The ca. 1.0 myr old fauna from Swartkrans Member 3 (South Africa) preserves abundant indication of carnivore activity in the form of tooth marks (including pits) on many bone surfaces. This direct paleontological evidence is used to test a recent suggestion that leopards, regardless of prey body size, may have been almost solely responsible for the accumulation of the majority of bones in multiple deposits (including Swartkrans Member 3) from various Sterkfontein Valley cave sites. Our results falsify that hypothesis and corroborate an earlier hypothesis that, while the carcasses of smaller animals may have been deposited in Swartkrans by leopards, other kinds of carnivores (and hominids) were mostly responsible for the deposition of large animal remains. These results demonstrate the importance of choosing appropriate classes of actualistic data for constructing taphonomic inferences of assemblage formation. In addition, they stress that an all-encompassing model of assemblage formation for the hominid-bearing deposits of the Sterkfontein Valley is inadequate and that each must be evaluated individually using not just analogical reasoning but also incorporating empirical data generated in the preserved fossil samples.  相似文献

The provision of suitable bedding for rearing broilers is an ongoing challenge for poultry producers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of using different types of crop residues as alternative bedding materials to wheat straw on growth performance, carcass traits, health, and welfare of broilers; moreover, the effects on the bedding and air quality were analyzed. We randomly assigned 180 1-day-old chickens (Cobb 500) across six bedding groups (three replicates of 10 birds each). Chickens in all groups were reared under similar housing conditions. Chickens of one group were reared on a wheat straw bedding (control), whereas those of the remaining five groups were reared on clover straw, cornstalk chips (CS), sugarcane top chips, chopped palm spines (CPS), and corn ear husks. Cornstalk chip and chopped palm spines were associated with the lowest (P < 0.05) ammonia concentrations compared with the remaining beddings. The mean values of bedding moisture percentage (P < 0.05), caking score, and ammonia concentrations (P < 0.05) were decreased with 6-week-old broilers reared on cornstalk chips. At 6 weeks, wheat straw, clover straw, sugarcane top chips and corn ear husks resulted in higher (P < 0.0001) BW and average daily gain compared with CS and CPS. Broilers reared on clover straw bedding showed the best FCR during 4–6 weeks of age (P < 0.01), and those kept on clover straw and sugarcane top chips exhibited the best (P < 0.01) feed conversion ratio (1.61 and 1.64, respectively) during 0–6 weeks of age. The carcass dressing yield, airborne dust concentration, bedding pH, and bacterial counts did not differ among the different bedding materials. The proportions of the drumsticks, gizzards, and abdominal fat of 6-week-old broilers were affected by bedding type (P < 0.05); but the differences among the bedding treatments were small. The mean incidence of footpad dermatitis and breast blisters was significantly less using clover straw. Broilers reared on chopped palm spine had the highest (P < 0.05) heterophil/lymphocyte ratio when compared with their counterparts. Conclusively, using clover straw or cornstalks as an alternative bedding material may be a beneficial strategy and should be highly recommended for rearing broilers.  相似文献

Meat colour is one of the most important meat quality traits affecting consumption desire. Genetic improvement for meat colour traits is not so easy because pigs can be phenotyped only after slaughter. Besides the parameters from the optical instrument, other indexes that reflect the material basis of meat colour should be measured accurately and used in the genomic analysis. Myoglobin (Mb) is the main chemical component determining meat colour. However, to what extent the Mb content contributes to meat colour, and whether it can be used as a trait for pig breeding to improve meat colour, and the correlations of Mb content with complex porcine traits are largely unknown. To address these questions, we measured the muscle Mb content in 624 pigs from the 7th generation of a specially designed eight breed-crossed pig heterogeneous population, evaluated its phenotypic and genetic correlations with longissimus thoracis colour score at 24 h after slaughter. More than that, we also systematically phenotyped more than 100 traits on these animals to evaluate the potential correlations between muscle Mb content and economically important traits. Our results showed that the average muscle Mb content in the 624 pigs was 1.00 mg/g, ranging from 0.51 to 2.17 mg/g. We found that higher Mb content usually correlated with favourable meat colour, higher marbling score, less moisture content, and less drip loss. Genetic correlation analysis between muscle Mb content and 101 traits measured in this study shows that Mb content is also significantly correlated with 31 traits, including marbling, shear force, firmness, and juiciness. To our knowledge, this is one of the largest studies about the correlations of muscle Mb content with as many as 100 various traits in a large-scale genetically diversified population. Our results showed that the Mb content could be a selection parameter for the genetic improvement of meat colour. The selection for higher Mb content will also benefit marbling, shear force, firmness, and overall liking but might not affect the growth, carcass, and fat deposition traits.  相似文献

