Piezoelectric Pump Used in Bionic Underwater Propulsion Unit   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A new piezoelectric pump can pump liquid either forward or backward and adjust the flow rate. Thus an object can be driven forward or backward at different speeds. The driver of the pump, a circular piezoelectric plate, is modelled by Finite Element Method (FEM) in ANSYS and its performance is simulated and analyzed. The pump gives the best performance when the driving signals of the inlet and outlet valves have a bigger duty cycle and the plate has a higher voltage applied.  相似文献

Laboea strobila Lohmann, 1908 is a conspicuous oligotrich ciliate in the marine plankton. In order to compare different populations, the morphology of specimens from the Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, and Irish Sea was investigated using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the PCR-amplified products of the SSrRNA gene from a monoclonal culture of L. strobila from the Mediterranean Sea were sequenced and aligned with sequences of other oligotrichs, including a population of L. strobila from the Atlantic coast of the USA. Finally, the data from the ecological literature were summarized and the cultivation methods were described. The SSrRNA gene sequences of the two distantly located L. strobila populations from the North Atlantic are identical. Likewise, the morphometrics of most populations so far investigated after protargol impregnation (i.e. from the North Atlantic) do not show obvious differences. In all computed phylogenetic trees, L. strobila groups with Strombidium species, forming a monophyletic taxon corresponding to the subclass Oligotrichia. These results are corroborated by the ontogenetic comparison. Since no type species was fixed for Laboea Lohmann, 1908, L. strobila was designated in the present paper.  相似文献

Optimal foraging theory is devoted to understanding how organisms maximize net energy gain. However, both the theory and empirical studies lack critical components, such as effects of environmental variables across habitats. We addressed the hypothesis that energetic returns of juvenile bluegill are affected by environmental variables characteristic of the vegetated habitats. Predicted optimal diet breadths were calculated and compared to prey items eaten by juvenile bluegill to determine if bluegill were foraging to maximize energetic gain. Differences in habitat profitability among vegetated sites were determined by comparing predictions of maximized energetic return rates (cals-1) with prey contents of bluegill stomachs. Sizes of most prey items eaten by juvenile bluegill throughout the vegetated sites were smaller than the predicted optimal diet breadths. However, inclusion of smaller prey items in the diet did not seem to affect rate of energetic gain. Energetic return rates were maximized at the 1.5 and 2mm prey size classes and declined only slightly with inclusion of smaller prey sizes. Predicted energetic return rates and average mass in bluegill stomachs were related negatively. Average mass in bluegill stomachs also was associated negatively with Elodea canadensis stem densities and percent of light transfer, suggesting that foraging efficiency of bluegill decreased as plant density and percent of light increased. Results of our research indicate that maximization of energetic return rates is dependent upon availability of prey sizes that contribute to optimal foraging. Thus, determination of those habitats that provide the highest availability of benthic invertebrate prey with the least interference by stems is critical. Enhanced foraging capabilities can promote recruitment, faster growth, better body condition and survival.  相似文献

Abstract Sea cucumbers possess a peculiar specialized defense system: the so-called Cuvierian tubules. The system is mobilized when the animal is mechanically stimulated, resulting in the discharge of a few white filaments, the tubules. Their great adhesivity, combined with their high tensile strength, allows Cuvierian tubules to entangle and immobilize potential predators. The cellular origin and composition of the Cuvierian tubule adhesive were investigated in the species Holothuria forskali by studying prints left on the substratum after mechanical detachment of the tubule. Polyclonal antibodies raised against tubule print material were used to locate the origin of tubule print constituents in the tubules. Extensive immunoreactivity was detected in the secretory granules of mesothelial granular cells, suggesting that their secretions make up the bulk of the adhesive material. Tubule print material consists of 60% proteins and 40% carbohydrates, a composition that is unique among the adhesive secretions of marine invertebrates. Although it is highly insoluble, a small fraction of this material can be extracted using denaturing buffers. Electrophoretic analysis of the extracts revealed that it contains about 10 proteins with apparent molecular masses ranging from 17 to 220 kDa and with closely related amino acid compositions, rich in acidic and in small side-chain amino acids. The adhesive from the Cuvierian tubules of H. forskali shares these characteristics with many marine bioadhesives and structural biomaterials.  相似文献

