In a rhizotron experiment the influence of Phytophthora citricola on root development, rhizosphere chemistry and nutritional status of beech seedlings was studied. After infection, the fine root system was seriously damaged and 6 weeks after inoculation some seedlings died. Plants infected with Phytophthora citricola had less steep concentration gradients of K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and NO in the rhizosphere soil solution as compared with uninfected seedlings, which indicates reduced activity in nutrient uptake. It is concluded that plants try to compensate their deficit in fine root biomass and nutrient acquisition by retranslocation of nutrients.  相似文献

The populations of N(2)-fixing and denitrifying bacteria in an acid forest soil near Cologne were characterized by gene probing. The DNA isolated from the soil for this purpose was suitable for DNA-DNA hybridization using 0.4-0.7-kb probes targeting denitrification enzymes, dinitrogenase reductase (nifH) and eubacterial 16S rRNA. The densitometrical comparison of band intensities obtained in these Southern hybridizations indicated that the highest number of total bacteria, of denitrifying and N(2)-fixing microorganisms always occurred in the upper ( approximately 5 cm) soil layer. The concentration of all these organisms decreased in parallel with the soil depth. The soil investigated was rich in nitrate in all layers, and the availability of nitrate apparently did not govern the distribution of denitrifying and N(2)-fixing bacteria in this soil. Soil cores investigated in the laboratory formed N(2)O on addition of nitrate irrespective of the presence of C(2)H(2). Hybridization intensities, with a gene probe for the 16S rRNA, and MPN numbers were generally higher in soil samples taken from the roots of plants than in the bulk soil. There was no selective enrichment of denitrifying or N(2)-fixing bacteria at the roots. The data obtained by hybridizing isolated soil DNA generally matched previous results obtained with culturable bacteria.  相似文献

At five European sites, differing in atmospheric Sinputs by a factor of 6, and differing in S isotope signatures ofthese inputs by up to 14 (CDT), we investigated thedirection and magnitude of an assimilation-related 34S shiftand the relationship between atmospheric deposition and Sretention in selected ecosystem compartments. Bulk precipitationand spruce throughfall were collected between 1994 and 1996 inthe Isle of Mull (Scotland), Connemara (Ireland), Thorne Moors(England), Rybárenská slat' and Oceán (both Czech Republic) andanalyzed for sulfate concentrations and 34S ratios. Eighteenreplicate samples per site of living Sphagnum collected inunforested peatlands and 18 samples of spruce forest floorcollected near each of the peatlands were also analyzed for Sconcentrations and 34S ratios. Assimilation of S was associatedwith a negative 34S shift. Plant tissues systematicallypreferred the light isotope 32S, on average by 2. There wasa strong positive correlation between the non-marine portion ofthe atmospheric S input and total S concentration in forest floorand Sphagnum, respectively (R = 0.97 and R = 0.85). Elevated Sinputs lead to higher S retention in these two organic-richcompartments of the ecosystem. It follows that equal emphasismust be placed on organic S as on adsorption/desorption ofinorganic sulfate when studying acidification reversal inecosystems. The sea-shore sites had rainfall enriched in theheavy isotope 34S due to an admixture of sea-spray. The inlandsites had low 34S reflecting 34S of sulfur emitted from localcoal-burning power stations. Sphagnum had always lower S contentsand higher 34S ratios compared to forest floor. The within-siterange of 34S ratios of Sphagnum and forest floor was wide (upto 12) suggesting that at least six replicate samples shouldbe taken when using 34S as a tracer.  相似文献

