This study identifies patterns of elephant Loxodonta africana africana impacts upon tree species and woody plant communities in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, a South African savannahs/woodlands area. Elephants were reintroduced there from 1981, following more than 80 years of absence. Data were collected in 2003 on elephant impact on woodland in the Park. Different vegetation types were susceptible to different types and levels of damage by elephants, suggesting that elephants will not homogenize the vegetation. Elephants targeted larger stems for all types of damage, with a strong preference for some of the less abundant species such as Albizia versicolor (breaking and toppling) and Cordia caffra and Schotia brachypetala (debarking). Elephant impacts tended to be distributed evenly across the park landscape, irrespective of stem density or proximity to permanent water. Overall, elephants have little impact on slowing or reversing the spread of undesirable woody species, but are having a marked impact on certain less common tree species and larger tree size-classes in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Success of invasive plant species is thought to be linked with their higher leaf carbon fixation strategy, enabling them to capture and utilize resources better than native species, and thus pre-empt and maintain space. However, these traits are not well-defined for invasive woody vines.

Methods

In a glass house setting, experiments were conducted to examine how leaf carbon gain strategies differ between non-indigenous invasive and native woody vines of south-eastern Australia, by investigating their biomass gain, leaf structural, nutrient and physiological traits under changing light and moisture regimes.

Key Results

Leaf construction cost (CC), calorific value and carbon : nitrogen (C : N) ratio were lower in the invasive group, while ash content, N, maximum photosynthesis, light-use efficiency, photosynthetic energy-use efficiency (PEUE) and specific leaf area (SLA) were higher in this group relative to the native group. Trait plasticity, relative growth rate (RGR), photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency and water-use efficiency did not differ significantly between the groups. However, across light resource, regression analyses indicated that at a common (same) leaf CC and PEUE, a higher biomass RGR resulted for the invasive group; also at a common SLA, a lower CC but higher N resulted for the invasive group. Overall, trait co-ordination (using pair-wise correlation analyses) was better in the invasive group. Ordination using 16 leaf traits indicated that the major axis of invasive-native dichotomy is primarily driven by SLA and CC (including its components and/or derivative of PEUE) and was significantly linked with RGR.

Conclusions

These results demonstrated that while not all measures of leaf resource traits may differ between the two groups, the higher level of trait correlation and higher revenue returned (RGR) per unit of major resource need (CC) and use (PEUE) in the invasive group is in line with their rapid spread where introduced.  相似文献

为了探讨在热带天然林景观中不同因素对木本植物(限于乔木和灌木)功能型分布的影响,在对海南岛霸王岭的热带天然林进行样方调查的基础上,运用数量分类方法对热带天然林的木本植物进行了功能型划分,并运用冗余度分析(Redundancy analysis, RDA)分别探讨了功能型出现与否、功能型物种丰富度和功能型木本植物多度3个矩阵与环境、空间和干扰因素之间的关系。运用偏冗余度分析对影响功能型分布变化的环境、干扰、空间及其交互作用等因素进行了定量分解。结果表明:利用木材密度和潜在最大高度两个指标划分出的9个功能型,能较好的区分功能型间对生境的适应响应差异;因子分解表明,纯环境、纯人为干扰和混合的环境-人为干扰是影响3个功能型矩阵分布变化的主要因素,纯空间和与空间位置相耦合的因素相对较低;在诸多因子中,干扰类型、地形因子、土壤类型、砂砾含量、土层厚度以及经纬度坐标是影响功能型分布变化的主导因子;RDA排序分析表明,一般来讲,硬木功能型多在生境条件好和远离人为干扰的立地高发生。软木功能型则更多地出现于生境条件恶劣和人为干扰频繁的立地。而中等硬度功能型则生态幅度较宽。但除了软木灌木功能型外,其它功能型物种丰富度和木本植物多度多在土层深厚和生境条件较好的立地较高。  相似文献

