The effects of herbivory on plant invasions are broadly discussed, and many studies have led to widely debated theories. In particular, the effects of herbivores on pine invasion found in different studies vary; in some cases, they controlled their expansion, and in others, they promoted it. On the other hand, vulnerability to invasion by pines differs between community types. Sites with dunes and bare ground are the most heavily invaded, followed by grasslands, while shrublands and forests are least invaded. Because current evidence is mostly observational, some of the varying responses of pine invasions to herbivory should be examined further through replicated experiments. Here, we address experimentally the extent to which preference for the non‐native invasive Pinus contorta by domestic sheep (Ovis aries) depends on the vegetation type. We installed experimental enclosures within two adjacent communities, grassland and shrubland, and in each one, we planted seedlings of P. contorta Douglas and established a sheep density typically recommended for the study area. The number of browsed seedlings, the number and type of branches browsed per seedling, the reduction in height and probability of survival immediately after browsing period were recorded. The number of browsed seedlings and damage to the terminal bud were higher in grassland than in shrubland, while the number of browsed branches per seedling was higher in shrubland than grassland. The reductions in height and probability of survival immediately after browsing were similar in both communities. These results show that moderate levels of sheep herbivory could reduce 20% seedling survival in both communities; nevertheless, the damage patterns differ between them. The sheep browsed more substantial number of seedlings in grasslands than in shrublands. However, if sheep find the seedlings, they damage it more in shrublands. These results suggest that experimental studies comparing communities are important for pine invasion management.  相似文献

Seed size affects the probability of seed predation. Large seeds should be preferred over small seeds but the selective responses of seed predators may also be frequency-dependent. Seed predators may prefer the most common seed sizes (apostatic selection), the rarest ones (antiapostatic selection) or even be unresponsive to the size of seeds. Moreover, seed density may further modify the selective responses of seed predators. We expect that at a low seed density seed consumption should be concentrated on common seed sizes, and at high seed density it should be concentrated on rare seed sizes, as common ones act as a background that makes rare phenotypes more conspicuous (the effect of background). We tested this prediction in a field experiment with seeds of Cryptocarya alba (Lauraceae) at La Campana National Park, central Chile. We presented large and small seeds in two contrasting seed densities (ten and 100 seeds per m2) and at five frequencies of large seeds: 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 0.9. After 28 days we measured the proportions of the two size classes in the remaining seeds. Large seeds were always preferred to small seeds, even when they were at low frequency. Contrary to the predictions, at low seed density consumption was antiapostatic whereas at high seed density selection was independent of frequency. 【目的】以内蒙古砒砂岩区沙棘林为研究对象,探究不同年限沙棘林根际土壤与非根际土壤的理化性质差异,同时分析真菌群落结构差异,并进一步探究两者之间的相互关系。【方法】在内蒙古鄂尔多斯砒砂岩区采集了不同年限沙棘林根际与非根际共计12个土壤样品,采用传统土壤环境指标测定方法测定土壤理化性质,利用高通量测序方法分析土壤真菌群落结构特征,同时分析两者之间的相互关系。【结果】根际土壤全氮、碱解氮、速效钾、有机质和电导率显著高于非根际土壤(P<0.05),随着种植年限的增长,土壤含水率显著增加(P<0.05)。根际土壤群落丰富度和多样性整体高于非根际。子囊菌门(Ascomycota)、被孢霉门(Mortierellomycota)为共有优势菌门;被孢霉属(Mortierella)、青霉菌属(Penicillium)、曲霉菌属(Aspergillus)为共有优势菌属。非根际真菌群落的关键类群是被孢霉属(Mortierella),根际真菌群落的关键类群是赤霉菌属(Gibberella)。冗余分析表明,土壤有机质是影响土壤真菌群落分布的关键因素。被孢霉属(Mortierella)与有机质、碱解氮和全钾之间具有显著相关性(P<0.05);赤霉菌属(Gibberella)与碱解氮、有机质和电导率之间具有显著相关性(P<0.05)。【结论】内蒙古砒砂岩沙棘林种植提高了根际土壤养分和真菌群落的丰富度,促进了土壤生态环境的稳定性。沙棘的种植也提高了该种植地的土壤含水率,促进水土保持,有助于该地区的生态恢复和建设。本研究不仅为该地区的生物多样性保护提供理论依据,更为促进沙棘林生态恢复效果和可持续管理提供科学依据和数据支持。  相似文献