The markers of oxidative stress were measured in four cerebrocortical regions of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and age-matched control brains. In controls the levels of diene conjugates (DC) and lipid peroxides (LOOH) were significantly higher in the sensory postcentral and occipital primary cortex than in the temporal inferior or frontal inferior cortex. The antioxidant capacity (AOC) was highest in the temporal, and GSH in the frontal inferior cortex. The highest activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was found in the occipital primary cortex. Compared with controls, significantly higher level of DC and LOOH and attenuated AOC were evident in AD temporal inferior cortex. In AD frontal inferior cortex moderate increase in LOOH was associated with positive correlation between SOD activity and counts of senile plaques. Our data suggest that in AD cerebral cortex, the oxidative stress is expressed in the reducing sequence: temporal inferior cortex > frontal inferior cortex > sensory postcentral cortex occipital primary cortex, corresponding to the histopathological spreading of AD from the associative to primary cortical areas.  相似文献

The introduced tree Sapium sebiferum (Euphorbiaceae) is considered a serious threat to the preservation of the coastal prairie region of Louisiana and Texas, although it is currently uncommon in the western part of the region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of location, soils, and available moisture on the growth and survival of S. sebiferum in coastal prairie. In a field experiment, S. sebiferum mortality was significantly greater at a western site than at central and eastern sites. The greatest mortality and least growth of surviving plants occurred on a soil from the western region, regardless of site. A greenhouse study also found that S. sebiferum growth was lowest on the western soil. Watering frequency significantly affected S. sebiferum growth, except on the western soil. Sapium sebiferum growth responded to both nitrogen and phosphorus additions for all soils. Soil analyses revealed the highest sand, sodium, and phosphorus contents, and much higher electrical conductivity in the western soil. It is concluded that the soil examined from the western region is unfavorable for S. sebiferum growth, though not to the extent to preclude S. sebiferum completely. Evidence suggests that soil salinity may be the primary cause of the poor S. sebiferum growth at the western site.  相似文献