The distribution of patterns of activity in different brain structures has been related to the encoding and processing of sensory information. Consequently, it is important to be able to image the distribution of these patterns to understand basic brain functions. The spatial resolution of voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) methods has recently been enhanced considerably by the use of video imaging techniques. The main factor that now hampers the resolution of VSD patterns is the inherent limitation of the optical systems. Unfortunately, the intrinsic characteristics of VSD images impose important limitations that restrict the use of general deconvolution techniques. To overcomes this problem, in this study an image restoration procedure has been implemented that takes into consideration the limiting characteristics of VSD signals. This technique is based on applying a set of imaging processing steps. First, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the images was improved to avoid an increase in the noise levels during the deconvolution procedures. For this purpose, a new filter technique was implemented that yielded better results than other methods currently used in optical imaging. Second, focal plane images were deconvolved using a modification of the well-known nearest-neighbor deconvolution algorithm. But to reduce the light exposure of the preparation and simplify image acquisition procedures, adjacent image planes were modeled according to the in-focus image planes and the empirical point spread function (PSF) profiles. Third, resulting focal plane responses were processed to reduce the contribution of optical responses that originate in distant image planes. This method was found to be satisfactory under simulated and real experimental conditions. By comparing the restored and unprocessed images, it was clearly demonstrated that this method can effectively remove the out-of-focus artifacts and produce focal plane images of better quality. Evaluations of the tissue optical properties allowed assessment of the maximum practical optical section thickness using this deconvolution technique in the optical system tested. Determination of the three-dimensional PSF permitted the correct application of deconvolution algorithms and the removal of the contaminating light arising from adjacent as well as distant optical planes. The implementation of this deconvolution approach in salamander olfactory bulb allowed the detailed study of the laminar distribution of voltage-sensitive changes across the bulb layer. It is concluded that (1) this deconvolution procedure is well suited to deconvolved low-contrast images and offers important advantages over other alternatives; (2) this method can be properly used only when the tissue optical properties are first determined; (3) high levels of light scattering in the tissue reduce the optical section capabilities of this technique as well as other deconvolution procedures; and (4) use of the highest numerical aperture in the objectives is advisable because this improves not only the light-collecting efficiency to detect poor-contrast images, but also the spatial frequency differences between adjacent image planes. Under this condition it is possible to overcome some of the limitations imposed by the light scattering/birefringence of the tissue.  相似文献

