligible effect on the subsequent survival and migratory behaviour of transmitter implanted fish. In the first experiment, no difference was found in the survival (both 100%) or tag retention (both 100%) between the two treatment groups (transmitter implanted with and without biopsy) when fish were held in pens for 24 h in the marine environment. Similarly, in other experiments where fish were released to the ocean to resume their migratory journey, no statistical differences were found in the travel times of fish in the two treatment groups, or in the proportion of fish that passed in‐river telemetry checkpoints. These results indicated that the handling and biopsy methods produced similar levels of mortality and tag retention as the telemetry treatment alone and that any changes in behaviour between the two treatment groups did not adversely affect migration time. Based upon the evidence provided from the biotelemetry of >300 adult sockeye salmon, it was felt that this general type of approach could be applicable to other fish species.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on testicular function in fish. In vitro incubations of goldfish testis tissue exposed to three selected PAHs [naphthalene, beta-naphthoflavone (betaNF), or retene] resulted in biphasic potentiation of gonadotropin (GtH)-stimulated testosterone (T) production, with no effect on basal levels. In vivo exposure of goldfish to betaNF also resulted in biphasic increases in plasma T levels. Experiments with rainbow trout revealed increased levels of in vitro T production when exposed to naphthalene, albeit only at higher concentrations than the responses observed in goldfish. Studies of possible sites of action at the level of the goldfish testis showed that betaNF exerted its most potent action when T production was initiated by a ligand such as GtH or prostaglandin E(2). Within the steroidogenic pathway, betaNF potentiation of GtH-stimulated T production may be partially mediated by increases in cAMP production, but appear to be independent of cytosolic calcium content. These studies demonstrate that PAHs may function as disruptors of reproductive endocrine function in teleosts through the unexpected effect of enhancing testicular steroidogenesis.  相似文献

The effects of metronidazole, CO, methanogens, and CO2 on the fermentation of glucose by the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix sp. strain L2 were investigated. Both metronidazole and CO caused a shift in the fermentation products from predominantly H2, acetate, and formate to lactate as the major product and caused a lower glucose consumption rate and cell protein yield. An increased lactate dehydrogenase activity and a decreased hydrogenase activity were observed in cells grown under both culture conditions. In metronidazole-grown cells, the amount of hydrogenase protein was decreased compared with the amount in cells grown in the absence of metronidazole. When Neocallimastix sp. strain L2 was cocultured with the methanogenic bacterium Methanobrevibacter smithii, the fermentation pattern changed in the opposite direction: H2 and acetate production increased at the expense of the electron sink products lactate, succinate, and ethanol. A concomitant decrease in the enzyme activities leading to these electron sink products was observed, as well as an increase in the glucose consumption rate and cell protein yield, compared with those of pure cultures of the fungus. Low levels of CO2 in the gas phase resulted in increased H2 and lactate formation and decreased production of formate, acetate, succinate, and ethanol, a decreased glucose consumption rate and cell protein yield, and a decrease in most of the hydrogenosomal enzyme activities. None of the tested culture conditions resulted in changed quantities of hydrogenosomal proteins. The results indicate that manipulation of the pattern of fermentation in Neocallimastix sp. strain L2 results in changes in enzyme activities but not in the proliferation or disappearance of hydrogenosomes.  相似文献

The effects of contaminated river water on the filtration rate of zebra mussels from a clean reference site were studied. After a 48-h exposure period to filtered water from the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Amstel (The Netherlands), the filtration rate was measured. It was demonstrated that water from contaminated locations inhibited the filtration rate. Inhibition was higher during low water levels in the rivers Rhine and Meuse than during high water levels, suggesting that contaminants are diluted during high water levels. It is concluded that the shortterm filtration assay with D. polymorpha can be used for assessing water quality.  相似文献

