Carbon: terrestrial C4 plants   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The carbon isotope composition of terrestrial C4 plants depends on the primary carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and on the diffusion of CO2 to the carboxylation sites, but is also influenced by the final carboxylation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). Several models have been used for reproducing this complex situation. In the present review, a particular model is applied as a means to interpret the effects of environmental and genetically determined factors on carbon isotope discrimination during C4 photosynthesis. As a new feature, the model considers four types of limitation of the overall CO2 assimilation rate. Both carboxylation reactions are assumed to be limited by either maximum enzyme activity or maximum substrate regeneration rate. The model is applied to experimental data on the effects of CO2, irradiance and water stress on short-term discrimination by leaves of several C4 species measured simultaneously with CO2 gas exchange characteristics. In particular, different patterns of the influence of low irradiances on carbon isotope discrimination are interpreted as due to variations in that irradiance at which a transition from limitation by PEP regeneration rate and RuBP carboxylase activity to limitation by the regeneration rates of both substrates occurs. After discussing literature data on the effects of environmental conditions on carbon isotope discrimination by C4 plants seasonal and developmental changes in carbon isotope composition, studies on the systematic and geographic distribution of C4 plants, evolutionary and genetical aspects, and some ecological implications are reviewed.  相似文献

Microautoradiography was used to follow the translocation pathways of 14C-labeled photosynthate from mature source leaves, through the stem, to immature sink leaves three nodes above. Translocation occurred in specific bundles of the midveins and petioles of both the source and sink leaves and in the interjacent internodes. When each of six major veins in the lamina of an exporting leaf was independently spot-fed 14CO2, label was exported through specific bundles in the petiole associated with that vein. When the whole lamina of a mature source leaf was fed 14CO2, export occurred through all bundles of the lamina, but acropetal export in the stem was confined to bundles serving certain immature sink leaves. Cross-transfer occurred within the stem via phloem bridges. Leaves approaching maturity translocated photosynthate bidirectionally in adjacent subsidiary bundles of the petiole. That is, petiolar bundles serving the lamina apex were exporting unlabeled photosynthate while those serving the lamina base were simultaneously importing labeled photosynthate. The petioles and midveins of maturing leaves were strong sinks for photosynthate, which was diverted from the export front to differentiating structural tissues. Summary Linkage studies with thirty translocations (one of the two chromosomes involved being number 4) in relation to msg24 (chromosome 4) and thirteen translocations (one of the two chromosomes involved being number 6) in relation to msg6 (chromosome 6) show without exception close linkage for all combinations tested. The results indicate that both genes are located genetically in or close to the centromere regions of their chromosomes.Cytological analysis of two BTT stocks (balanced tertiary trisomics) ascertained the respective chromosome arms (both msg24 and msg6 on the short arms) and revealed marked differences between genetic and physical centromere distances. The reason is obviously the high content of centromeric heterochromatin occupying both the chromosome arms involved.  相似文献

Summary The follicle cells which surround the oocytes of starfish are known to both release the hormone 1-methyladenine and to respond to it by an active movement which forms a component of the spawning response to the hormone. In Patiria miniata these flagellated cells are located peripheral to the oocyte and have long cytoplasmic processes which penetrate the vitelline layer to the egg surface to form an adhering zonule-like junction. Within the follicle cell cytoplasm are located elongate filamentous bands which appear to represent a component of the contractile mechanism that mediates follicle cell response to 1-methyladenine. These bands do not resemble the filaments of vertebrate smooth muscle cells (quantity, distribution and size of filaments; lack of dense bodies in the filament mass), nor the contractile units of the superficial epithelium of lower vertebrate follicles.This investigation was supported by grants HD-07194 and HD-12499 from the National Institutes of Health. Fifteen amines having a profound effect on carotenogenesis in Marsh seedless grapefruit are reported. The compounds fall into three series: Et2N(CH2)nMe (n = 4–8), Et2N(CH2)nPh (n = 1–5), and Et2NCH2CH2OC6H4R (R=H, p-Me, p-Et, p-iso-Pr, p-tert-Bu), There was up to an 11-fold increase in the total carotene content. Lycopene, not normally accumulated, became a major pigment. The inducing ability of the amines on carotenoid biosynthesis is correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient. The mode of action appears to be similar to that of 2-(4-chlorophenylthio)triethylamine hydrochloride.  相似文献

To explain the underlying causes of apparently stochastic disease, current research is focusing on systems biology approaches wherein individual genetic makeup and specific ‘gene–environment’ interactions are considered. This is an extraordinarily complex task because both the environmental exposure profiles and the specific genetic susceptibilities presumably have large variance components. In this article, the focus is on the initial steps along the path to disease outcome namely environmental uptake, biologically available dose, and preclinical effect. The general approach is to articulate a conceptual model and identify biomarker measurements that could populate the model with hard data. Between-subject variance components from different exposure studies are used to estimate the source and magnitude of the variability of biomarker measurements. The intent is to determine the relative effects of different biological media (breath or blood), environmental compounds and their metabolites, different concentration levels, and levels of environmental exposure control. Examples are drawn from three distinct exposure biomarker studies performed by the US Environmental Protection Agency that studied aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, trichloroethylene and methyl tertiary butyl ether. All results are based on empirical biomarker measurements of breath and blood from human subjects; biological specimens were collected under appropriate Institutional Review Board protocols with informed consent of the subjects. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop a framework for eventually assessing the total susceptibility ranges along the toxicological pathway from exposure to effect. The investigation showed that exposures are a greater contributor to biomarker variance than are internal biological parameters.  相似文献

