Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments. 相似文献

In the primate visual cortex, neurons signal differences in the appearance of objects with high precision. However, not all activated neurons contribute directly to perception. We defined the perceptual pool in extrastriate visual area V5/MT for a stereo-motion task, based on trial-by-trial co-variation between perceptual decisions and neuronal firing (choice probability (CP)). Macaque monkeys were trained to discriminate the direction of rotation of a cylinder, using the binocular depth between the moving dots that form its front and rear surfaces. We manipulated the activity of single neurons trial-to-trial by introducing task-irrelevant stimulus changes: dot motion in cylinders was aligned with neuronal preference on only half the trials, so that neurons were strongly activated with high firing rates on some trials and considerably less activated on others. We show that single neurons maintain high neurometric sensitivity for binocular depth in the face of substantial changes in firing rate. CP was correlated with neurometric sensitivity, not level of activation. In contrast, for individual neurons, the correlation between perceptual choice and neuronal activity may be fundamentally different when responding to different stimulus versions. Therefore, neuronal pools supporting sensory discrimination must be structured flexibly and independently for each stimulus configuration to be discriminated.This article is part of the themed issue ‘Vision in our three-dimensional world''. 相似文献

Understanding changes in biodiversity requires the implementation of monitoring programs encompassing different dimensions of biodiversity through varying sampling techniques. In this work, fish assemblages associated with the “outer” and “inner” sides of four marinas, two at the Canary Islands and two at southern Portugal, were investigated using three complementary sampling techniques: underwater visual censuses (UVCs), baited cameras (BCs), and fish traps (FTs). We firstly investigated the complementarity of these sampling methods to describe species composition. Then, we investigated differences in taxonomic (TD), phylogenetic (PD) and functional diversity (FD) between sides of the marinas according to each sampling method. Finally, we explored the applicability/reproducibility of each sampling technique to characterize fish assemblages according to these metrics of diversity. UVCs and BCs provided complementary information, in terms of the number and abundances of species, while FTs sampled a particular assemblage. Patterns of TD, PD, and FD between sides of the marinas varied depending on the sampling method. UVC was the most cost‐efficient technique, in terms of personnel hours, and it is recommended for local studies. However, for large‐scale studies, BCs are recommended, as it covers greater spatio‐temporal scales by a lower cost. Our study highlights the need to implement complementary sampling techniques to monitor ecological change, at various dimensions of biodiversity. The results presented here will be useful for optimizing future monitoring programs. 相似文献

Although tropical coral reefs are one of the most spectrally complex habitats, there is relatively little known about colour vision of reef fish. In this study, we measured the spectral sensitivity of an endemic Hawaiian coral reef fish, Thalassoma duperrey (family Labridae), and assessed the possible role of visual sensitivity in mediating intraspecific communication. Electrophysiological recordings of compound action potentials from retinal ganglion cells were used to generate spectral sensitivity curves for specific wavelengths (380–620nm). We found at least 2 sensitivity peaks for the on response (max=460, 550nm). The off response lacked a short wavelength mechanism but a medium wavelength mechanism (max=545nm) and a longwave mechanism (max=570nm) were found. To quantify the visual stimulus provided by a conspecific individual, spectral reflectance from the colour pattern of T. duperrey was measured with a spectroradiometer. Luminance and spectral contrast were computed between colour patches of the pattern and between the patches and natural backgrounds (i.e., water and coral). Reflectance from the blue head and contrast from the blue, green and red patches matched the sensitivity maxima of T. duperrey, although this depended on the type of background. Our results indicate that T. duperrey should be able to visually detect the colour pattern of a conspecific fish and that T. duperrey's visual system is designed to enhance target detection in the coral reef habitat with matched and offset cone mechanisms. 相似文献

Vision is one of the main sensory systems in amphibians, and the eye structure is highly associated with habitat conditions. The ontogeny, as well as the adult structure, of the eye has been studied in only a few species. The life change after metamorphosis is accompanied by changes in the visual environment. The aim of this work is to describe the eye ontogeny of Pleurodema bufoninum and to compare it with that of Pleurodema somuncurense . Specimens of both Pleurodema species were processed for histology analysis at different stages of development, including the tadpole, postmetamorphic, and adult forms. Eyes in both Pleurodema species are composed of the 3 tunics, tunica fibrosa , tunica vasculosa , and tunica interna , and the lens. Additionally, in both, the iris presents a projection on its dorsal and ventral free ends that screens the cornea. This structure has been reported in the eye of several anuran species and is called the umbraculum, meniscus or pupillary nodule. Our results show that the structures related to light capture (retina and lens) appear early in larval life, while the components of the terrestrial‐life eye (scleral cartilage, specialized cornea, eyelids, nictitating membrane, and Harderian's gland) do not develop until the metamorphic climax, when the tadpole leaves the water. Cervical cancer screening and management in the U.S. has adopted a risk-based approach. However, the majority of cervical cancer cases and deaths occur in resource-limited settings, where screening and management are not widely available. We describe a conceptual model that optimizes cervical cancer screening and management in resource-limited settings by utilizing a risk-based approach. The principles of risk-based screening and management in resource limited settings include (1) ensure that the screening method effectively separates low-risk from high-risk patients; (2) directing resources to populations at the highest cancer risk; (3) screen using HPV testing via self-sampling; (4) utilize HPV genotyping to improve risk stratification and better determine who will benefit from treatment, and (5) automated visual evaluation with artificial intelligence may further improve risk stratification. Risk-based screening and management in resource limited settings can optimize prevention by focusing triage and treatment resources on the highest risk patients while minimizing interventions in lower risk patients. 相似文献
