Problems and concerns in relation to the use of inorganic fertilisers, irrigation, herbicides and pesticides have led to the search for alternative strategies to combat limiting soil nutrient and water levels and the effect of weeds and pests on crops. Greater utilisation of microorganisms in agricultural systems could possibly allow reductions in the use of inorganic fertilisers, water, herbicides and pesticides with no impact on crop yield. Arsenic (As) contamination of irrigation water represents a major constraint to Bangladesh agriculture. While arbuscular mycorrhizal
(AM) fungi have their most significant effect on P uptake, they have also been shown to alleviate metal toxicity to the host
plant. This study examined the effects of As and inoculation with an AM fungus, Glomus mosseae, on lentil (Lens culinaris L. cv. Titore). Plants were grown with and without AM inoculum for 9 weeks in a sand and terra green mixture 50:50 v/v and
watered with five levels of As (0, 1, 2, 5, 10 mg As L−1 arsenate). Inoculum of Rhizobium leguminosarum b.v. Viceae strain 3841 was applied to all plants. Plants were fed with modified Hoagland solution (1/10 N of a full-strength solution
and without P). Plant height, leaf number, pod number, plant biomass and shoot and root P concentration/offtake increased
significantly due to mycorrhizal infection. Plant height, leaf/ pod number, plant biomass, root length, shoot P concentration/offtake,
root P offtake and mycorrhizal infection decreased significantly with increasing As concentration. However, mycorrhizal inoculation
reduced As concentration in roots and shoots. This study shows that growing lentil with compatible AM inoculum can minimise

The activity of H+-ATPases of plant and fungi generates an electrochemical gradient of H+ across the cell plasma membrane that drives a number of secondary transport systems, including those responsible for the
translocation of cations, anions, amino acids and sugars. During the last years, several studies have been aimed at elucidating
the role of plasma membrane H+-ATPases in the nutrient exchange processes taking place between the plant and the fungus in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis.
This paper reviews present knowledge about plasma membrane H+-ATPases and experimental evidence supporting the involvement of H+-ATPases of both organisms in the bidirectional transport of nutrients between partners. Molecular strategies that will provide
further information on the function and regulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPases in AM symbiosis are presented and discussed.

In several gynodioecious species, intermediate sex between female and hermaphrodite has been reported, but few studies have investigated fitness parameters of this intermediate phenotype. Here, we examined the interactions between plant sex and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal species affecting the reproductive output of Geranium sylvaticum, a sexually polymorphic plant species with frequent intermediate sexes between females and hermaphrodites, using a common garden experiment. Flowering phenology, AM colonisation levels and several plant vegetative and reproductive parameters, including seed and pollen production, were measured. Differences among sexes were detected in flowering, fruit set, pollen production and floral size. The two AM species used in the present work had different effects on plant fitness parameters. One AM species increased female fitness through increasing seed number and seed mass, while the other species reduced seed mass in all sexes investigated. AM fungi did not affect intermediate and hermaphrodite pollen content in anthers. The three sexes in G. sylvaticum did not differ in their reproductive output in terms of total seed production, but hermaphrodites had potentially larger fathering ability than intermediates due to higher anther number. The ultimate female function – seed production – did not differ among the sexes, but one of the AM fungi used potentially decreased host plant fitness. Orchidaceae are the largest family of flowering plants, with at least 24 000 species, and perhaps better than any other family of flowering plants, orchids represent the extreme specializations that are possible. As a result, they have long fascinated luminaries of the botanical world including Linnaeus and Darwin, but the size of the family has historically been an impediment to their study. Specifically, the lack of detailed information about relationships within the family made it difficult to formulate explicit evolutionary hypotheses for such a large group, but the advent of molecular systematics has revolutionized our understanding of the orchids. Their complex life histories make orchids particularly vulnerable to environmental change, and as result many are now threatened with extinction. In this Special Issue we present a series of 20 papers on orchid biology ranging from phylogenetics, floral evolutionary development, taxonomy, mycorrhizal associations, pollination biology, population genetics and conservation. 相似文献