BackgroundPatients with outflow tract ventricular tachycardia (OTVT) with normal echocardiogram are labeled as idiopathic VT (IVT). However, a subset of these patients is subsequently diagnosed with underlying cardiac sarcoidosis (CS). Objective:Whether electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities in sinus rhythm (SR) can differentiate underlying CS from IVT.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the SR-ECGs of 42 patients with OTVT/premature ventricular complexes (PVC) and normal echocardiography. All underwent advanced imaging with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)/18FDG PET-CT for screening of CS. Twenty-two patients had significant abnormalities in cardiac imaging and subsequently had biopsy-proven CS (Cases). Twenty patients had normal imaging and were categorized as IVT (Controls). SR-ECGs of all patients were analyzed by 2 independent, blinded observers.ResultsBaseline characteristics were comparable. Among the ECG features analyzed – fascicular (FB) or bundle branch block (BBB) was seen in 9/22 Cases vs. 1/20 controls (p = 0.01). Among patients without FB or BBB, fragmented QRS (fQRS) was present in 9/13 cases but in none of the controls (p < 0.001). Low voltage QRS was more often seen among cases as compared to controls (10/22 vs. 3/20 p = 0.03). A stepwise algorithm based on these 3 sets of ECG findings helped to diagnose CS among patients presenting with OTVT/PVC with sensitivity of 91%, specificity of 75%, a PPV of 80%, and a NPV of 88%.ConclusionsIn patients presenting with OTVT/PVC: FB/BBB, fQRS, and low QRS voltage on the baseline ECG were more often observed among patients with underlying CS as compared to true IVT. These findings may help to distinguish underlying CS among Cases presenting with OTVT/PVC.  相似文献

生态系统服务簇是多种生态系统服务的组合,是生态系统多功能性中的主导功能表征。识别生态系统服务簇的空间和功能变化及影响因素,可为基于主导功能实施分区管理策略、统筹土地多功能性,进而为整体提升区域生态系统服务提供参考。本研究以大清河流域为例,选取6种生态系统服务(水资源供给服务、粮食供给服务、水源涵养服务、水质净化服务、土壤保持服务、固碳服务),在乡镇尺度上探讨了生态系统服务簇的变化特征,研究了影响其变化的主要因素。结果表明:(1)依据主导的生态系统服务类型,大清流域可以分为3个生态系统服务簇,生态调节服务簇(B1),农产品供给服务簇(B2)和人居环境簇(B3);(2)2000-2015年,生态调节服务簇的空间格局变幅最大,乡镇变化率为19.6%,而农产品供给服务簇和人居环境簇的空间稳定性较强,变化率小于5.0%;生态系统服务簇类型发生转化的区域主要位于服务簇交界处;(3)尽管服务簇在空间上有变化,但生态调节服务簇、农产品供给服务簇和人居环境簇的生态系统服务呈增长趋势,平均增幅高达8.62%;(4)自然本底条件和生态保护政策是驱动生态调节服务簇变化的主要因素,农产品供给和建设用地面积的变化分别是驱动农产品供给服务簇和人居环境簇时空变化的主要因素。该案例研究结果为管理土地多功能属性、整体提升国土空间功能提供了有效的途径。  相似文献

In a recent study we investigated the complex mechanisms regulating the pollen release via thigmonastic stamen movement found exclusively in Loasaceae subfamily Loasoideae. We demonstrated that stamen movement is modulated by abiotic (light and temperature) as well as biotic stimuli (pollinator availability and visitation frequency). This is explained as a mechanism to adjust the rate of stamen movement and thus pollen dispensation to different environmental conditions in order to optimize pollen transfer. Stamen movement is rapid and thus a near-immediate response to pollinator visits. However, Loasaceae flowers also show a response to biotic stimuli on a longer time scale, by adjusting the duration of both the staminate and the carpellate phase of the anthesis. We here present two additional data sets on species not previously studied, underscoring the shortening of the staminate phase in the presence of pollinator visits vs. their absence and the shortening of the carpellate phase after pollination. Overall, the plant shows not only a rapid but an “intelligent” reaction to its environment in adjusting anthesis and pollen presentation to a range of factors. The physiological and morphological bases of the stamen movement are poorly understood. Our previous study showed that there is no direct spatial relationship between the place of stimulation in the flower and the stamen bundle activated. We here further show the morphological basis for stamen movement from a reflexed into an erect position: Only the basal part of the filament curves around the receptacle, while the upper part of the filament retains its shape. We hypothesize that the stimulus is transmitted over the entire receptacle and the place of reaction is determined by stamen maturity, not the location of the stimulus.  相似文献
