Two Dutch heathland sites Hoorneboeg (HB) and Ede, dominated by Deschampsia flexuosa and differing in nitrate production, were sampled for an entire growing season. A large number of soil and plant parameters were monitored in an attempt to assess the contribution of nitrate in the N supply and its assimilation by Deschampsia.Average NO3 and NH4 + concentrations (mg kg–1) in the top 10-cm depth were 0.03 and 2.2, respectively, for HB, and 2.1 and 6.7, respectively, for Ede. Laboratory incubations of intact cores and experiments with FH-layer suspensions showed significantly higher mineralization and nitrification rates for the Ede site during most of the season. Nitrification was largely controlled by the rate of net N-mineralization, which in turn was highly affected by soil moisture. Nitrate production was virtually zero at HB and accounted for 25% of the net N-mineralization at Ede.Shoot chemical composition showed no essential differences for the two sites, but mean in vivo (current) foliar NRA was almost 2-fold higher at Ede than at HB, indicating some utilization of nitrate at the former location. At the HB site with essentially no nitrate production, however, enzyme activities were clearly higher than basal constitutive levels in NH4 +-fed plants. Apparently, shoot NRA at the HB site became positively affected by factors other than nitrate availability and/or showed disproportional increases in response to atmospheric nitrate inputs. Root NRA displayed the same low basal level at the two sites. Nitrate fertilization (100 kg N ha–1) yielded maximally induced foliar NRAs similar to levels found in hydroponic nitrate plants. Although no accumulation of free NO3 was observed in shoots from fertilized plots, increases in foliar concentrations of both organic N and carboxylates clearly indicated nitrate assimilation. Root NRA showed no response to nitrate addition.It is concluded that current NRA measurements in Deschampsia at heathland sites are of limited value only, especially when interpreted in isolation. An unusual Group 2 LEA gene family in citrus responsive to low temperature   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Six cDNAs representing unique cold-induced sequences have been cloned from the hardy citrus relative Poncirus trifoliata. Among these, pBCORc115 and pBCORc119 were found to belong to the same gene family. Sequencing data indicated that pBCORc115 and pBCORc119 each contained an open reading frame, coding for a 19.8 kDa protein (COR19) and a smaller 11.4 kDa protein (COR11) respectively. Inspection of the deduced amino acid sequences revealed three large repeats in COR19, but only one was present in the COR11. Two elements: a Q-clustered tract and a K-rich motif were identified in each repeat. The K-rich motifs were similar to those of cotton D-11 and Group 2 LEA proteins. A Serine-cluster, a common feature in many Group 2 LEA-like proteins, was also found in these proteins, but it was in an unusual position at the carboxy-terminus. A bipartite motif of basic residues, similar to known nuclear targeting sequences, was also present in COR19 and COR11, suggesting that members of this protein family may have a nuclear targeting function. The expression of COR19 mRNA in response to cold acclimation, drought, flooding, and salinization was examined. COR19 expression in leaf tissue was induced in response to cold acclimation, but repressed during drought and flooding stress.  相似文献

Physicochemical attributes were measured and aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected from six wetlands near Perth, Western Australia at three weekly intervals over a 13 month period from August 1988 to September 1989. The six wetlands encompassed a range of depths, pH, concuctivities, nutrient concentrations and colours. Temporal changes in the macroinvertebrate communities appeared to be related to seasonal changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of the wetlands. Community composition differed more between the less enriched wetlands then the higly enriched wetlands where communities were generally similar. High species richness was associated with seasonal drying. High macro invertebrate abundance appeared to be associated with the presence of either green algal or cyanobacterial blooms in the enriched wetlands. The highest macroinvertebrate biomass was recorded in wetlands with both cyanobacterial blooms and abundant macrophytes present.  相似文献

Habitat preference, seasonal occurrence, starvation resistance, hatching eggs ofBranchipus schaefferi, and effects of predation onB. schaefferi were studied.Branchipus was only present in turbid, unvegetated ponds and absent in ponds which contain higher aquatic vegetation and theSpirogyra sp. The first individuals ofB. schaefferi appeared in April when water temperature was 10 °C and the last adults in November at a water temperature of 3.5 °C. Up to 6 reproducing generations were observed during this period. Abundance ofB. schaefferi was higher in temporary ponds than in permanent ponds. Sex ratio was close to unity for most of the year. Body size ofB. schaefferi males and females was significantly positively correlated with pond volume. Without foodB. schaefferi could survive for 1.5 to 2 days at 20 °C and 4 to 5 days at 10 °C. Hatching success of eggs decreased when eggs were dried for 7 months. Freezing of eggs had no effect on hatching success. From] the predators tested,Chaoborus sp. larvae clearly selected smallB. schaefferi; one consumed approximately 6Branchipus d–1 at a density of 6 to 12 prey 1–1. The other predators, dragonfly larvae, and larvae and adults ofTriturus alpestris selected alternative prey types, for exampleTubifex sp. and ostracods.  相似文献

