Shoot growth phenology was compared for the saplings of evergreen and deciduous woody species sharing the same microsite.
Growth initiation occurred earlier in evergreens (among co-stratal species) while deciduous species completed their growth
earlier. Shoot growth rate was significantly greater (P<0.01) for deciduous trees than evergreen trees. The amount of shoot elongations and shoot diameter was also significantly
greater (P<0.01) for deciduous trees than evergreens. On the other hand, among shrubs the amount of shoot elongation and shoot diameter
was greater for evergreens but the rate of elongation and diameter was more or less similar for both. The duration of shoot
elongation and shoot diameter was significantly longer in evergreens than the deciduous species. Leaf packing (number of leaves
per shoot) was significantly more dense in evergreen trees (P<0.01) than in deciduous tree species. Leaf packing was more dense in evergreen than deciduous shrubs but the difference was
not significant. Leaf area (per individual leaf) at full expansion was significantly greater (P<0.01) in deciduous species. Leaf dry mass and specific leaf mass in the initial stage was significantly greater for evergreen
species than for deciduous species. The number of buds/10 cm of shoot was higher in evergreens. However, the per cent mortality

- 1 Uroleucon gravicome (Patch) feeds on annual Erigeron species and on perennial Solidago species.
- 2 To test whether Solidago and Erigeron are analogous to winter and summer hosts of typical host-alternating aphids, reproductive performance, host preferences, and host associations were measured for E.strigosus, S.juncea and S.nemoralis during spring, summer and autumn.
- 3 Caged individuals can reproduce on both genera throughout the season, though colonies are rare on Solidago during summer.
- 4 Developmental rate, adult weight, and fecundity decline between May and August on all hosts; however, the drop is least on E.strigosus, intermediate on S.nemoralis, and greatest on S.juncea.
- 5 Throughout the season, reproductive performance is at least as great on Erigeron as on Solidago, the difference being least in spring.
- 6 Soluble nitrogen content shows the same seasonal trends as reproductive performance, declining in all hosts, but declining least in E.strigosus.
- 7 Preference tests and field records show that U.gravicorne moves from Solidago to Erigeron when the first alatae mature in late spring, feeds on Erigeron during the summer, and, in late summer, returns to Solidago where overwintering eggs are laid.

The composition and seasonal variation of the ichthyoplankton community in a shallow tidal channel in Cadiz Bay was studied for 5 years (1984 1988), taking fortnightly samples with a conical tide-strained net (0.5 mm mesh). Thirty-nine species belonging to 21 families of teleosts were caught. Four species ( Pomutoschistus microps Kroyer, Atherina hoyeri Risso, Liza rumuda Risso and Lizu a lira Ia Risso) totalled more than 90% of the annual ichthyoplankton abundance. Three species, assumed to be permanent residents, dominated the number offish (837%), and were represented by all their developing stages; 26 species (66.7%) were temporary residents, contributing 17.2% to the total abundance and were represented only by early developing stages; the remaining 10 species were classified as rare. Monthly numbers of species and individuals showed seasonal variation with a main annual peak in spring and in late spring-early summer, respectively. The diversity (H') and evenness (S) indices of this community were low (0.13 to 1.83 and 0.03 to 0.71. respectively), with higher values in winter and late summer, and both were significantly correlated with the log-transformed density of temporary residents (r = 0.43 and 0.41, respectively; P<0.0l) and permanent residents (r=−0.75 and −0.79, respectively; P<0.01). Multivariate classification analysis of samples revealed that similar cyclical changes were taking place in the structure of this ichthyoplankton community every year; three periods could be differentiated: (1) a cool period of low fish density but relatively high diversity; (2) moderate temperature and salinity with high numbers of species and density but low diversity and (3) a warm period of moderate diversity and fish density. 相似文献

Seasonal nutrient enrichment experiments (short-term bioassays) were conducted in three Florida lakes of different trophic
states to determine the effects of addition of various nutrient combinations upon chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops. Nutrient enriched surface water samples with crustacean zooplankton removed were incubated
in situ in clear polyethylene bags for 3 to 6 days. The 25 factorial design employed two levels (ambient and enriched) of each of five nutrients [NH4

and a cation (Ca2+ or K+) or trace elements]. Ammonium produced significant increases in chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops in all experiments. Phosphate produced similar results in the mesotrophic lake, but the
eutrophic lakes had both positive and nonsignificant responses which varied seasonally between lakes. Iron increased chlorophyll
a in most experiments but affected total phytoplankton standing crop only during the summer and fall. Silicon had negative
effects in some experiments. Cations and trace elements produced marked differences between lakes for chlorophyll a, but total phytoplankton standing crop showed few significant responses. Synergistic responses to two- and three-factor interactions
were observed in all lakes. Differences in the responses of phytoplankton taxonomic divisions to enrichment may be responsible

V. squamata is unusual in being pollinated by a few, generalist bee species despite having very large flowers, and having a distinctive pulsed flowering phenology. Summary Larvae of the aspen blotch miner, Phyllonorycter salicifoliella Chambers (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), feed within leaves of three host-tree species in north-central Minnesota, USA. Far more individuals occur on Populus tremuloides than on P. balsamifera or P. grandidentata. We tested whether this pattern of host use reflected variable performance among alternative hosts by examining survivorship, sources of mortality, pupal mass, feeding efficiency, and development time of miners on each tree species. We also determined foliar water, nitrogen, condensed tannin, and phenolic glycoside content of host trees to test if host-tree chemical attributes were responsible for differences in performance. There was no significant difference in egg-to-adult survival among miners on different hosts, although dominant sources of mortality did vary. Miners on P. grandidentata suffered less parasitism and more predation than those on the other hosts, even though most parasitoid species attacked miners on all hosts. The other performance parameters varied among host species, but not in a consistent pattern. Pupal mass was greatest on P. tremuloides and P. balsamifera, the hosts with comparatively high foliar nitrogen and low phenolic glycoside concentrations. However, feeding efficiency was greatest and development time shortest for miners on P. grandidentata. Thus, pupal mass was the only index of performance maximized on P. tremuloides, the most commonly used host. Infrequent occurrence of Phyllonorycter salicifoliella on P. grandidentata results in part from phenological differences between this and the other host species. Low oviposition rates on P. balsamifera are correlated with low abundance of this host at the study site and a phenolic glycoside profile different from that of the other host species. 相似文献
