Summary

In contrast to the traditional view that Scottish Bracken (Pteridium Scop., Hypolepidaceae sensu Page, 1976) is a single, uniform taxon, evidence is presented that two species, each represented by multiple subspecies, are present in Scotland. These belong to two different species complexes within Pteridium, the P. aquilinum complex and the P. latiusculum complex. The P. aquilinum complex is represented by P. aquilinum (L.) Kuhn, with at least three subspecies: subsp. aquilinum, subsp. atlanticum C.N. Page and subsp. fulvum C.N. Page. The P. latiusculum complex is represented by P. pinetorum C.N. Page & R.R. Mill with at least two subspecies, subsp. pinetorum and subsp. osmundaceum (Christ) C.N. Page. Only P. aquilinum subsp. aquilinum is an aggressive weed which is a widespread problem to man; the others are rare. The paper establishes the nomenclatural priorities, typification, taxonomy, morphology, known distribution and ecology of all bracken taxa so far known from Scotland. The typification of P. aquilinum is discussed. There is no conflict between the two lectotypifications of Try on (1941) and Sheffield et al. (1989); both relate to the common bracken of the mid- and southern-latitudes of Europe, for which the existing epithet aquilinum must therefore be retained. It is pointed out that some of the other European taxa of bracken might well also yet be found within the British Isles, as well as, perhaps, other (especially possible diploid) taxa as yet undescribed.  相似文献

The evolution of carnassial teeth in mammals, especially in the Carnivora, has been subject of many morphometric and some dental topographic studies. Here, we use a combination of dental topographic analysis (Dirichlet normal energy) and 3D geometric morphometrics of less and high carnassialized lower teeth of carnivoran, dasyuromorph and hyaenodont taxa. Carnassial crown curvature, as indicated by Dirichlet normal energy, is high in lesser carnassialized teeth and low in higher carnassialized teeth, where it is influenced by the reduction of crown features such as cusps and crests. PC1 of the geometric morphometric analysis is linked to enlargement of the carnassial blade, reduction of the talonid crushing basin and an increasingly asymmetric cervix line with an enlarged mesial flexure in more carnassialized teeth. Distribution of PC1 values further indicates that along the tooth row of dasyuromorphs (m2–m4) and hyaenodonts (m1–m3) the most distal carnassial is the most carnassialized (principal carnassial), and in most taxa with overall higher carnassialized teeth, carnassialization successively increases from the anterior to the posterior tooth position along the tooth row. PC2 indicates that a longitudinal elongated carnassial is present in caniforms and in unspecialized feliforms, which separates these taxa in morphospace from all dasyuromorphs, hyaenodonts and specialized feliforms. An ancestral state reconstruction shows that this longitudinal elongation may be a plesiomorphic ancestral state for the Carnivora, which is different from the Dasyuromorphia and the Hyaenodonta. This elongation, enabling the presence of a longitudinally aligned carnassial blade as well as a complete talonid basin, might have provided the Carnivora with an advantage in terms of adaptive versatility.  相似文献

Abstract

The third codon positions are generally thought to be largely neutral, allowing for synonymous mutations. To see how much the third positions are loaded in general we analyzed the sequences of the nucleotides in the third positions. Simple word count analysis revealed excessive clustering of pyrimidines in the third position sequences of prokaryotic mRNA. The clusters have a clear tendency to follow one after another at characteristic distance of 25–30 triplets. Thus, the third codon positions do carry a rather strong message. Possible connection with loop-fold structure of proteins and (cotranslational) protein folding is discussed.  相似文献

Pollen data collected in 1989 and recorded from four stations in Switzerland (Basle, Davos, Nyon on Lake Geneva and Lucerne in central Switzerland) are presented and compared as flowering calendars. The data highlight the importance, for production of a pollen calendar over the whole country, of the fact that the beginning and duration of flowering occur at different times at the four stations.  相似文献

We present here a new algorithm for functional site analysis. It is based on four main assumptions: each variation of nucleotide composition makes a different contribution to the overall binding free energy of interaction between a functional site and another molecule; nonfunctioning site-like regions (pseudosites) are absent or rare in genomes; there may be errors in the sample of sites; and nucleotides of different site positions are considered to be mutually dependent. In this algorithm, the site set is divided into subsets, each described by a certain consensus. Donor splice sites of the human protein-coding genes were analyzed. Comparing the results with other methods of donor splice site prediction has demonstrated a more accurate prediction of consensus sequences AG/GU(A,G), G/GUnAG, /GU(A,G)AG, /GU(A,G)nGU, and G/GUA than is achieved by weight matrix and consensus (A,C)AG/GU(A,G)AGU with mismatches. The probability of the first type error, E1, for the obtained consensus set was about 0.05, and the probability of the second type error, E2, was 0.15. The analysis demonstrated that accuracy of the functional site prediction could be improved if one takes into account correlations between the site positions. The accuracy of prediction by using human consensus sequences was tested on sequences from different organisms. Some differences in consensus sequences for the plant Arabidopsis sp., the invertebrate Caenorhabditis sp., and the fungus Aspergillus sp. were revealed. For the yeast Saccharomyces sp. only one conservative consensus, /GUA(U,A,C)G(U,A,C), was revealed (E1 = 0.03, E2 = 0.03).
