The Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes, is a vertebrate teleost model with a long history of genetic research. A number of unique features and established resources distinguish medaka from other vertebrate model systems. A large number of laboratory strains from different locations are available. Due to a high tolerance to inbreeding, many highly inbred strains have been established, thus providing a rich resource for genetic studies. Furthermore, closely related species native to different habitats in Southeast Asia permit comparative evolutionary studies. The transparency of embryos, larvae, and juveniles allows a detailed in vivo analysis of development. New tools to study diverse aspects of medaka biology are constantly being generated. Thus, medaka has become an important vertebrate model organism to study development, behavior, and physiology. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of established genetic and molecular-genetic tools that render medaka fish a full-fledged vertebrate system.  相似文献

This study is the first attempt to survey the diversity of fish digeneans in the Gulf of Gabes (southern coast of Tunisia). A total of 779 fishes belonging to 32 species were sampled. 53 species of Digenea belonging to 15 families were recorded. Among these species, 24 are reported for the first time from the coast of Tunisia. We report one new host record, Lecithochirium sp. from Sardinella aurita. The Hemiuridae is the dominant family. A host-parasite list is presented with the information on the prevalence, abundance and mean intensity of each species collected. The diversity of Digenea is compared with other localities in the Mediterranean Sea and the northern east of Tunisia. The Gulf of Gabes shows the lowest diversity linked to the anthropogenic activities and impact of exotic species. The use of Digenea as indicators of the state of the ecosystem is discussed.  相似文献

Three cDNAs, each encoding a different choriogenin (Chg), were isolated from a female masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) liver cDNA library. Two of the cDNA clones, Chg Halpha and Chg Hbeta, showed a close relationship and contained the typical domains of zona pellucida (ZP) B genes in fish, namely proline and glutamine rich repeats, a trefoil factor family domain, and a ZP domain. Specific antibodies against recombinant Chg H products (rmHalpha and rmHbeta) were generated to elucidate the relationship between the Chg H cDNAs and two types of serum Chg H protein, which were previously purified and characterized, and designated as very-high-molecular-weight vitelline envelope-related protein (vhVERP) and Chg H of masu salmon. The immunobiochemical analyses revealed that the Chg Halpha and Chg Hbeta clones encoded vhVERP and Chg H proteins, respectively. The third cDNA clone (Chg L) appeared to be a ZPC gene and, by mapping the N-terminal sequence of purified Chg L, was shown to encode serum Chg L protein. Various types of heteromultimer of the three Chgs were identified immunologically as high molecular weight chorion components, indicating the involvement of complex heterodimerization of multiple Chgs in the construction of chorion architecture in masu salmon.  相似文献

The oocyte vitelline envelope (VE) of gilthead seabream is composed of four known zona pellucida (ZP) proteins, ZPBa, ZPBb, ZPC, and ZPX. We have previously shown that the gilthead seabream ZP proteins are differentially transcribed in liver and ovary, with the expression in liver being under estrogenic control. However, although mRNA was found in both liver and ovary, only low ZPBa protein levels were detected in liver and plasma. Using isoform-specific ZP antibodies we show that ZPBa and ZPX translation products are present in the cytosol of stage I and II oocytes. In addition, the zpBa and zpX mRNAs were detected in early developing oocytes. During oocyte growth (vitellogenesis), the VE increased in thickness (>10 microm), and we show that the four ZP isoforms are present in different regions of the VE. ZPX was detected closest to the oocyte plasma membrane while the intermediate region was composed of ZPBa, ZPBb, and ZPC. At the outer layer, only ZPC was detected. When oocytes reach the fully grown stage they resume meiosis and hydration. As the oocyte expands, thinning to 4 microm, the VE acquire a striped and compact appearance at the electron microscopy level. This study provides further evidence for the oocyte origin of some ZP proteins in the gilthead seabream and suggests that the ZP proteins are differentially distributed within the VE.  相似文献

Understanding the genetic basis of phenotypic variation is a major challenge in biology. Here, we systematically evaluate 146 quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies on teleost fish over the last 15 years to investigate (i) temporal trends and (ii) factors affecting QTL detection and fine‐mapping. The number of fish QTL studies per year increased over the review period and identified a cumulative number of 3632 putative QTLs. Most studies used linkage‐based mapping approaches and were conducted on nonmodel species with limited genomic resources. A gradual and moderate increase in the size of the mapping population and a sharp increase in marker density from 2011 onwards were observed; however, the number of QTLs and variance explained by QTLs changed only minimally over the review period. Based on these findings, we discuss the causative factors and outline how larger sample sizes, phenomics, comparative genomics, epigenetics and software development could improve both the quantity and quality of QTLs in future genotype–phenotype studies. Given that the technical limitations on DNA sequencing have mostly been overcome in recent years, a renewed focus on these and other study design factors will likely lead to significant improvements in QTL studies in the future.  相似文献

