Summary Rates of insect capture increased with leaf area in the insectivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia, and growth of new leaves was related to insect capture. However, increased leaf growth was counterbalanced by leaf abscission which was in turn related to insect capture and leaf growth. Leaf loss equaled leaf growth in plants having natural rate of insect capture. A large proportion of the nitrogen gain from prey was stored in the hypocotyl; it was estimated from feeding experiments that about 24% to 30% of the nitrogen stored in the hypocotyl after winter originated from insect capture in the previous season. The effect of insect capture is discussed in relation to the life cycle of Drosera.  相似文献

The governing factors for soil nitrogen dynamics were identified with a simulation model. In addition, the model was used to interpret measurements from a plot fertilisation experiment in southwest Sweden.Simulated moisture and temperature conditions were the driving variables for the simulation of soil nitrogen dynamics and leaching during a 6-year period. The results of the simulation were compared with monthly observations on two plots with grain crops, one with liquid manure and commercial fertilisers applied and one with commercial fertilisers only.Simulated temporal variations of the nitrate and ammonium storages generally agreed with observations. The dominant role of the crops as a determinant of soil nitrogen conditions was demonstrated. A higher leaching loss from the plot with application of commerical fertilisers only occurred both in simulations and measurements compared to the plot with application of both commercial fertilisers and manure. The main reason was the higher N-application in the former treatment.The effect of water flows in macropores was interpreted as a delay of simulated leaching compared to observed leaching on some occasions in summer and early autumn. No direct effect of the macropores on the yearly rates of leaching could be seen.  相似文献

Water-storage capacity was measured inThuja occidentalis L.,Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr., andAcer saccharum Marsh. during the dehydration of stem segments 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter. Stem water potential was measured with a temperature-corrected stem hygrometer and cavitations were detected acoustically. Water loss was measured by weight change. Dehydration isotherms consistently displayed three phases. The first phase, from water potential (Ψ) 0 to about −0.2 MPa, had a high capacitance (C>0.4kg water lost· (1 of tissue)−1· MPa−1) and we have attributed this high C to capillary water as defined by Zimmermann (1983, Xylem structure and the ascent of sap, Springer-Verlag). The second phase from Ψ=−0.5 to about −2.0 had the lowest C values (<0.02 kg·l−1·MPa−1) and was accompanied by a few cavitation events. This phase may have been a transition zone between capillary storage and water released by cavitation events as well as water drawn from living cells of the bark. The third phase also had a high C (about 0.07–0.22kg·l−1·MPa−1) and was associated with many cavitation events while Ψ declined below about −2.5 MPa; we presume the high capacitance was the consequence of water released by cavitation events. We discuss the ecological adaptive advantage of these three phases of water-storage in trees. In moist environments, water withdrawn from capillary storage may be an important fraction of transpiration, but may be of little adaptive advantage. For most of the growth season trees draw mainly on elastic storage, but stem elastic storage is less than leaf elastic storage and therefore unlikely to be important. In very dry environments, water relased by cavitation events might be important to the short-term survival of trees.  相似文献

Cortical microtubules (MTs) in protoplasts prepared from tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) BY-2 cells were found to be sensitive to cold. However, as the protoplasts regenerated cell walls they became resistant to cold, indicating that the cell wall stabilizes cortical MTs against the effects of cold. Since poly-l-lysine was found to stabilize MTs in protoplasts, we examined extensin, an important polycationic component of the cell wall, and found it also to be effective in stabilizing the MTs of protoplasts. Both extensin isolated from culture filtrates of tobacco BY-2 cells and extensin isolated in a similar way from cultures of tobacco XD-6S cells rendered the cortical MTs in protoplasts resistant to cold. Extensin at 0.1 mg·ml−1 was as effective as the cell wall in this respect. It is probable that extensin in the cell wall plays an important role in stabilizing cortical MTs in tobacco BY-2 cells.  相似文献

