Sexual selection on multiple signals may lead to differential rates of signal introgression across hybrid zones if some signals contribute to reproductive isolation but others facilitate gene flow. Competition among males is one powerful form of sexual selection, but male behavioral responses to multiple traits have not been considered in a system where traits have introgressed differentially. Using playbacks, mounts, and a reciprocal experimental design, we tested the hypothesis that male responses to song and plumage in two subspecies of red‐backed fairy‐wren (Malurus melanocephalus) explain patterns of differential signal introgression (song has not introgressed, whereas plumage color has introgressed asymmetrically). We found that males of both subspecies discriminated symmetrically between subspecies’ songs at a long range, but at a close range, we found that aggression was equal for both subspecies’ plumage and songs. Taken together, our results suggest that male behavioral responses hinder the introgression of song, but allow for the observed asymmetrical introgression of plumage. Our results highlight how behavioral responses are a key component of signal evolution when recently divergent taxa come together, and how differential responses to multiple signals may lead to differential signal introgression and novel trait combinations. 相似文献

The handicap hypothesis proposes that male signals provide reliable information to females because only males of high condition provide high‐quality mating benefits and can afford the costs of producing attractive signals. In the context of direct benefits, the handicap hypothesis predicts that benefit quality and signal attractiveness will positively covary among genotypes, positively covary among environments, or be affected by congruent genotype–environment interactions. The latter should occur if the relative condition of a genotype is environment‐dependent. We tested these predictions in the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps. An interaction between male family and nutritional environment affected the expression of a costly signal preferred by females, while only male family affected direct benefit quality. These noncongruent effects of family and nutritional environment are inconsistent with the handicap hypothesis, and appear to have resulted from variation among nutritional environments in the relationship between signal attractiveness and benefit quality. Surprisingly, signal attractiveness was positively correlated with benefit quality when males experienced a low nutrition environment but negatively correlated with benefit quality when males experienced a high nutrition environment. As a result, female choice for direct benefits may be difficult, particularly in heterogeneous environments, unless females can assess the environmental histories of males. 相似文献

The genus Stichillus in Japan is revised. Three species are recognized: S. japonicus (Matsumura), S. spinosus Liu and Chou and S. cylindratus sp. nov. Stichillus brunneicornis Beyer is excluded from the Japanese fauna. These Japanese species are described and keyed. The male genitalia and the female terminalia are illustrated. We used video digitization and playback techniques to examine the potential predation risk of leg decorations and visual displays of male wolf spiders, which vary across the genus Schizocosa (Araneae: Lycosidae). Video images of courting males of four Schizocosa species were modified by adding or removing tufts and presented on LCD minitelevisions to the wolf spider Hogna helluo, a common predator of Schizocosa. Predatory responses of H. helluo varied significantly among stimuli and were highest for S. ocreata (which has decorative tufts and leg-waving displays) and lower for S. rovneri, S. duplex, and S. uetzi (which lack decorations and visual displays). Removal of tufts from S. ocreata significantly reduced predatory responses of H. helluo, but addition of tufts to other species had no effect. Results suggest that leg decorations may increase detection of active leg-waving displays and thereby increase predation risk. 相似文献

以南方型和北方型两个生态型黄瓜为材料,用改良的染色和制片方法,较为系统的研究了黄瓜花粉母细胞(PMC)减数分裂及其雄配子体的发育过程。结果表明:①黄瓜减数分裂属于同时型胞质分裂,双线期染色体具有明显的交叉节并呈现出较易识别的棒状或环状形态,在末期Ⅰ和末期Ⅱ有多核仁和核仁融合现象;②在四分体时期的小孢子成十字交叉形(decussate type),而非四边形(isobilateral type);③雄配子体发育过程中观察到两核居中期的特殊现象,在核居中期小孢子只有一层壁,而在核靠边期小孢子出现了两层壁;④黄瓜的成熟花粉粒属于两核花粉粒。 相似文献