Chironomus riparius is one of the insect species which inhabit polluted rivers in large densities, indicating a high adaptive capacity. Previous studies showed that this capacity is expressed by the occurrence of adapted strains in metal polluted rivers. Differences in life history between metal-exposed and non-exposed midges have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments, and therefore a comparative field study of seasonal dynamics was carried out at two metal polluted sites and one reference site. Just downstream from a massive metal discharge, seasonal dynamics were almost identical to the upstream reference site. Circa four generations per year were produced. Further downstream, lower larval densities were recorded, especially during the second half of the sampling period. The influx of upstream C. riparius larvae into polluted sites was estimated by measuring larval drift just upstream from the point source of metal contamination and indicated a massive input to the standing stock downstream. It is concluded that drift of non-tolerant larvae is dominating the seasonal dynamics of midges downstream. Accordingly, genetic uniformity of chironomids inhabiting upstream and downstream sites is expected most of the time. However, research performed during the last decade, demonstrated that genetically adapted strains of C. riparius may develop at certain stages in the seasonal cycle. However, a stable metal-adapted C. riparius population at the first downstream site, is most likely present on rare occasions only.  相似文献

This study was conducted in order to evaluate seasonal migratory behaviour and reproductive pattern of lake sturgeon in a confined region of the Mattagami River system in northern Ontario where river flow is regulated by hydroelectric works. Radio tracking and the systematic sampling of lake sturgeon using gill nets indicated that the distribution of fish throughout the study site varied on a seasonal basis. This distribution was related to the migration of individuals to potential spawning sites in the spring, a post-spawning dispersal to feeding areas and late summer migration to an area of concentration on the Groundhog River which is a tributary of the Mattagami River. There was a high proportion of fish (about 50%), within the size range of reproductively active fish, found in the vicinity of suitable spawning habitat during early May. Measurement of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and plasma sex steroid hormone levels revealed a divergent pattern of reproductive development between the sexes. Female sturgeon exhibited a prolonged period of ovarian regression following spawning. Resumption of ovarian development was not evident until September and was characterized by an increased GSI and plasma levels of testosterone and 17β-estradiol. In contrast, male lake sturgeon began testicular recrudescence within one month of spawning with the GSI reaching prespawning levels by September; reproductive hormones were at prespawning levels by the end of June. It seems that hydroelectric works has complex effects on sturgeon in the Mattagami system. The extensive migratory behaviour of lake sturgeon within the study area make it prone to impingement or entrainment whereas the altered river flow appears to enhance reproductive development. Aims

Mid- and long-term safety and efficacy of the Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) have been studied in randomised trials; however, most were not individually powered for clinical endpoints. We performed a weighted meta-analysis comparing mid- and long-term outcomes in patients treated with the BVS compared with the Xience metallic stent.

Methods and results

Randomised trials comparing the BVS and Xience were identified by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE and conference abstracts. Seven trials were included (BVS n = 3258, Xience n = 2319) with follow-up between 1–3 years. The primary outcome of target lesion failure occurred more frequently in BVS compared with Xience [OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.11–1.62, p = 0.003]. Overall definite or probable device thrombosis occurred more frequently with the BVS [OR 2.86; 95% CI 1.88–4.36, p < 0.001] and this extended beyond 1 year of follow-up [OR 4.13; 95% CI 1.99–8.57, p < 0.001]. Clinically indicated or ischaemia driven target lesion revascularisation [OR 1.43; 95% CI 1.11–1.83, p = 0.005] and myocardial infarction (all MI) [OR 1.64; 95% CI 1.20–2.23, p = 0.002] were more frequently seen in the BVS compared with Xience. Rates of target vessel failure [OR 1.15; 95% CI 0.91–1.46, p = 0.25] and cardiac death [OR 0.91; 95% CI 0.57–1.46, p = 0.71] were not significantly different between BVS and Xience.

Conclusion

This meta-analysis shows a higher rate of target lesion failure and an almost threefold higher rate of device thrombosis in BVS compared with Xience, which extends beyond the first year. Device thrombosis did not lead to an overall increased (cardiac) mortality.

The metabolism of two azaarenes, viz. acridine and phenanthridine, by aquatic organisms was studied in short-term and chronic laboratory tests. The identity of metabolites observed in the test waters was investigated with different analytical methods, including HPLC, GC and hyphenated LC– or GC–MS. The Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), one green alga species (Selenastrum capricornutum) and periphyton or bacteria transformed acridine into 9[10H]-acridinone. Phenanthridine was transformed into 5[6H]-phenanthridinone by midge (Chironomus riparius) larvae. The findings indicate that closely related isomers may undergo species-specific biotransformation. It was concluded that keto-metabolites are major products in the aquatic fate of benzoquinolines, which may be overlooked in the risk assessment of parent compounds. This study illustrates the typical problems with, as well as the potency of, chromatographic methods in the elucidation of metabolic routes of organic contaminants.  相似文献
