In this study, we investigated the attraction of West Indian fruit fly, Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae), to volatiles of three mango [Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae)] cultivars in field cage tests. The number of flies captured with Multilure traps baited with Amate mature green mangoes was significantly higher than that captured in traps baited with Coche and Ataulfo fruits. There was no significant difference between the number of flies captured in traps baited with Coche or Ataulfo mangoes. Gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry analysis of mango fruit volatiles identified 24, 22, and 19 compounds for Amate, Ataulfo, and Coche mango cultivars, respectively. A principal component analysis of the volatiles revealed that the Amate mango was more distant from the Ataulfo mango, and the latter cultivar was closer to the Coche mango. The compounds myrcene, α‐pinene, β‐selinene, and trans‐β‐ocimene were the most abundant in Amate mangoes, whereas 3‐carene, β‐selinene, terpinolene, and α‐pinene were the predominant compounds of Ataulfo cultivars. In the Coche mango, the predominant compounds were 3‐carene, β‐selinene, terpinolene, and limonene. Traps baited with a blend of myrcene, α‐pinene, and trans‐β‐ocimene captured more A. obliqua females and males than control traps. Flies were more attracted to the Super Q volatile extracts of Amate mango than to the three‐component blend formulated in a ratio of 1:1:1. However, there was no significant difference between the number of flies caught by traps baited with Amate mango extracts and that caught by traps baited with the three‐blend component when this was formulated according to the relative proportions in the mango extracts. Traps baited with myrcene, the major component, caught fewer flies than traps baited with Amate mango extracts.  相似文献

The high mutation rate of RNA viruses has resulted in limitation of vaccine effectiveness and increased emergence of drug-resistant viruses. New effective antivirals are therefore needed to control of the highly mutative RNA viruses. The n-butanol fraction of the stem bark of Mangifera indica exhibited inhibitory activity against influenza neuraminidase (NA) and coxsackie virus 3C protease. Bioassay guided phytochemical study of M. indica stem bark afforded two new compounds including one benzophenone C-glycoside (4) and one xanthone dimer (7), together with eleven known compounds. The structures of these isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidences and correlated with known compounds. Anti-influenza and anti-coxsackie virus activities were evaluated by determining the inhibition of anti-influenza neuraminidase (NA) from pandemic A/RI/5+/1957 H2N2 influenza A virus and inhibition of coxsackie B3 virus 3C protease, respectively. The highest anti-influenza activity was observed for compounds 8 and 9 with IC50 values of 11.9 and 9.2 μM, respectively. Compounds 8 and 9 were even more potent against coxsackie B3 virus 3C protease, with IC50 values of 1.1 and 2.0 μM, respectively. Compounds 8 and 9 showed weak cytotoxic effect against human hepatocellular carcinoma and human epithelial carcinoma cell lines through MTT assay.  相似文献

Brazilian pepper trees (Schinus terebinthifolius) pose a significant threat to south Florida ecosystems. To identify the source population of this exotic species we developed eight trinucleotide (AAT) microsatellite loci. Polymorphism ranged from two to six alleles and heterozygosity from 30 to 100% in a sample of 10 individuals from across south Florida. Cross‐species amplification indicated that these loci may be useful in some members of the Anacardiaceae.  相似文献