Two experiments were completed to examine effects of inclusion of a yeast culture (YC) to a diet based on barley grain and wheat straw on digestibility, growth and meat traits of Awassi lambs and Shami goat kids. Experiment 1 studied effects of YC on apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and N balance in sheep, while experiment 2 studied effects on growth performance and carcass composition of lambs and kids. The same diet was used in both experiments and the YC was added to the diet of treated groups at the level of 12.6 kg YC/tonne of diet. Addition of YC had no effect on apparent digestibility of DM, CP and NDF, but it increased (P<0.05) digestibility of OM and ADF. No differences occurred in N intake, output or retention. Addition of YC did not affect growth rate, or DM intake, in both lambs and kids. YC supplementation to lambs reduced hot carcass weight, cold dressing proportion and total muscle/bone ratio, but increased empty digestive tract weight. There were no changes in back fat thickness, intermuscular fat of the leg muscle, and weights and proportions of carcass cuts. Measures of kids’ carcass characteristics and quality also did not differ. Only cuts of leg and shoulder differed (P<0.05) when calculated as a proportion of the whole carcass cut. Results show that YC supplementation increased digestibility with no effect on growth, feed intake or feed conversion ratio of fattening lambs and kids. However, YC supplementation reduced meat/bone ratio and tissue protein content, but increased fat content in carcasses of fattening Awassi lambs, but not in fattened Shami kids.  相似文献

Genetic evaluations separate phenotypes into their contributing additive genetic effects and non-(additive) genetic effects, with the former termed best linear unbiased predictions, and the latter termed best linear unbiased estimates (BLUEs). For the purpose of the present study, genetic evaluations, along with phenotypic data from 4 137 376 animals, were used to generate herd, year of slaughter and sex contemporary group BLUEs for various slaughter-related traits. These slaughter traits included carcass weight (CW), carcass conformation (CC) and carcass fat (CF). For the 4 665 herds that were consistently slaughtering ≥10 animals/year between the years 2014 and 2018, inclusive, all relevant contemporary group BLUEs were collapsed into a single herd-year value; results herein relate to these herds. The within-year herd-year BLUE correlations between CW and CC, between CW and CF, and between CC and CF were 0.51, 0.10 and −0.04, respectively. The repeatability across years of the herd-year BLUEs for CW, CC and CF was 0.66, 0.59 and 0.50, respectively. Furthermore, when the herds were stratified, within year, on the percentile rank of their herd-year BLUEs, herds had the greatest probability of remaining in the same BLUE stratum from one year to the next. In addition, results from the present study determined that various herd characteristics are associated with differences in the herd BLUEs. Results from the present study could be used to advise beef producers on the most promising strategy to improve the carcass merit of their animals.  相似文献

In an experiment with 40 growing Florina (Pelagonia) lambs, effects of replacing barley grain, sugar beet pulp, and alfalfa meal with fermented olive wastes (FOW) and soybean meal on productivity and meat composition was determined. In the 45-day experiment, lambs were allocated to one of the four treatments of 10 lambs (5 male and 5 female) each. Male and female lambs had an initial body weight (BW) of 19.7 ± 0.8 and 19.5 ± 0.8 kg, respectively, and were individually fed a concentrate mixture ad libitum and alfalfa hay (0.18 kg/lamb/day, dry matter (DM) basis). The FOW was added to the concentrate mixtures at inclusion levels (as fed basis) of 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/t for treatments FOW0, FOW50, FOW100, and FOW150, respectively. Male lambs grew faster (P<0.01) than female lambs, but no differences (P>0.05) occurred among FOW treatments in final BW, BW gain, DM intake, or feed conversion ratio. Males had heavier (P<0.01) fasted BW and cold carcass weight, and lower (P=0.04) carcass yield than females, but no differences in carcass components among treatments were detected. FOW can be incorporated into concentrates for growing lambs, at levels up to 150 kg/t, with no adverse effects on performance or carcass characteristics.  相似文献