Field experiments were performed in Southern Finland on fine sand and organic soil in 1990 and 1991 to study carrot roots. Fall ploughed land was loosened by rotary harrowing to a depth of 20 cm or compacted under moist conditions to a depth of 25–30 cm by three passes of adjacent wheel tracks with a tractor weighing 3 Mg, in April were contiguously applied across the plot before seed bed preparation. Sprinkler irrigation (30 mm) was applied to fine sand when moisture in the 0–15 cm range of soil depth was 50% of plant-available water capacity. For root sampling, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cylinders (30 × 60 cm) were installed in the rows of experimental plots after sowing, and removed at harvest. Six carrot plants were grown in each of in these soil colums in situ in the field.Fine root length and width were quantified by image analysis. Root length density (RLD) per plant was 0.2–1.0 cm cm-3 in the 0–30 cm range. The fibrous root system of one carrot had total root lengths of 130–150 m in loose fine sand and 180–200 m in compacted fine sand. More roots were observed in irrigated than non-irrigated soils. In the 0–50 cm range of organic soil, 230–250 m of root length were removed from loosened organic soils and 240–300 m from compacted soils. Specific root surface area (surface area divided by dry root weight) of a carrot fibrous root system averaged 1500–2000 cm2 g-1. Root length to weight ratios of 250–350 m g-1 effectively compare with the ratios of other species.Fibrous root growth was stimulated by soil compaction or irrigation to a depth of 30 cm, in both the fine sand and organic soils, suggesting better soil water supply in compacted than in loosened soils. Soil compaction increased root diameters more in fine sand than it did in organic soil. Most of the root length in loosened soils (fine sand 90%, organic soil 80%) and compacted soils (fine sand 80%, organic soil 75%) was composed of roots with diameters of approximately 0.15 mm. With respect to dry weight, length, surface area and volume of the fibrous root system, all the measurements gave significant resposes to irrigation and soil compaction. Total root volumes in the 0–50 cm of soil were 4.3 cm3 and 9.8 cm3 in loosened fine sand and organic soils, respectively, and 6.7 cm3 and 13.4 cm3 in compacted sand and organic soils, respectively. This study was performed to determine if, as expected, the enlarged eye of the Baikal seal ( Phoca sibirica ) has an influence on the form and function of the skull and facial muscles. Macroscopic observation of these muscles demonstrated that the M. orbicularis oculi expands around the palpebral fissure and that some facial muscles attach and insert in the M. orbicularis oculi , possibly supporting M. orbicularis oculi function. We suggest that these muscles move the eye and palpebral area and constitute a morphological and synergistic facial muscle complex system. Further, the development of the M. rectus lateralis around the sclera of the eye indicates that this muscle is also involved in eye movement.  相似文献

  1. Elevated levels of anthropogenic noise, especially those observed through boating activity, can negatively impact fish species, but it remains unclear which species are most affected and which behavioural metrics are best used in assessing fish responses to underwater noise. The effects of boat sounds on freshwater species are of particular interest because freshwater environments are less studied than the marine realm despite comparably high levels of biodiversity.
  2. In the current study, we examine the behavioural responses to boat noise in two freshwater species that differ in their hypothesised response to sound inputs: the spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius), a species with known hearing specialisations, and the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), a species with more generalised hearing capabilities. Fish were presented with boat noise in a laboratory setting, and their swimming, escape and foraging behaviours were assessed to examine differential responses in relation to hypothesised hearing abilities.
  3. Both species showed a decrease in general swimming behaviours but an increase in erratic movements in response to boat noise, indicative of stress responses for both species. Despite the similarities in response based on swimming behaviours however, only spottail shiners exhibited true escape responses to the onset of the noise stimulus, suggesting a more extreme reaction in the species with a more refined hearing ability.
  4. Taken together, these results show that freshwater fish can respond to increased levels of anthropogenic noise, but that the severity of the response may differ based on auditory structures and therefore presumed hearing ability. The differences seen between behavioural metrics used (swimming vs. escape responses) also demonstrate how care must be taken in choosing a metric when developing exposure guidelines for underwater sound exposures, as different metrics could lead to differential impact assessments.

Although whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) have been documented to move thousands of kilometres, they are most frequently observed at a few predictable seasonal aggregation sites. The absence of sharks at the surface during visual surveys has led to the assumption that sharks disperse to places unknown during the long ‘off-seasons’ at most of these locations. Here we compare 2 years of R. typus visual sighting records from Mafia Island in Tanzania to concurrent acoustic telemetry of tagged individuals. Sightings revealed a clear seasonal pattern with a peak between October and February and no sharks observed at other times. By contrast, acoustic telemetry demonstrated year-round residency of R. typus. The sharks use a different habitat in the off-season, swimming deeper and further away from shore, presumably in response to prey distributions. This behavioural change reduces the sharks'' visibility, giving the false impression that they have left the area. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, year-round residency of unprovisioned, individual R. typus at an aggregation site, and highlight the importance of using multiple techniques to study the movement ecology of marine megafauna.  相似文献
