Expression of genes for plastid membrane proteins in barley under intermittent light conditions

Barley plants grown under intermittent light show a plastid membrane composition intermediate between those of etioplasts and chloroplasts. In particular protochlorophyll reductase disappears from the membranes whereas the 32000 protein, coded for by chloroplast DNA, becomes integrated into the membranes. Bacteriochlorophyll a cation radical in solution and in reaction centers of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. Resonance Raman scattering

Resonance Raman spectra of the π-cation of bacterio-chlorophyll a in solution at 30 K are reported and discussed. Outer C

C bonds of the pyrroles and the methine bridges are weakened by the ionization, while C

N and Mg-N bonds remain essentially unaffected. Resonance Raman spectra of reaction centers suggest that the positive charge on P-870⁺ should be localized on a single bacteriochlorophyll molecule by the lifetime of the scattering process (≈ 10^?13 s).     

Rubidium—A possible essential trace element

The rubidium content of whole blood was estimated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. In 46 healthy children it amounts to {ie193-1} g/g dry weight. There was no difference between the values found for infants, toddlers, and school children. In 29 dietetically treated patients with phenylketonuria and maple-syrup-urine disease the values were significantly lower than in healthy children. During the first three months of diet therapy the rubidium levels remained in the lower range of the normal values, decreasing to about 60% of the mean of normal values later on. With increasing length of diet therapy these values tended to decrease. It remains questionable whether these decreased levels reflect only an induced biochemical phenomenon without biological importance, or whether they are the first signs of a deficiency syndrome.     

Leukotriene A: stereochemistry and enzymatic conversion to leukotriene B

Leukotriene A was assigned the structure 5(S)-$\text{trans}$-5,6-oxido-7,9-$\text{trans}\text{-11,14-}\text{cis}$-eicosatetraenoic acid by the enzymatic conversion of a synthetic product of known stereochemistry into the naturally occurring isomer of 5(S),12(R)-dihydroxy-6,8,10,14-eicosatetraenoic acid in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.     

DNA sequence analysis of the defective interfering particles of bacteriophage f1.

Restriction mapping and nucleotide sequence analysis of several defective, interfering particles of bacteriophage f1 are described. These particles contain the nucleotide sequences corresponding to the carboxyl terminus of gene IV and the amino-terminus of gene II and the intergenic space between them. Tandem duplication of a portion of this intergenic space generates defective particles with novel nucleotide sequences not found in wild-type f1. This duplication is shown to contain the origin of complementary strand synthesis. Our results suggest that the duplication occurs at the site of gene II protein action, i.e. the origin of viral strand synthesis. A model is presented for the generation of these duplications in defective particles.     

Mitochondrial mutagenesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. III. Nitrous acid.

Nitrous acid (NA) induced mutations efficiently in mitDNA, conferring resistance to erythromycin and weakly induces mit- mutations. In some strains of yeast it also enhanced rho- mutations. The frequencies of nuclear and mitochondrial mutations induced with NA are compared.     

Steroid delta 4-5 beta-reductase in human mammary tumors.

Steroid delta 4-5 alpha- and delta 4-5 beta-reductase activity was determined in 16 human mammary tumors and 8 DMBA-induced rat mammary tumors using a spectrophotometric assay. Steroid delta 4-5 alpha-reductase was present in all tumors investigated while delta 4-5 beta-reductase was detected in only 6 estrogen receptor negative human breast tumors and absent in all estrogen receptor positive human breast tumors as well as in all rat mammary tumors. Further support for the presence of delta 4-5 beta-reductase was established by using a dual-labelling technique consisting of incubating tumor slices with [14C] testosterone and adding [3H] etiocholanolone, [3H] testosterone and [3H]-5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone at the end of the reaction. Following extraction and chromic acid oxidation, 4-androstenedione, 5 beta-androstanedione and 5 alpha-androstanedione were isolated and purified, and the constancy of the 14C/3H ratio was used as proof of 5 alpha-reductase and 5 beta-reductase. These results were shown to be consistent with the data obtained using the spectrophotometric assay.
