Integrated field and laboratory studies of long-lived, large-bodiedmammals are rare but offer unique opportunities to elucidatethe behavioral ecology of these animals. Here, we used thisapproach to examine whether siblicide in spotted hyenas (Crocutacrocuta) is obligate or facultative. First, we tested predictionsof obligate and facultative hypotheses by using ultrasonographyto compare litter size before and after parturition and identifypotential causes of litter reduction. Second, we compared littersize and composition between wild and captive hyenas to assessvariation in offspring sex ratios. Third, we used demographicdata to compare survivorship among litters of various sizesand compositions. Fourth, we compared sex ratios within twinlitters born in the wild under conditions of high populationdensity and intense feeding competition with those born whenpopulation density and intensity of feeding competition werereduced. Our data were inconsistent with the obligate siblicidehypothesis. Litter reduction occurred during roughly one-thirdof pregnancies in both wild and captive hyenas, and all suchreductions among captives were due to fetal resorptions or stillbirths.Litter sizes and compositions differed little between wild andcaptive hyenas. However, sex ratios in twin litters varied inthe wild with intensity of feeding competition. In conjunctionwith captive data, long-term study of a wild hyena populationunder varying environmental conditions suggests facultativesiblicide is most likely to occur when feeding competition ismost intense, thus offering an ecological explanation for earlierconflicting reports on siblicide in this species.  相似文献

Perceptions of family alcohol use have been linked to adolescent alcohol use behaviors, yet there have been no studies that have assessed this relationship in young adults. This study examined perceptions of family alcohol use and their association with participants’ self-reported alcohol use. Participants included 171 undergraduate students (mean age = 21.67, 71.9 percent female, 75.4 percent Caucasian). Participants completed measures assessing quantity and frequency of alcohol use, negative consequences of use, and sibling relationship quality. They also reported their perceptions of alcohol use for siblings and parents during a typical week. Perceptions of siblings’ quantity of weekly alcohol use were significantly associated with participants’ quantity of alcohol use (r = .21, p = .006) and frequency of alcohol use (r = .23, p = .002). Perceptions of parental alcohol use were not related to the participants’ alcohol use patterns.  相似文献

Advances in reproductive technologies – in particular in genetic screening and selection – have occasioned renewed interest in the moral justifiability of the reasons that motivate the decision to have a child. The capacity to select for desired blood and tissue compatibilities has led to the much discussed 'saviour sibling' cases in which parents seek to 'have one child to save another'. Heightened interest in procreative reasons is to be welcomed, since it prompts a more general philosophical interrogation of the grounds for moral appraisal of reasons-to-parent, and of the extent to which such reasons are relevant to the moral assessment of procreation itself. I start by rejecting the idea that we can use a distinction between 'other-regarding' and 'future-child-regarding' reasons as a basis on which to distinguish good from bad procreative reasons. I then offer and evaluate three potential grounds for elucidating and establishing a relationship between procreative motivation and the rightness/wrongness of procreative conduct: the predictiveness, the verdictiveness, and the expressiveness of procreative reasons.  相似文献

Intrauterine exposure to hyperglycemia is reported to confer increased metabolic risk in later life, supporting the ‘developmental origins of health and disease’ hypothesis. Epigenetic alterations are suggested as one of the possible underlying mechanisms. In this study, we compared pairwise DNA methylation differences between siblings whose intrauterine exposure to maternal gestational diabetes (GDM) were discordant. Methylation of peripheral blood DNA of 18 sibling pairs was measured using Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip assays. Of the 465,447 CpG sites analyzed, 12 showed differential methylation (false discovery rate <0.15), including markers within genes associated with monogenic diabetes (HNF4A) or obesity (RREB1). The overall methylation at HNF4A showed inverse correlations with mRNA expression levels, though non significant. In a gene set enrichment analysis, metabolism and signal transduction pathways were enriched. In conclusion, we found DNA methylation markers associated with intrauterine exposure to maternal GDM, including those within genes previously implicated in diabetes or obesity.  相似文献

No difference in attraction was observed in sibling Artic charr Salvelinus alpinus between water scented by dominant or subordinate major histocompability complex (MHC) identical fish observed in a two-choice fluviarium. In a second experiment, MHC identical sibling donors were given different types of food pellets before the preference test. The test fish showed a significant attraction to the sibling given the same kind of food as the test fish itself during the first 6 h of the fluviarium tests. The results suggest that diet has an influence on the odours released and can, in addition to MHC related odours, be used for information relating to group member identity.  相似文献