The impact of gall-inducing aphids on shoot development was analyzed in 900 shoots from 20 pistachio trees, Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae): 600 in which the axillary—lateral buds were galled by Slavum wertheimae HRL during the previous growth season, and 300 ungalled shoots. Although P. atlantica is a compensating tree, and the aphids do not attack the apical buds, further development of shoots from the apical buds was stopped in 62% of the galled shoots, while only 8.7% of nongalled shoots stopped their growth. Further development was stopped more often on shoots carrying two or more galls than on shoots supporting only one gall. To assess the hypothesis that bud destruction by the aphids explains this pattern, a field experiment was conducted in 140 shoots, distributed across seven trees. One, two or three axillary buds from five shoots of each tree were removed for each treatment, and five other shoots were marked as controls. Only 14 shoots (10%) of the 140 did not develop. The growth of the other shoots was not very different among the treatments. The colonization of the apical shoots, which developed on previously treated shoots, by three other galling aphid species was monitored. Removing lateral buds considerably reduced the establishment of Geoica sp. galls (70% of them colonized control shoots), but weakly influenced Forda riccobonii (Stefani). It also contributed only 5% of the total variance of the distribution of Smynthurodes betae West. The different results of the survey and the experiment show that the impact of S. wertheimae galls on the future growth of shoots from apical buds is more complex than the simple physical destruction of the axillary buds. The phenology of vegetative and reproductive patterns, shoot growth, and the physiological and anatomical plasticity of leaves of ciruela mexicana (Spondias purpurea L) exposed to different ranges of light are described. Flower and fruit production occur during the dry season. Shoot elongation occurs during late spring and summer. Growth rates of S. purpurea are similar to the rates reported for fast growing plants, when growing on rocky slopes in shallow infertile soils. Leaves exposed to the highest photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) had a thicker mesophyll than leaves that developed under the shade. Midday depression of photosynthesis was observed forS. purpurea. The reduction in the rates of net CO2 uptake was related to high temperatures, high PPF, and increased leaf starch content. Plasticity in physiological and anatomical traits as observed in S. purpurea may be advantageous in the low-resource rocky environments where it grows.  相似文献

Cashew nut trees are consistently ant-visited throughout the year, with the ants attracted to a large number of extrafloral nectaries on the leaves, inflorescences, flowers, and developing nuts. The commercial production of cashew nut, for example, in India, Brazil, and east Africa, consistently applies pesticides, especially insecticides, in large monoculture plantings. Each year prophylactic spraying begins with the first flush of new leaves, continues through flowering, ending at about mid-nut development. We surveyed for ant diversity in sprayed and unsprayed cashew monocultures of various sizes and ages in Sri Lanka, India, and Malaysia to document the ant-cashew relationship and to explore the potential of ants replacing chemical pesticides in insect control. Using for-profit, commercial-size plantations as examples, we present information that cashew has a strong potential for arthropod-dependent protection from pests and suggest important habitat considerations for encouraging ants within cashew plantings.  相似文献

Tapirira chimalapana is a new species of tree common in the rain forests and lower montane forests of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the Mexican states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. It is most similar to the AndeanT. guianensis Aubl. subsp.subandina Barfod &; Holm-Niels. but differs from this and all other congeners by having larger petals on pistillate flowers than on staminate flowers and by pubescence features. Since its introduction in the late 19th century, the so-called cohesion theory has become widely accepted as explaining the mechanism of the ascent of sap. According to the cohesion theory, the minimum standing vertical xylem tension gradient should be 0·01 MPa m−1. When transpiration is occurring, frictional resistances are expected to make this gradient considerably steeper. The results of numerous pressure chamber measurements reported in the literature are generally regarded as corroborating the cohesion theory. Nevertheless, several reports of pressure chamber measurements in tall trees appear to be incompatible with predictions of the cohesion theory. Furthermore, the pressure chamber is an indirect method for inferring xylem pressure, which, until recently, has not been validated by comparison against a direct method. The xylem pressure probe provides a means of testing the validity of the pressure chamber and other indirect techniques for estimating xylem pressure. We discuss here the results of concurrent measurements made with the pressure chamber and the xylem pressure probe, particularly recent measurements made at the top of a tall tropical tree during the rainy season. These measurements indicate that the pressure chamber often substantially overestimates the tension previously existing in the xylem, especially in the partially dehydrated tissue of droughted plants. We also discuss other evidence obtained from classical and recent approaches for studying water transport. We conclude that the available evidence derived from a wide range of independent approaches warrants a critical reappraisal of tension-driven water transport as the exclusive mechanism of long-distance water transport in plants.  相似文献

Analytical data are presented for the polysaccharide and proteinaceous components of the gum exudates from Chloroxylon swietenia and Sclerocarya caffra, and for the amino acid compositions of the exudates from Azadirachta indica (two specimens) and Moringa oleifera. The gums from C. swietenia and S. caffra contain 4-O-methylglucuronic acid, glucuronic acid, galactose and arabinose; rhamnose is absent. Amino acid analysis shows that proteinaceous material is present in the gums from C. swietenia, S. caffra and M. oleifera despite their low nitrogen content. Hydroxyproline accounts for 28 % of the amino acid content of S. caffra gum. In contrast, A. indica gum has a high nitrogen content but contains very little hydroxyproline.  相似文献