The Gravettian in Apulia constitutes a singular cultural entity in the context of the prehistoric chrono-cultures of Upper Paleolithic in Italy. This situation can particularly be observed in the Gravettian sequence of the Paglicci cave on Mount Gargano, the lithic series of which show an original development. In the very heart of Apulia, until recently, no field for comparison could be found for the time sequence of the Paglicci cave. But the recent discovery of Gravettian occupation in the stratigraphic sequence of the SMA-external area of Santa Maria di Agnano makes it possible to revisit the status of the Paglicci cave, but also to clarify the specific characters of the Gravettian in Apulia. The lithic industry of SU 9-6 of SMA-Esterno is characterized by the presence of many burins on retouched truncation associated with straight backed points, Gravette or Vachons type. This association reminds us of the assemblage of Paglicci layer 21, attributed to Middle Gravettian. C14 datings for both sites match. Finally, at the base of the Gravettian SMA sequence, SU 11 provided large dihedral burins matching those found Paglicci layers 23-22 attributed to ancient Gravettian. The preliminary zooarchaeological study was carried out on a sample of 2007 remains of large mammals. In total, 816 taxinomic and anatomic remains (NRDt) could be identified, i.e. a 40.7% determination rate. The faunic spectrum consists of 10 taxons, among which 4 species of carnivores (leopard, wolf, fox, badger), 5 ungulates (horse, aurochs, ibex, deer and wild boar) and 1 leporid (hare). Ungulates prevail, as far as remains (98.7% of NRDt) or the minimum number of individuals (82.4% of NMI total) are concerned. Taphonomic analyses indicate that bones were not subject to deep post-depositional modifications. Consequences of weathering are visible on 17% of the cortical surfaces. Non-anthropic biological modifications are scarce: 13% of the material were impacted by roots and 0.7% show the results of carnivorous activity. The hare may be the only species, among herbivores, that was accumulated by a carnivore. The analysis of bone fractures and the traces left by the edge of a lithic tool reveal that the bone material was essentially accumulated and modified by human groups. Hunting is clearly aimed at both Horses (Equus caballus) and Aurochs (Bos primigenius), with occasional Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), Wild Boar (Sus s. scrofa) and Ibex (Capra ibex). The individuals represented are mainly sub-adults and mature adults. The human groups living on the site probably got their meat resources from the plain bordering the Adriatic shore and the vast, more or less flat, plateau overlooking the site. According to the skeleton representations in which the stylopod and zeugopod prevailed, after an initial treatment at the slaughter site, the Gravettians carried the most nutritious parts to the camp. The study of human activities indicates extensive processing of carcasses for their meat and extraction of marrow from long bones. Finally, specific research for fat from the cancellous tissue of the epiphyses of both long and short bones is proposed.  相似文献

Rapidly growing human populations and the increased need for high nutritive value meat in terms of low fat, high protein, and low sodium content are the driving reasons for the increase in rabbit meat production. However, dietary protein alternatives to sustain rabbit meat production, without competing with humans for strategic crops are needed. Therefore, the current study was conducted to investigate the effect of Azolla leaf meal (ALM) as a dietary protein source on growth performance, meat quality, and abundance and activation of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase β1 (p70S6K1), a downstream target of mammalian target of rapamycin signalling pathway and, thus, a key player in the regulation of protein synthesis and muscle mass. For this purpose, 60 weaned male V-Line rabbits were blocked for the initial BW and randomly allotted into four dietary treatments, with 15 replicate per treatment (n = 15/group) as follows: (1) CON group was fed on basal diet contains 0% of ALM, (2) AZ10 group fed on diet containing 10% ALM, (3) AZ20 group fed on diet containing 20% ALM, and (4) AZ30 group fed on diet containing 30% ALM. Rabbits were raised individually, and the experimental period was 42 days. At the end of the experiment, rabbits were euthanised and blood and skeletal muscle samples were collected. Body weight and BW gain were the highest in AZ10 group (P = 0.01), while feed intake was the highest in AZ30 (P = 0.01), feed conversion ratio was the lowest in AZ10 and highest in AZ30 (P = 0.01). Dressing % was the highest in AZ10 and lowest in AZ30 groups (P = 0.01). Muscle cross-sectional area was low in both AZ20 and AZ30 groups compared to CON (P = 0.01). The lysine concentration of Longissimus lumborum muscle increased (P = 0.03) while isoleucine tended to decrease in AZ10 vs CON (P = 0.09). The phosphorylation ratio of skeletal muscle p70S6K1 increased in AZ10 and AZ20 groups (P = 0.05). Therefore, ALM could be included in a growing rabbit diet, up to 10%, while higher doses negatively alter production performance, meat quality, and feed efficiency of growing rabbits.  相似文献