Soil enzymes are central in the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change, and their study can be crucial for the models’ implementation. We investigated for 1 year the effects of warming and seasonality on the potential activities of five soil extracellular enzymes and their relationships with soil moisture, phosphorus (P) concentration, and other soil parameters in a P‐limited Mediterranean semiarid shrubland. The site was continuously subjected to warming since 1999, and we compared data from this study to analogous data from 2004. Warming uniformly increased all enzymes activities, but only when a sufficient amount of soil water was available. Seasonality unevenly altered enzyme activities, thus affecting enzymatic stoichiometry. P deficiency affected enzymatic stoichiometry, favoring the activities of the phosphatases. The effect of warming was stronger in 2014 than 2004, excluding the hypothesis of acclimation of rhizospheric responses to higher temperatures and suggesting that further increases in extracellular enzymatic activities are to be expected if sufficient water is available. Climatic warming will likely generally stimulate soil enzymatic activities and accelerate nutrient mineralization and similar ecological processes such as the production and degradation of biomass and changes in community composition, but which will be limited by water availability, especially in Mediterranean soils in summer. Winters in such ecosystems will benefit from a general increase in activity and production, but biological activity could even decrease in summer, potentially leading to a negative overall balance of nutrient mineralization. This study suggests that a general increase in activity due to warming could lead to faster mineralization of soil organic matter and water consumption in colder climates, until one of these factors in turn becomes limiting. Such trade‐offs between water and temperature in relation with enzyme activity should be considered in biogeochemical models.  相似文献

Microbial biomass nitrogen was measured in unamended (dry) and wetted soils in ten shrubland and grassland communities of the Chihuahuan desert, southern New Mexico, by the fumigation-extraction method. Microbial biomass-N in dry soils was undetectable. Average microbial biomass-N in wetted soils among all plant communities was 15.3 μg g-1 soil. Highest values were found in the communities with the lowest topographic positions, and the minimum values were detected in the spaces between shrubs. Microbial biomass was positively and significantly correlated to soil organic carbon and extractable nitrogen (NH4 + + NO3 -). In a stepwise multiple regression, organic carbon and extractable nitrogen accounted for 40.9 and 5.6%, respectively, of the variance in microbial biomass-N among all the samples. Among communities, the soil microbial biomass was affected by the ratio of carbon to extractable nitrogen. Our results suggest a succession in the control of microbial biomass from nitrogen to carbon when the ratio of carbon to nitrogen decreases during desertification.  相似文献

The effects of habitat edges on nest survival of shrubland birds, many of which have experienced significant declines in the eastern United States, have not been thoroughly studied. In 2007 and 2008, we collected data on nests of 5 shrubland passerine species in 12 early successional forest patches in North Carolina, USA. We used model selection methods to assess the effect of distance to cropland and mature forest edge on nest predation rates and additionally accounted for temporal trends, nest stage, vegetation structure, and landscape context. For nests of all species combined, nest predation decreased with increasing distance to cropland edge, by nearly 50% at 250 m from the cropland edge. Nest predation of all species combined also was higher in patches with taller saplings and less understory vegetation, especially in the second year of our study when trees were 4–6 m tall. Predation of field sparrow (Spizella pusilla) nests was lower in landscapes with higher agricultural landcover. Nest predation risk for shrubland birds appears to be greater near agricultural edges than mature forest edges, and natural forest succession may drive patterns of local extirpation of shrubland birds in early successional forest patches. Thus, we suggest that habitat patches managed for shrubland bird populations should be considerably large or wide (>250 m) when adjacent to crop fields and maintained in structurally diverse early seral stages. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

We investigated modes of regeneration of dominant species of the mexical vegetation after fire. The mexical shrubland shows a remarkable structural, morphological, and floristic similarity to Mediterranean-type vegetation and is considered a relict of the Madro-Tertiary Geoflora under a non-Mediterranean climate. This vegetation provides an ideal scenario to test the role of fire in Mediterranean ecosystems because historical fire occurrence is absent and the species assembly is constituted mostly by Madro-Tertiary elements and Neotropical species (some of them, endemic species from Mexico). The existence of congeneric species of the California chaparral allows us to determine the regeneration ability of these communities after fire in relation to resprouting and seeding strategies, which are widespread modes reported in the Mediterranean-type vegetation. By the experimental application of fire in the two biogeographical groups of species, we tested the hypothesis that low resprouting ability of California congeneric species (Madro-Tertiary species) after fire would indicate that fire has played an important selective force in the resprouting habit. A low resprouting ability in the Neotropical group of species would suggest that fire has molded the set of species dominating fire-prone environments.Our results indicated that resprouting is a widespread trait in the mexical species characterized by the presence of lignotubers and burls. Resprouting can be considered an ancient trait, probably linked to losses of aboveground biomass, that became a pre-adaptation in Mediterranean fire-prone communities. The Neotropical group of species showed less ability to regenerate after fire, and small plants were more likely to die after disturbance in this group than in the Madro-Tertiary group. The resprouting feature and the seeder strategy of other species after a fire in the mexical shrubland are similar to Mediterranean-type ecosystems, emphasizing their common origin and the relevance of phylogenetic and biogeographical studies to explain current patterns of vegetation.  相似文献