Temperature has long been understood as a fundamental condition that influences ecological patterns and processes. Heterogeneity in landscapes that is structured by ultimate (climate) and proximate (vegetation, topography, disturbance events, and land use) forces serve to shape thermal patterns across multiple spatio‐temporal scales. Thermal landscapes of grasslands are likely shifting as woody encroachment fragments these ecosystems and studies quantifying thermal fragmentation in grassland systems resulting from woody encroachment are lacking. We utilized the August 21st, 2017, solar eclipse to mimic a rapid sunrise/sunset event across a landscape characterized as a grassland to experimentally manipulate levels of solar radiation in the system. We then quantified changes in near‐surface temperatures resulting from changes in solar radiation levels during the eclipse. Temperatures were monitored across three grassland pastures in central Oklahoma that were characterized by different densities (low, medium, and high) of Juniperus virginiana to understand the impact of woody encroachment on diurnal temperature patterns and thermal heterogeneity in a grassland''s thermal landscape. The largest temperature range across sites that occurred during the eclipse was in the mixed grass vegetation. Similarly, the largest change in thermal heterogeneity occurred in the grassland with the lowest amount of woody encroachment. Thermal heterogeneity was lowest in the highly encroached grassland, which also experienced the lowest overall change in thermal heterogeneity during the eclipse. Time series models suggested that solar radiation was the most influential factor in predicting changes in thermal heterogeneity as opposed to ambient temperature alone. These results suggest that highly encroached grasslands may experience lower diurnal variability of temperatures at the cost of a decrease in the overall thermal heterogeneity of that landscape. It appears that fine‐scale spatio‐temporal thermal variation is largely driven by solar radiation, which can be influenced by vegetation heterogeneity inherent within a landscape.  相似文献

In vitro-grown shoot tips of the LN33 hybrid (Vitis L.) and cv. Superior (Vitis vinifera L.) were successfully cryopreserved by encapsulation-dehydration. Encapsulated shoot tips were precultured stepwise on half-strength MS medium supplemented with increasing sucrose concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 M for 4 days, with one day for each step. Following preculture, encapsulated shoot tips were dehydrated prior to direct immersion in liquid nitrogen for 1 h. After thawing, cryopreserved shoot tips were post-cultured on a post-culture medium for survival. An optimal survival of cryopreserved shoot tips was achieved when encapsulated shoot tips were dehydrated to 15.6 and 17.6% water content for the LN33 hybrid and cv. Superior, respectively. Comparison between the effects of dehydration with silica gel and by air drying on cryopreserved shoot tips, showed that survival was dependent on water content, not on dehydration method. The thawing method markedly affected survival of cryopreserved shoot tips, and thawing at 40 °C for 3 min was found best. No callus formation and fastest shoot elongation were obtained when cryopreserved shoot tips were post-cultured on the post-culture medium composed of half-strength MS supplemented with 1 mg l−1 BA and 0.1 mg l−1 NAA. With these optimized parameters, 60 and 40% survival of cryopreserved shoot tips were obtained for the LN33 hybrid and cv. Superior, respectively. Tropical forests are being cleared at an alarming rate although our understanding of their ecology is limited. It is therefore essential to design restoration experiments that both further our basic knowledge of tropical ecology and inform management strategies to facilitate recovery of these ecosystems. Here we synthesize the results of research on tropical montane forest recovery in abandoned pasture in Costa Rica to address the following questions: (1) What factors limit tropical forest recovery in abandoned pasture? and (2) How can we use this information to design strategies to facilitate ecosystem recovery? Our results indicate that a number of factors impede tropical forest recovery in abandoned pasture land. The most important barriers are lack of dispersal of forest seeds and seedling competition with pasture grasses. High seed predation, low seed germination, lack of nutrients, high light intensity, and rabbit herbivory also affect recovery. Successful strategies to facilitate recovery in abandoned pastures must simultaneously overcome numerous obstacles. Our research shows that establishment of woody species, either native tree seedlings or early‐successional shrubs, can be successful in facilitating recovery, by enhancing seed dispersal and shading out pasture grasses. On the contrary, bird perching structures alone are not an effective strategy, because they only serve to enhance seed dispersal but do not reduce grass cover. Remnant pasture trees can serve as foci of natural recovery and may enhance growth of planted seedlings. Our results highlight the importance of: (1) understanding the basic biology of an ecosystem to design effective restoration strategies; (2) comparing results across a range of sites to determine which restoration strategies are most generally useful; and (3) considering where best to allocate efforts in large‐scale restoration projects.  相似文献