The photosynthetic energy storage yield of uncoupled thylakoid membranes was monitored by photoacoustic spectroscopy at various measuring beam intensities. The energy storage rate as evaluated by the half-saturation measuring beam intensity (i50) was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1 dimethylurea, by heat inactivation or by artificial electron acceptors specific for photosystem I or photosystem II; and was activated by electron donors to photosystem I. The reactions involving both photosystems were all characterized by a similar maximal energy storage yield of 16±2 percent. Four natural populations of Clarkia tembloriensis, whose levels of heterozygosity and rates of outcrossing were previously found to be correlated, are examined for developmental instability in their leaves. From the northern end of the species range, we compare a predominantly selfing population (t? = 0.26) with a more outcrossed population (t? = 0.84), which is genetically similar. From the southern end of the range, we compare a highly selfing population (t? = 0.03) with a more outcrossed population (t? = 0.58). We measured developmental stability in the populations using two measures of within-plant variation in leaf length as well as calculations of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) for several leaf traits. Growth-chamber experiments show that selfing populations are significantly more variable in leaf length than more outcrossed populations. Developmental instability can contribute to this difference in population-level variance. Plants from more homozygous populations tend to have greater within-plant variance over developmentally comparable nodes than plants from more heterozygous populations, but the difference is not significant. At the upper nodes of the plant, mature leaf length declines steadily with plant age, allowing for a regression of leaf length on node. On average, the plants from more homozygous populations showed higher variance about the regression (MSE) and lower R2 values, suggesting that the decline in leaf length with plant age is less stable in plants from selfing populations than in plants from outcrossing populations. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was calculated for four traits within single leaves at up to five nodes per plant. At the early nodes of the plant where leaf arrangement is opposite, FA was also calculated for the same traits between opposite leaves at a node. Fluctuating asymmetry is significantly greater in the southern selfing population than in the neighboring outcrossed population. Northern populations do not differ in FA. Fluctuating asymmetry can vary significantly between nodes. The FA values of different leaf traits were not correlated. We show that developmental stability can be measured in plants using FA and within-plant variance. Our data suggest that large differences in breeding system are associated with differences in stability, with more inbred populations being the least stable.  相似文献

The annual limnological dynamics of two meromictic basins of Lake Banyoles (C-III and C-IV) have been studied and compared on the basis of their physical, chemical and biological characters. Stability values calculated for both basins gave 865 g cm cm−2 and 495 g cm cm−2 for C-III and C-IV respectively. These values are in agreement with the fact that C-IV was almost completely mixed during winter. In this basin, during stratification, the monimolimnion increased in thickness as the stability increased. Isolation of the respective monimolimnia resulted in the development of anoxic conditions and the accumulation of sulphide in both C-III and C-IV, which favoured the development of dense populations of sulfur phototrophic bacteria. The purple sulphur bacterium Chromatium minus and the green sulphur bacterium Chlorobium phaeobacteroides were identified as the main components of these photosynthetic populations. The different depths at which the O2/H2S boundary was situated in both basins (and consequently the different light intensity reaching this zone) determined the growth of these bacteria. Light intensities at the chemocline of C-IV reached values up to 5% of surface incident light. In contrast, in C-III this variable was sensibly lower, with values depending on season and seldom reaching 1%. Phototrophic bacteria were consequently found earlier in C-IV than in C-III, where no significant concentrations were found until August. Finally stability is discussed as an important factor controlling chemical and biological dynamics in meromictic lakes.  相似文献

We compared above-ground allocation patterns in mature shrubs of Banksia hookeriana from three 13-year-old populations, growing on nutrient-impoverished sands to determine whether C (dry mass) could be a substitute for mineral nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and NA). The percentage of reproductive structures to total above-ground growth (reproductive effort; RE) was integrated over nine successive reproductive cycles. Only 0.5% of above-ground dry mass was allocated to seeds compared with 31% to total RE. Allocations of N (24%) and P (48%) to seeds, and N (44%) and P (65%) to RE were much higher. Allocations of K, Ca, Mg and Na to seeds (<1–3%), and RE (21–35%) were closer to that of dry mass. Relative allocation (RA) is defined as the proportion of a nutrient element allocated to a structure relative to its dry mass. RA of P to seeds was 91 and N was 44, but for K, Ca, Mg and Na ranged from only 6 for K to<1 for Na. Thus P, and to a lesser extent N, provide a much more sensitive measure of the relative cost of reproduction than C in this nutrient-limited system.  相似文献

Summary Panax ginseng hairy root cultures were established by infecting petiole segments with Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain 15834. Hairy root segments including root tips placed onto phytohormone-free 1/2 Murashige and Skoog solid medium and stored at 4 °C in the dark for 4 months, resumed elongation when the temperature was raised to 25 °C in the dark. For cryopreservation, a vitrification method was applied. Root tips precultured with 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D for 3 days and dehydrated with PVS2 solution for 8 minutes prior to immersion into liquid nitrogen had a survival rate of 60 % and could regenerate. The hairy roots regenerated from cryopreserved root tips grew well and showed the same ginsenoside productivity and patterns as those of the control hairy roots cultured continuously at 25 °C.