The traditional production of the Iberian breed pig involves a long production cycle. It might be shortened by using Iberian pigs crossed with Duroc and by reducing the growing phase, but the age-related changes on productive performance and carcass quality should be addressed. Thus, productive performance, live measurements and carcass and primal cut traits were evaluated on Iberian × Duroc 50:50 crossed pigs according to animal age at the beginning of the free-range finishing phase (Montanera): 10, 12 and 14 months old (IBxD10 (n = 15), IBxD12 (n = 17) and IBxD14 (n = 18) animal batches, respectively) and gender (immunologically castrated female -consisted of the Improvac® vaccination- and surgically castrated males). During the growing period, animals were fed with restrictions; 1.49, 1.29 and 1.20 ± 0.023 (mean ± SEM) kg/day of commercial feeds to start Montanera with similar BW; 103.9, 102.9 and 102.1 ± 0.22 kg, for IBxD10, IBxD12 and IBxD14, respectively. IBxD14 animals yielded the highest average daily gain (ADG) and BW after Montanera, as well as larger rump height and croup width. In contrast, these animals had the lowest carcass yield. Although animals from IBxD10 yielded hams of inferior size, this could be of interest to the sector, as there is a certain segment of the market that demands hams of smaller size and, generally, this is difficult to obtain with the traditional Montanera production system. The gender had no major effects on performance and carcass and primal cut traits, so both immunologically castrated female and surgically castrated males are suitable for finishing in Montanera.  相似文献

The improvement of efficiency traits, such as protein efficiency (PE), digestible energy efficiency (EnE) and lipid gain (LipG), are relevant given their associations with environmental pollution, cost of production, and the quality of meat. However, these traits are difficult to measure and usually require slaughtering of pigs. Efficiency traits are complex, and several factors, such as genetic predisposition, feed composition, but also individual feeding behaviour may contribute to efficiency. The objective of this study was therefore to evaluate the potential of using feeding behaviour traits to predict efficiency traits under dietary protein restriction. A total of 587 Swiss Large White pigs, consisting of 312 females and 275 castrated males, had ad libitum access to feed and water, and were fed a protein-reduced diet (80% of recommended digestible protein and essential amino acids) from 22.5 ± 1.6 to 106.6 ± 4.6 kg BW. Individual feed intake was monitored and carcass composition (lean and fat mass) at slaughter was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The PE and EnE were calculated as the ratio of protein or energy in the carcass (estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) to the total protein or energy consumed. Feeding behaviour traits monitored were daily feed intake, feed intake per meal, number of daily meals, duration per meal, feeding rate, and feeder occupation. A partial least square (PLS) regression was used to predict PE, EnE and LipG from feeding behaviour traits, while including farrowing series (for PE only), age at slaughter and BW at slaughter. Accuracy of PLS regression was assessed based on RMSE and R2 for calibration and validation sets, and on concordance correlation coefficient, which were estimated over 100 replicates of calibration and validation sets. Models with a number of latent variables of 5, 2 and 3 were identified as optimal for PE, EnE, and LipG, which explained 34.64%, 55.42% and 82.68% of the total variation in PE, EnE, and LipG, respectively. Significant concordance correlation coefficient was found between predicted and observed values for PE (0.50), EnE (0.70), and LipG (0.90). In conclusion, individual feeding behaviour traits can better predict EnE and LipG than for PE under dietary protein restriction when fed ad libitum.  相似文献