Reduced recruitment of blue oak (Quercus douglasii) seedlings in California grasslands and woodlands may result from shifts in seasonal soil water availability coincident with replacement of the native perennial herbaceous community by Mediterranean annuals. We used a combination of container and field experiments to examine the interrelationships between soil water potential, herbaceous neighborhood composition, and blue oak seedling shoot emergence and growth. Neighborhoods of exotic annuals depleted soil moisture more rapidly than neighborhoods of a perennial grass or "no-neighbor" controls. Although effects of neighborhood composition on oak seedling root elongation were not statistically significant, seedling shoot emergence was significantly inhibited in the annual neighborhoods where soil water was rapidly depleted. Seedling water status directly reflected soil water potential, which also determined the extent and duration of oak seedling growth during the first year. End-of-season seedling height significantly influenced survival and growth in subsequent years. While growth and survival of blue oak seedlings may be initially constrained by competition with herbaceous species, subsequent competition with adult blue oak trees may further contribute to reduced sapling recruitment.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We previously demonstrated that atrial natriuretic factor and B- and C-type natriuretic peptides (ANF, BNP, and CNP, respectively) modified catecholamine metabolism by increasing the neuronal uptake and decreasing the neuronal release of norepinephrine in the rat hypothalamus. The aim of the present work was to study the effects of natriuretic peptides BNP and CNP on norepinephrine uptake as an index of the amine metabolism in discrete areas and nuclei of the central nervous system (CNS) of the rat.2. Experiments were carried out in vitro using the punchout technique in diverse areas and nuclei of rat CNS. Results showed that 100 nM BNP and 1 nM CNP increased norepinephrine (NE) uptake in all brain areas and nuclei studied.3. Present results permit us to conclude that BNP and CNP regulate NE metabolism independently of the encephalic area or nucleus involved. In fact, NE uptake increased in nuclei related to the regullation of cardivascular activity as well as nuclei associated with endocrine metabolism and hydrosaline homeostasis. These observations suggest that BNP and CNP may be involved in the regulation of these physiological processes in an indirect manner through modifications of noradrenergic neurotransmission. Present findings provide futher support to the hypothesis that CNP would be the main natriuretic peptide in brain. Furthermore, previous as well as present results support the role of the natriureic peptides as neuromodulators of noradrenergic transmission at the presynaptic level.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate how soil type, elevated N deposition (0.7 vs. 7 g N m–2y–1) and tree species influence the potential effects of elevated CO2 (370 vs. 570 mol CO2 mol–1) on N pools and fluxes in forest soils. Model spruce-beech forest ecosystems were established on a nutrient-rich calcareous sand and on a nutrient-poor acidic loam in large open-top chambers. In the fourth year of treatment, we measured N concentrations in the soil solution at different depths, estimated N accumulation by ion exchange resin (IER) bags, and quantified N export in drainage water, denitrification, and net N uptake by trees. Under elevated CO2, concentrations of N in the soil solution were significantly reduced. In the nutrient-rich calcareous sand, CO2 enrichment decreased N concentrations in the soil solution at all depths (–45 to –100%). In the nutrient-poor acidic loam, the negative CO2 effect was restricted to the uppermost 5 cm of the soil. Increasing the N deposition stimulated the negative impact of CO2 enrichment on soil solution N in the acidic loam at 5 cm depth from –20% at low N inputs to –70% at high N inputs. In the nutrient-rich calcareous sand, N additions did not influence the CO2 effect on soil solution N. Accumulation of N by IER bags, which were installed under individual trees, was decreased at high CO2 levels under spruce in both soil types. Under beech, this decrease occurred only in the calcareous sand. N accumulation by IER bags was negatively correlated with current-years foliage biomass, suggesting that the reduction of soil N availability indices was related to a CO2-induced growth enhancement. However, the net N uptake by trees was not significantly increased by elevated CO2. Thus, we suppose that the reduced N concentrations in the soil solution at elevated CO2 concentrations were rather caused by an increased N immobilisation in the soil. Denitrification was not influenced by atmospheric CO2 concentrations. CO2 enrichment decreased nitrate leaching in drainage by 65%, which suggests that rising atmospheric CO2 potentially increases the N retention capacity of forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Within the oak woodlands of California there is often a distinct shift in the botanical composition between the open grassland and the herbaceous understory beneath oak canopy. Botanical sampling at two woodland sites indicated that the annual grass Bromus diandrus was dominant under deciduous blue oak canopy, while a congener, Bromus hordeaceus, was dominant in open grassland. We examined the relative importance of congeneric competition and edaphic factors in creating these differences in species distribution in two separate field experiments that manipulated both congeneric and intraspecific competition, as well as soil type. We used the demographic measure of relative reproductive rate as an index of population growth. In general, demographic performance correctly predicted the distribution of the two annual grasses in the field. Our results indicate that reduced abundance of B. hordeaceus under canopy reflects the negative effects of competition with B. diandrus. In contrast, B. diandrus is little affected by competition from B. hordeaceus. The reduced abundance of B. diandrus in open grassland may result, in part, from its inability to adapt as well as B. hordeaceus to lower nutrient availability in soils of the open grassland.  相似文献

Regeneration of many late-successional tree species depends on specialized safe sites. The primary objective was to investigate the roles of seedbed and moisture retention as dimensions of safe sites for the early regeneration of drought-sensitive northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis). We hypothesized that rates of germination, survival, and growth of T. occidentalis are unlikely to differ among seedbed types under conditions of abundant water, but that differences are likely to emerge as water becomes more limited. In a 67-d greenhouse experiment, cedar seeds were sown on logs, leaf litter, and soil of cedar and paper birch (Betula papyrifera) canopy origin. Seedbeds were subjected to three water treatments. Among the water treatments, highest germination rates occurred within the high water treatment, although germination on cedar litter was comparable to that of the low water treatment. Higher germination and survival rates occurred on decayed logs than other natural seedbeds for medium (P = 0.001) and low (P < 0.0001) water treatments. Germination on birch logs occurred at higher rates than on cedar logs within the low water treatment (P = 0.04). Seedling growth for the medium water treatment was lower on leaf litter than any other type of seedbed (P < 0.01). Results generally demonstrated that the interplay between seedbed and moisture retention is a component of safe sites for T. occidentalis regeneration.  相似文献
