The northwestern area of the Pannonian Lowland extends into Austria. The climatic and hydrologic attributes of this biographic region promote the existence of extremely astatic bodies water lacking any fish and hence the occurrence of Anostraca, Notostraca, Laevicaudata and Spinicaudata. Cyst hatching, under standardized conditions, of the Anostracan species Thamnocephalus platyurus and Streptocephalus dichotomus was significantly accelerated but not increased by applying the morphogen retinoic acid (RA). Cyst hatching was enhanced but not accelerated by artificially increasing the inflow of Ca2+ to the embryonic cells, using Calcium Ionophore A 23 187. Cyst hatching was accelerated and amplified, to a level in excess of the summed effects of each treatment, by a combined application of RA and ionophore. It was inhibited almost quantitatively by the Calcium-channel blockers Nifedipin and Verapamil. The significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

Anostracans were found living in ephemeral pools in the dark sections of three caves on the As Summan Plateau in Saudi Arabia. Branchipus schaefferi Fischer, 1834 occurred alone in one while it cohabited with Streptocephalus torvicornisbucheti Daday, 1910 in a second cave; fairy shrimps were observed but not collected from the third. None of the specimens demonstrated any of the types of morphological changes typically associated with cave adapted species. This is likely due to continuing colonization of the pools during flooding events. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Determining the composition of zooplankton in endorheic pans can be challenging, and live sampling of these microcrustaceans does not give a true indication of their species diversity and abundance. The incubation of zooplankton diapausing eggs can assist in determining their diversity and abundance. In this study the efficacy of two incubation methods – isolation and non-isolation – was tested using samples taken in 2013 from five endorheic pans in the Free State province, South Africa. The non-isolation incubation method made use of distilled water in the hatching experiments, whereas the Onbé–Marcus isolation incubation method, using 1:5 v/v ADAM medium/water, was adapted and applied to samples to isolate the diapausing eggs. The isolation method provided hatchlings at a higher rate than that of the non-isolation method, but subsequent removal and identification of the hatchlings was challenging. In particular, the success of the isolation method was putatively related to sediment grain size composition. Some difficulties were also noted in using the non-isolation method in the hatching and growing of anostracans.  相似文献

The surface topography and layering of the cyst wall of the fairy shrimps Streptocephalus dichotomus, S. torvicornis and Thamnocephalus platyurus are described, based on scanning electron micrographs. Cyst walls are not invariably bilayered, but may be composed of up to four layers. They are species-specific in all taxa so far studied. Cyst wall structure within single cysts may differ according to the topographical location on the cyst.  相似文献

Branchipus cortesi, n. sp. (Anostraca, Branchipodidae) is characterized by the broadly enlarged distal segments of male antenna 2, and a combination of morphological features concerning thoracic limbs, abdominal segments and egg morphology. The species occurs in temporary fresh water bodies in flatlands with temperate Mediterranean climate; it is distributed in the south-western part of Spain. Our study includes a morphological analysis using optical and scanning electronic microscopes. Questions about ecology and distribution of the new species are also discussed.  相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (BTI), when ingested by mosquito larvae, is highly toxic to them. Many other aquatic invertebrates feed on bacteria but, in general, BTI is not toxic to them. We tested in the laboratory the hypothesis that certain crustaceans indirectly benefit mosquito larvae by reducing mortality caused by BTI. We presumed the mechanism to be ingestion of the bacteria by the crustaceans resulting in a lower concentration available to the mosquito larvae.Mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae exposed to BTI was reduced in the presence of the fairy shrimp, Branchipus schaefferi and the ostracod, Cypridopsis vidua (only during summer trials and not autumn trials for the latter species) but was not reduced in the presence of the ostracod, Heterocypris incongruens. By contrast, H. incongruens preyed upon infected, though still-moving, larvae. Feeding on the bacteria by the crustaceans may not be an important mechanism; our data indicates that the crustaceans did not reduce BTI in the water. Moreover, B. schaefferi, introduced into water and then removed prior to the introduction of BTI and mosquitoes, also reduced mosquito mortality.The mechanism for the protective effect of B. schaefferi and C. vidua is unknown. However, these results suggest that the abundance of certain organisms co-occurring with mosquito larvae may partially explain why the effective concentration of BTI varies among habitats.  相似文献

Tanymastix stagnalis is known from seven locations in Ireland. These range from small to large temporary water bodies. It was earlier shown that the best hatching and survival of eggs and young stages occurred in the presence of soil and at temperatures between about 10° and 15°. Some eggs hatched after one drying period, others after up to at least 4 drying and wetting periods. It was found from field observations that the habitat appeared after a minimum of 200 mm of rain in a 2-month period. This occurred on average more than once per year, mostly between June and February. A computer model was constructed using field data, and meteorological data (rainfall and temperature) covering 100 years, to decide how secure the organism was in two contrasting habitats. This showed that in both habitats there was little likelihood of extinction from metorological causes. There was, however, the possibility of destruction of the smaller habitats either through drainage or conversion to permanent ponds through compaction of the soil by heavy farm animals. The distribution and the possibility of harvesting the organisms is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The genus Branchinecta Verrill, 1869 is represented in Yugoslavia by two species: Branchinecta ferox (Milne-Edwards, 1840) and Branchinecta orientalis G.O. Sars, 1901. The first species was collected in the steppe-like province of Banat, Pannonian Lowland, and in the lowland around the Skadar Lake, Montenegro, the second only in the province of Banat.On the basis of rich material of both species, a detailed study of the most essential morphological characters has been carried out and comparisons have been made with data in the literature. In B. ferox, significant morphological deviations are not found, whereas, in B. orientalis, essential features are clearly ascertained which were previously unknown or were not stated with sufficient precision. B. ferox is known to appear in small, temporary, natronsoda water rainpools, while B. orientalis has been found in a large temporary inundation pool with a high content of natronsoda and salt in the water.  相似文献
