The spectral sensitivity of 21 eye preparations of Ascalaphus (Libelluloides) macaronius (Insecta, Neuroptera) has been re-measured using an up-to-date spectral scan method. 1. Dorso-frontal and ventro-lateral eyes have different spectral characteristics with peaks of sensitivity at 329 ± 8 nm (n = 15) and 343 ± 4 nm (n = 5) (P = 0.002), respectively. 2. The absorbance of the visual pigment layer, K, determined from the shape of the spectral sensitivity curves is 1.3 ± 1.8(n = 15) for dorso-frontal eyes and – 1.0 ± 0.3(n = 5) for ventrolateral eyes, thus implying higher selfscreening in the dorso-frontal eyes and narrowing of the spectral sensitivity curves as regards to a template visual pigment in ventro-lateral eyes. 3. Plotting K versus spectral sensitivity peak wavelength max revealed an inverse correlation between these variables with K = 42.5 – 0.126 max at r = 0.88(n = 19). 4. Extracts of ommochromes and carotenoids (Figs. 4 to 6) do not allow to account for the above diversity of optical properties of the Ascalaphus eye (Fig. 7).Abbreviations

The Lepidopteran transposable element piggyBac is being recognized as a useful vector for genetic engineering in a variety of insect species. This transposon can mediate
transformation in the Dipteran species Ceratitis capitata, and can potentially serve as a versatile vector for transformation of a wide variety of insect species. Using a plasmid-based
interplasmid transposition assay, we have demonstrated that this transposon, of the short inverted terminal repeat type, is
capable of transposition in embryos of three different insect species, Drosophila melanogaster, the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, and its host of origin, Trichoplusia ni. This assay can confirm the potential utility of piggyBac as a gene transfer tool in a given insect species, and provides an experimental model for assessing molecular mechanisms
of transposon movement.

A tabulation and discussion of trials utilizing the nematode, Neoaplectana carposapsae Weiser, against insect pests in the field are presented. Only those references not included in an earlier review article (Poinar, 1971) are considered here.Moisture limits the immediate usefulness of these nematodes and this factor should be taken into consideration for field trials. The neoaplectanid species, N. carpocapsae, seems best adapated for living on or just beneath the soil surface but can also parasitize deeper soil insects and even enter plant tissue to locate successfully potential hosts.In conclusion, it can be stated that neoaplectanid nematodes can play an important role in the control of insect pest populations and may be most successful in a program of integrated control. 相似文献

Summary The thick rigid chorion of the egg of Triatoma secreted by the follicle cells shows two porous layers: an aerial layer in the exochorion, an alveolar one in the endochorion. The anterior part of the eggshell is closed up by an operculum which is heaved up by the hatching larva. The operculum has no alveolar layer. The air enters through the numerous holes of the shell surface into the aerial layer and through the micropyles into the alveolar layer. The egg has no respiratory plastron.The follicle cells produce also a vitelline envelope whose structure shows a rapid condensation at fertilization time. During its development the embryo secretes two layers: serosal and embryonic cuticle.At high humidities, at low temperatures the egg is able to increase its weight during the early stages of embryogenesis, and this increase stops when the serosal cuticle is secreted. In a dry atmosphere the egg loses water but can develop if the temperature is higher than 20°C.The little permeability of the egg is related to the structure of its envelopes. The chorion and the vitelline envelope prevent the water from getting out of the egg. The serosal cuticle seems to be opposed to the penetration of the water into the egg. The role of the embryonic cuticle is probably limited in the transit of water.

Résumé Le tube digestif des cochenilles se caractérise par la présence d'un dispositif intestinal appelé chambre filtrante. Celle-ci, formée par l'accolement des deux extrêmités de l'intestin moyen, est supposée intervenir dans le transit alimentaire en éliminant par «voie raccourcie» l'eau ingérée en excès, mais ce rôle est resté jusque là hypothétique.Chez Planococcus citri, l'étude cytologique et histochimique révèle des caractères propres aux parties de l'intestin moyen participant à la réalisation de ce dispositif. Ces caractères suggèrent une fonction particulière qui peut être liée à un mouvement de l'eau. Les cellules sont de taille très réduite. Par endroits, des différences ultrastructurales s'observent entre les deux anses accolées (présence de vacuoles et d'espaces extracellulaires développés). Les cellules non modifiées de l'anse de départ présentent un caractère morphologique particulier, le système d'espaces intercellulaires et un caractère histochimique dominant, l'importante quantité de glycogène. Les cellules non modifiées de l'anse de retour présentent une structure inhabituelle, les «expansions tubulaires» associées aux microvillosités. En absence du «plasmalemma mitochondrial complex» le passage de l'eau se ferait par osmose dans deux directions: d'une part à travers les épithéliums amincis, d'autre part par le réseau d'espaces intercellulaires.
Studies on the filter-chamber of Planococcus citri risso (Insecta, Homoptera)Histochemistry and ultrastructure
Summary The digestive tract of the coccids is characterized by the presence of a filter chamber formed by the apposition of the two extremities of the midgut. It is supposed that the filter chamber plays a role in the elimination of excess water by a short circuit but this assumption is still hypothetical.In Planococcus citri, cytological and histochemical studies have revealed structural peculiarities in those parts of the midgut which participate in the organization of the filter chamber, which suggest a particular function. The cells are highly reduced in size. In certain regions ultrastructural differences exist between the two apposed extremities of the midgut such as the presence of a vacuole and of highly developed extra-cellular spaces. These features may be related to water transport. The conventional cells of the proximal end of the midgut show the presence of a system of intercellular spaces and are very rich in glycogen. The conventional cells of the distal end of the midgut possess extracellular microtubules associated with the microvilli. In absence of a plasmalemma mitochondrial complex the transport of water could occur by osmosis across the thinned epithelium and the network of intercellular spaces.