The distribution and morphology of nitroxidergic elements in the esophagus, stomach, and intestine of the shishamo smelt Hypomesus japonicus (Teleostei: Salmoniformes) were studied. Nitroxidergic cells and fibers were found in all examined parts of the digestive tract, occurring most frequently in the stomach and rectal portion of the intestine. The spatial density of the nerve cells and fibers was maximum in the myenteric plexus and circular muscle layer and decreased in the longitudinal muscle layer and in the submucous plexus.  相似文献

This paper presents original data on the neuronal composition of various regions of the pallium of the telencephalon in Oncorhynchus keta. This study was carried out using routine neurohistologic techniques. Four basic areas were distinguished within the pallium: medial, dorsal, central, and lateral. The central pallium exhibited the most complicated cytoarchitectonics. In the central and lateral areas, pyramidal-like neurons with a well-developed dendritic spine apparatus were found. These were allodendritic cells, which appeared to be comparable to the pyramidal neurons of higher vertebrates in a number of features. Horizontal neurons and isodendritic radial neurons were also encountered. These cell types occurred in the ventral part of the central area and in the lateral area.  相似文献

This study investigated the ecomorphology of pharyngeal jaw structure and durophagy in three families of marine teleosts: the Sciaenidae, Haemulidae and Carangidae. Regressions of the bone and muscle mass of pharyngeal jaws were generated to elucidate the differences associated with eating hard-bodied and soft-bodied prey; within-family comparisons revealed significant differences in masses of bones and muscles involved with processing the former. Generally, the durophagous species − Trachinotus carolinus (Carangidae), Pogonias cromis (Sciaenidae) and Anisotremus surinamensis (Haemulidae) − had heavier and stronger pharyngeal toothplates and larger protractor pectoralis muscles, with masses of these musculoskeletal elements ranging from five times to nearly an order of magnitude larger than those of their soft-prey feeding relatives. Pogonias cromis and T. carolinus demonstrate convergence in the ontogeny and morphological modification of the pharyngeal toothplates and protractor pectoralis muscles that enhance crushing ability. In the Haemulidae, moderate size increases in a few pharyngeal jaw elements (and larger overall body size in A. surinamensis ) are sufficient for durophagy. Tonofilaments in epithelial cells of teleost skin can be aligned as bundles or skeins of appreciable bilk, or form a pattern of smaller bundles oriented in various directions, or there may be a condition where individual tonofilaments interlace. If sufficiently close together, interwoven tonofilaments can form a basket-like structure, a “capsule”, proximally in the cell. This arrangement, previously known in epithelial cells of Myxinoids, occurs in localised sites in various teleosts of diverse taxonomic position, for instance in clupeids and gadids. A less intimate interlacing of cortical tonofilaments can accompany a modification of the perinuclear cytoplasm previously described, by light microscopy, as “vesiculated”, as in the middle layers of the epidermis in Periophthalmus. In head epidermis of Sprattus, the outer layers of cells contain proximal capsules, but the middle layers consist of flattened cells with a restricted perinuclear cytoplasm, peripheral tonofilaments, and a second population of filaments of a larger calibre. One implication of these results is that the cytoskeleton can undergo profound modification as cells progress from the basal to the superficial layers of the epidermis.  相似文献

The aims of the study were to test whether nocturnal white light can normalize menstrual cycles in oligomenorrheic women, and whether the phase of the menstrual cycle in which light is given is important for the shortening effect. Twenty-five women with long menstrual cycles (35.9–53.4 days on average) were treated for 1–3 cycles, each of which was preceded and followed by at least two untreated cycles. Treatments were 100 watt bedside lights administered for 5 consecutive nights. They centered at three different phases of the menstrual cycle: 6–7th, 14–17th or 23–25th days of the treated cycle (early, middle or late treatment, respectively). On average, the treatment cycle lengths were modestly, but significantly reduced compared to the duration of baseline cycles (more than 11 %). The difference in the effects of the early, middle and late treatment was not significant. However, if middle or late treatments were administered in the latter half of the interval between the menstrual cycle onset and probable time of ovulation, reductions of the treated cycle length were substantial (more than 20 %, resulting in cycles less than 33 days on average; p < 0.001). Other treatments produced only weak (up to 7 %), if any, cycle reductions. Moreover, we found a strong correlation (p < 0.001) between the duration of baseline cycle and differential effect of middle treatment (compared to early or late treatment). Middle treatments reduced treated cycle duration to the normal range in the subjects with shorter mean baseline cycles (<42 days), while in the subjects with longer duration of baseline cycle the shortening effect was produced by late treatments (p = 0.005 and p = 0.001, respectively). The results support the suggestion that a bedside lamp used on nights prior to ovulation can cause reduction of long menstrual cycles.  相似文献
