The aim of this study was to examine the habitat associations of a native cyprinid community of the recovering Rondegat River in the Cape Fold Ecoregion of South Africa as part of a long-term native fish abundance monitoring project. Relative abundance data were extracted from underwater video camera footage across the longitudinal gradient of the river in three sampling instances. Using multivariate methods the authors assessed community composition with respect to habitat, its overlap with a protected area and species-specific abiotic predictors of relative abundance. Distance from the uppermost site in the river was the most significant predictor of species abundance, indicating spatial segregation and varying overlap between species. The protected status of sites in the upper reaches, vegetated substrates and the size of individual sites were the most impactful on the relative abundance of the endangered fiery redfin Pseudobarbus phlegethon. The results of this study indicate that underwater video monitoring is an effective and low-cost approach that can inform conservation recommendations. Reducing agricultural runoff and sedimentation in the lower reaches may be useful further interventions to maintain key habitats of submerged vegetation.  相似文献

Environmental assessments of underwater noise on marine species must be based on species-specific hearing abilities. This study was to assess the potential impact of underwater noise from the East China Sea Bridge wind farm on the acoustic communication of the marbled rockfish. Here, the 1/3 octave frequency band of underwater noise was 125 Hz with the level range of 78–96 dB re 1 μPa, recorded at distances between 15-20m from the foundation at wind speed of 3–5 m/s. Auditory evoked potential (AEP) and passive acoustic techniques were used to determine the hearing abilities and sound production of the fish. The resultes showed the lowest auditory threshold of Sebastiscus marmoratus was 70 dB at 150 Hz matching the disturbance sound ranging 140–180 Hz, which indicating the acoustic communication used in this species. However, the frequency and level of turbine underwater noise overlapped the auditory sensitivity and vocalization of Sebastiscus marmoratus. The wind turbine noise could be detected by fish and may have a masking effect on their acoustic communication. This result can be applied for further to the assessent of fish species released into offshore wind farm marine ranch.  相似文献

  1. Applications in bioacoustics and its sister discipline ecoacoustics have increased exponentially over the last decade. However, despite knowledge about aquatic bioacoustics dating back to the times of Aristotle and a vast amount of background literature to draw upon, freshwater applications of ecoacoustics have been lagging to date.
  2. In this special issue, we present nine studies that deal with underwater acoustics, plus three acoustic studies on water-dependent birds and frogs. Topics include automatic detection of freshwater organisms by their calls, quantifying habitat change by analysing entire soundscapes, and detecting change in behaviour when organisms are exposed to noise.
  3. We identify six major challenges and review progress through this special issue. Challenges include characterisation of sounds, accessibility of archived sounds as well as improving automated analysis methods. Study design considerations include characterisation analysis challenges of spatial and temporal variation. The final key challenge is the so far largely understudied link between ecological condition and underwater sound.
  4. We hope that this special issue will raise awareness about underwater soundscapes as a survey tool. With a diverse array of field and analysis tools, this issue can act as a manual for future monitoring applications that will hopefully foster further advances in the field.

  1. Acoustic population monitoring is a noninvasive method that can be deployed continuously over long periods of time and at large spatial scales. One of the newly discovered threats acting on biological diversity is anthropogenic noise. High levels of anthropogenic noise occur in aquatic environments, yet their effects on animals living in freshwater habitats have very rarely been investigated.
  2. Here, we used acoustic monitoring and automatic detection to assess the acoustic activity of a population of a soniferous freshwater insect.
  3. The sounds emitted by the corixid Micronecta scholtzi were recorded in a Mediterranean pond with an array of 12 hydrophones. An automatic analysis based on a measure of the amplitude found in the frequency band of M. scholtzi was developed to assess the level of acoustic activity. We used functional linear models, accounting for the periodicity of the calling behaviour, to estimate the possible effect of temperature, vegetation and a noise due to an immersed engine.
  4. The automatic analysis was validated as an efficient method to measure the acoustic activity. The monitoring revealed a clear 24-hr pattern in the acoustic activity of M. scholtzi and three peaks of activity during the morning. Functional linear models revealed negative effects of both temperature and vegetation and showed that an engine noise, played back for 2 hr during the night, elicited an increase in the level of acoustic activity of the population. Moreover, a cross-correlation procedure showed that noise delayed the acoustic activity of the population.
  5. Our results suggest that acoustic survey and automatic detection are efficient methods to monitor the acoustic activity of an insect population especially in response to an anthropogenic disturbance.

Haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus, have been previously shown to produce sounds during mating. Several behavioural aspects of sound production of courting haddock were further investigated in relation to sex ratio. We assessed whether (i) single males or females generate sounds when isolated, (ii) sound is produced when one male is present with a female, (iii) sound production becomes altered with the introduction of an additional male, and (iv) sounds are produced independent of egg release. Data were collected from 30 March to 11 June 1999, during the spawning period using small outdoor tanks. Sounds generated by captive males during spawning were categorized as knocks, hums and an intermediate between these two types. Solitary males and females did not produce sounds. Sounds were produced when one male was present with a single female. The knocking call duration increased when a second male was introduced. Sounds produced by males occurred independent of the day of egg release.  相似文献

Robots play an important role in underwater monitoring and recovery operations, such as pollution detection, submarine sampling and data collection, video mapping, and object recovery in dangerous places. However, regular-sized robots may not be suitable for applications in some restricted underwater environments. Accordingly, in previous research we designed several novel types of bio-inspired microrobots using Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) ac- tuators. These microrobots possess some attributes of compact structure, multi-functionality, flexibility, and precise positioning. However, they lack the attributes of long endurance, stable high speed, and large load capacity necessary for real-world appli- cations. To overcome these disadvantages, we proposed a mother-son robot system, composed of several microrobots as sons and a newly designed amphibious spherical robot as the mother. Inspired by amphibious turtles, the mother robot was designed with a spherical body and four legs with two Degrees of Freedom (DOF). It is actuated by four vectored water-jet propellers and ten servomotors, and it is capable of walking on land and cruising underwater. We analysed the mother robot's walking and underwater cruising mechanisms, constructed a prototype, and carried out a series of experiments to evaluate its amphibious motions. We investigated potential ecological attributes of the striking coat colour polymorphism in the black bear ( Ursus americanus kermodei Hornaday) occurring on several small islands off the mid-coast of British Columbia, where a white morph (Kermode), fully recessive to the black morph, reaches 10–25% of the population. During three autumn field seasons (2000–2002; 697 h of observation time), we monitored salmon capture behaviour of individual bears (black, N  = 37; white, N  = 4). Both colour morphs foraged on salmon throughout daylight and darkness but with twice the rate during darkness. Log-linear analysis of capture efficiency (success/attempts) and average capture success per bout of the white morph was marginally lower than the black morph during darkness (22.8%, N  = 158 versus 25.8%, N  = 279 respectively; P  < 0.04), although it was significantly higher during daylight (34.1%, N  = 132 versus 25.3%, N  = 896, respectively, P  < 0.02), with similar trends in three different pursuit modes. Replicated ( N  = 10–14) field experiments involving a colour dimorphic simulated predator (i.e. human in a black or white cloak) showed that salmon were one-half as evasive during darkness than during daylight, with no differences ( P  > 0.4) in response to either the white or black models; however, during daylight, salmon were twice as evasive to the black compared to the white model ( P  < 0.001). The persistence of this coat colour polymorphism may be facilitated by increased salmon accessibility to the Kermode bear and diel foraging differences between morphs. On 27 October 2013, a Rhincodon typus was apparently chased by a group of Caranx ignobilis into nearshore waters near Green Island (Ludao), east of Taiwan. A fisherman brought it back to port where it was kept in a small sea pen until release. The R. typus was 78 cm total length, and was tagged and released on 29 October 2013.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Formation of the rosette-like egg mass of the neotropical mosquito Mansonia titillans Walker is described from video recordings of thirteen females ovipositing on the undersurfaces of water lettuce ( Pistia stratiotes ) leaves in the laboratory. The female abdomen executes symmetrical stroking behaviour to the right and left of centre line. Outstrokes consist solely of scratching, in which spines on the eighth tergite abrade the leaf surface preparatory to oviposition. A row of eggs is glued to the leaf only on instrokes, which are of longer duration than outstrokes, and may be interrupted by scratches and pauses. Scratching precedes oviposition of each of the first four eggs, which are laid without stroking behaviour. The egg mass is enveloped in an air bubble which is transported underwater on the hydrofuge female abdomen. The deposition of eggs on instrokes is homologous to the behaviour used by Culex and Culiseta mosquitoes in the construction of free-floating egg rafts.  相似文献