Root flies,Delia radicum (L.) andD. floralis (Fallén) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), trapped in swede crops in the south of Scotland, were infected withStrongwellsea castrans Batko and Weiser (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales). The pathogen was associated mainly with females of the 1st and 2nd generations ofD. radicum and of the single generation ofD. floralis. Disease incidence showed time-lagged density dependence. Greatest sustained infection levels were recorded in the coolest
wettest season. Higher proportions ofD. radicum were infected in the headland than in the crop. Unbaited yellow water traps caught greater proportions of infected flies
than traps baited with mustard oil (allyl isothiocyanate). The reasons for high levels of infection in Scotland are discussed.
Résumé Les mouches des racines,Delia radicum (L.) etD. floralis (Fallén) [Diptera: Anthomyiidae] attrapées dans la culture du rutabaga dans le sud de l'écosse, étaient contaminées parStrongwellsea castrans Batko & Weiser [Zygomycetes: entomophthorales]. Le pathogène était surtout associé aux fe nelles de la lère et de la 2ème générations deD. radicum et de la seule génération deD. floralis. Les cas de maladie montraient avec retard leur dépendance avec la densité des mouches. Les niveaux d'infection les plus grands étaient enregistrés pendant la saison la plus froide et la plus humide. Les bordures en friche des parcelles hébergeaient de plus grandes proportions deD. radicum infectés que les cultures. Des pièges jaunes sans appat ont attrapé de plus grandes proportions de mouches que lorsqu'ils étaient appatés avec de l'huile de moutarde (allyl-isothiocyanate). The incorporation of fragments of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the nuclear genome, known as numts (nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes), undermines general assumptions concerning the use of mtDNA in phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies. Accidental amplifications of these nuclear copies instead of the mitochondrial target can lead to crucial misinterpretations, thus the correct identification of numts and their differentiation from true mitochondrial sequences are important in preventing this kind of error. Our goal was to describe the existence of cytochrome b (cytb) numts in the leafcutter ant Acromyrmex striatus (Roger, 1863). PCR products were directly sequenced using a pair of universal primers designed to amplify the cytb gene of these insects. Other species of leafcutter ants were also sequenced. The sequences were analyzed and the numts were identified by the presence of double peaks, indels and premature stop codons. Only A. striatus clearly showed the presence of numts, while the other species displayed the expected amplification of the mtDNA cytb gene target using the same primer pair. We hope that our report will highlight the benefits and challenges of using mtDNA in the molecular phylogenetic reconstruction and phylogeographic studies of ants, while establishing the importance of numts reports for future studies. 相似文献

Developmental and tissue homeostasis is a delicate balance between cell proliferation and cell death. The activation of caspases,
a conserved family of cysteine proteases, is a main event in the initiation and execution of programmed cell death. While
caspases have been characterized from many organisms, comparatively little is known about insect caspases. In Drosophila melanogaster, seven caspases have been characterized; three initiators and four effectors. In mosquitoes, several putative caspases have
been identified in the genomes of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. A small number of caspases have been identified in the Lepidoptera, the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. The availability of new insect genome sequences will provide a unique opportunity to examine the caspase family across an

A list of non-native phytophagous insects and mites on woody plants (trees, shrubs, vines) in Canada was compiled using information
from literature and input from taxonomists. The 419 recorded species include Hemiptera (53% of species), Lepidoptera (22%),
Coleoptera (13%) and Hymenoptera (9%). Almost all species originate from the Palearctic, especially Europe, reflecting historical
trade patterns. About 41% of species were directly introduced to Canada from countries of origin, and the remainder spread
from the United States of America (USA) after initial establishment there. Major ports on the east and west coasts, on Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario are the main points of entry for exotic species directly introduced, and southern British Columbia (BC),
Ontario (ON) and Quebec (QC) are the major points of entry for species spreading from the USA. Consequently, BC, ON, QC and
Nova Scotia have the highest diversity of non-native species, and the prairie provinces and northern territories have the
lowest. The extent of the distribution of individual species is related to length of time in Canada, number of introductions
and dispersal abilities. Almost all native woody plant genera in Canada have been invaded by exotic phytophages. The large
majority of phytophages occur on angiosperms. Woody plant genera with the largest distribution, highest species diversity
and highest local abundances tend to host the greatest number of non-native species, including Picea, Pinus, Malus, Prunus, Salix, Betula, Quercus, Pyrus and Populus. The arrival rate of species in Canada increased from the late nineteenth century until about 1960, and declined rapidly
thereafter. Quarantine legislation enacted in the USA in 1912 and in Canada in 1976 seems to have reduced the rate of insect
invasion.