To examine the linkage between forest cover type, litter inputs, and patterns of net N mineralization versus the turnover of N among soil microbes, we measured both the net and gross rates of N mineralization in replicated, adjacent old-growth eastern hemlock [Tsuga canadensis(L.) Carr.] or sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stands in upper Michigan. Mean aboveground net primary production and annual litterfall mass were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the maple forests (870 g·m-2·y-1 and 439 g·m-2·y-1, respectively) than in the hemlock forests (480 g·m-2·y-1 and 344 g·m-2·y-1, respectively). Forest floor and coarse woody debris mass, however, were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the maple forests (2.2 and 0.1 kg·m-2, respectively) than in the hemlock forests (2.9 and 0.2 kg·m-2, respectively). Litterfall N concentration was not significantly different (P > 0.10) between the two forest types. In situ gross rates of N mineralization were higher (P < 0.06) in the maple forests than in the hemlock forests (7.5 and 6.1 mg N·kg soil-1·d-1 respectively), but in situ net N mineralization varied independently of forest type and stand-level litterfall N concentration. Cover type–dependent differences in detritus production and detritus C quality appear to result in different N turnover rates, but the balance between gross mineralization and immobilization of N is very sensitive to within stand variability and varies at a scale smaller than cover type alone can predict. Residential development of lakeshores is expected to change a variety of key lake features that include increased nutrient loading, increased invasion rate of nonnative species, increased exploitation rates of fishes by anglers, and alteration of littoral habitats. All of these factors may alter the capacity of lakes to support productive native fish populations. Fourteen north temperate lakes were surveyed to examine how growth rates of two common fish species (bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus; largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides) varied along a residential development gradient. Size-specific growth rates for both species were negatively correlated with the degree of lakeshore residential development, although this trend was not statistically significant for largemouth bass. On average, annual growth rates for bluegill sunfish were 2.6 times lower in heavily developed lakes than in undeveloped lakes. This effect of lakeshore development on fish growth was not size specific for bluegills between 60 and 140 mm in total length. An index of population production rate that accounted for both the size-specific growth rate and the size distribution of fishes showed that bluegill populations were approximately 2.3 times less productive in highly developed lakes than in undeveloped lakes. Our results suggest that extensive residential development of lakeshores may reduce the fish production capacity of aquatic ecosystems. Received 29 April 1999; Accepted 26 October 1999.  相似文献

Leaf discs from the pot-cultured seedlings of tree species and understory shrub species in a natural subtropical forest were treated with methyl viologen (MV) solution under low light or high light illumination. The degradation of chlorophyll and the leakage rate of electrolytes through membrane were enhanced by the increasing MV concentration and prolonged time of treatment. Membrane injury was more serious than oxidative bleaching of chlorophyll under the same condition. When leaf discs were subjected to short term (1 h) exposure of MV-photooxidation in high light (1 300 μmol·m-2·s-1), a pronounced decrease of Fv/Fm, ФPSⅡ and qp, as well as △A505, △A320 and ratio of qp/qN were observed in all tested species, which were accompanied by the increase of qN, KD and Fo. It demonstrated that photooxidation led to PSⅡ inactivation expressing in the reduction of the number of PS Ⅱ centre undergoing a stable charge separation and efficiency of the primary photochemical efficiency and noncyclic electron transport of PS Ⅱ. Partial excitation energy might dissipate via the useful nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching, but the lowering of △A505 was not consistent with the elevation of qN. Understory shrub Psychotria rubra Poir., Ardisia quinquegona BI. Showed more susceptibility to photooxidation than the upper canopy tree species Schima superba Gardn. et Champ., Castanopsis fissa (Champ.) ex Benth. ) Rend. et Wils. and Syzygium rehderianum Merr. et Perry.  相似文献