Despite frequent suggestions that dominance-subordination relationships in infancy can affect subsequent agonistic potential during adult life, to our knowledge no explicit test has been made. Experiments have shown that adverse conditions during early development can have long-term effects on a variety of traits ranging from growth to competitive behaviour. In many vertebrate species, the main social setting in which the infant develops is a sibling group where competition is often mediated by a dominance hierarchy. Here, we show in a long-lived marine bird that subordination to an aggressive sibling throughout infancy does not compromise aggressiveness years later during adult life. Former junior and senior chicks of the blue-footed booby, whose typical brood of two chicks exhibits a consistent dominance-subordination relationship with strong 'trained winner' and 'trained loser' conditioning effects, did not differ in their aggressiveness while defending their nest against a conspecific intruder stimulus. Our results suggest that aggressive subordination and associated food deprivation, poor growth and elevated stress hormone during infancy do not prejudice aggressiveness of adult boobies during at least the first 13 years of life. Development of important traits such as aggressive tendencies may be buffered against the normal and predictable challenges of infancy.  相似文献

The last decade has seen an explosion of interest in use of genetic markers to estimate effective population size, Ne. Effective population size is important both theoretically (Ne is a key parameter in almost every aspect of evolutionary biology) and for practical application (Ne determines rates of genetic drift and loss of genetic variability and modulates the effectiveness of selection, so it is crucial to consider in conservation). As documented by Palstra & Fraser ( 2012 ), most of the recent growth in Ne estimation can be attributed to development or refinement of methods that can use a single sample of individuals (the older temporal method requires at least two samples separated in time). As with other population genetic methods, performance of new Ne estimators is typically evaluated with simulated data for a few scenarios selected by the author(s). Inevitably, these initial evaluations fail to fully consider the consequences of violating simplifying assumptions, such as discrete generations, closed populations of constant size and selective neutrality. Subsequently, many researchers studying natural or captive populations have reported estimates of Ne for multiple methods; often these estimates are congruent, but that is not always the case. Because true Ne is rarely known in these empirical studies, it is difficult to make sense of the results when estimates differ substantially among methods. What is needed is a rigorous, comparative analysis under realistic scenarios for which true Ne is known. Recently, Gilbert & Whitlock ( 2015 ) did just that for both single‐sample and temporal methods under a wide range of migration schemes. In the current issue of Molecular Ecology, Wang ( 2016 ) uses simulations to evaluate performance of four single‐sample Ne estimators. In addition to assessing effects of true Ne, sample size, and number of loci, Wang also evaluated performance under changing abundance, physical linkage and genotyping errors, as well as for some alternative life histories (high rates of selfing; haplodiploids). Wang showed that the sibship frequency (SF) and linkage disequilibrium (LD) methods perform dramatically better than the heterozygote excess and molecular coancestry methods under most scenarios (see Fig. 1, modified from figure 2 in Wang 2016 ), and he also concluded that SF is generally more versatile than LD. This article represents a truly Herculean effort, and results should be of considerable value to researchers interested in applying these methods to real‐world situations.  相似文献

Effects of density and kinship on growth and metamorphosis in tadpoles ofRana temporalis were studied in a 2×4 factorial experiment. Fifteen egg masses were collected from streams in the Western Ghat region of south India. The tadpoles were raised as siblings or in groups of non-siblings at increasing density levels, viz. 15, 30, 60 and 120/5 l water. With an increase in density level from 15 to 120 tadpoles/5 l water, duration of the larval stage increased and fewer individuals metamorphosed irrespective of whether they belonged to sibling or non-sibling groups by day 100 when the experiments were terminated. The size of individuals at metamorphosis declined significantly with increase in the density of rearing. However, at higher densities (60 and 120 tadpoles/5 l water) sibling group tadpoles performed better compared to mixed groups and took significantly less time to metamorphose. Also, more individuals of sibling groups metamorphosed compared to non-sibling groups at a given density. Mixed rearing retarded growth rates, prolonged larval duration resulting in a wider spectrum of size classes, and lowered the number of individuals recruited to terrestrial life. The study shows that interference competition occurred more strongly in cohorts of mixed relatedness than in sibling groups.  相似文献