In Lake Peipsi (Estonia) Polyarthra species often dominate the rotifer community, and are represented by 6 species: Polyarthra dolichoptera Idelson, P. longiremis Carlin, P. luminosa Kutikova, P. major Burckhardt, P. remata Skorikov, P. vulgaris Carlin. The highest diversity occurs in August–September, with P. remata and P. luminosa most abundant. Morphometric data including measurements of body, fins and various types of eggs are given. A study on spatio-temporal distribution of microphytobhethos in intertidal zones of Tagus Estuary was carried out from 1990 to 1992. Near Lisbon, Portugal, Tagus Estuary is a shallow mesotidal estuary, covering an area of 320 km2. The intertidal area ranges from 20 to 40% off the total area and it is constituted mainly by mudflats. Intertidal flats are richly populated by microalgae, diatoms being the most important and ubiquitos group.Spatial variation of microphytobethos was studied in spring 1990, 21 different sites were sampled. Microphytobenthos biomass was evaluated as chlorophyll a content of the surface centimeter, ranging from 10 to 240 mg m–2. A Principal Component Analysis showed that 62% of the total variability found in intertidal flats of Tagus estuary could be attributed to two major factors: sediment type and tidal height. A hierarchical grouping defined 3 major groups of similar stations, each one representing a different strata of the ecosystem.One station from each group was chosen for the study of the temporal variation. A sampling, rogram took place from April 1991 to April 1992, with fortnightly sampling, the Chl a ranged from 20–300 mg m–2. No clear seasonal variation was found, and our results indicated that tidal height of sampledsite played an essential role in temporal biomass evolution, thus upper littoral sites were influenced by climatic parameters, whereas in lower sites action of tides mainly controlled microphytic biomass.
Résumé Une étude sur l'hétérogénéité spatio-temporelle du microphytobenthos dans les sédiments intertidaux de l'Estuaire du Tage a été accompli de 1990 á 1992.L'Estuaire du Tage, prés de Lisbonne (Portugal) est un estuaire peu profond, mesotidal, avec une aire total de 320 km2. L'aire intertidale est comprise entre 20 et 40% du total, et constituéé surtout par des vasiéres. Ces slikkes sont peuplées par une communauté assez riche de microalgues, ou les diatomées sont les plus abundantes.La variation spatialle du microphytobenthos était évalué au Printemps 1990, ou 21 différentes stations étaient échantillonnées. La biomasse était évalué par la concentration enchlorophylle a du premier centimétre de sédiment, qui a varié de 10 á 240 mg Chl a m–2. Une Analyse en Composants Principales a montré que 62% de la variabilité de la biomasse était lié á deux facteurs: le sédiment et l'hauteur vis-á-vis la marée. Une classification hiérarchique des stations par similitude a établi 3 groupes principaux, représantantles différents strates de écecosytéme.Une station de chaque groupement a été choisie pour l'étude de la variation temporelle, qui s'est deroulé d'avril 1991 á avril 1992, avec des prélévements deux fois par mois. Les valeurs de Chl a obtenus vont de 20 á 300 mg m–2. Les variations saisonniéres observées ne sont pas claires: nos résultats indiquent que l'hauteur de la station (m) joue un rôle essentiel dans l'évolution temporel de la biomasse, c'est á dire, la biomasse microalgal des sites du supra-littoral est influencié par les paramétres climatiques, tandis que dans l'infra-littoral c'est l'action des marées le facteur principal.

Since Hydrodictyon reticulatum was introduced to New Zealand it has spread rapidly and produced persistent annual nuisance growths in areas where nuisance algal had not occurred previously. Field bioassays were conducted at 10 sites between August 1993 and February 1995 to evaluate the seasonal growth patterns and the factors controlling growth under natural conditions. H. reticulatum exhibited a strong seasonal growth pattern with growth rates up to 0.33 doublings d-1 from August to March, are duction in growth rate in April and little or no growth from May to July. The H. reticulatum present in New Zealand has are latively low requirement for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in comparison with other nuisance species, with its growth rate being saturated at 200 mg m-3. This and the high affinity for DIN as shown by a Ks of 29 mg m-3 have been key factors in the establishment of nuisance growths of H. reticulatum in New Zealand. The hydrological structure of the French coastal part of the eastern English Channel is strongly linked with tidal regimes and riverine input. Two distinct water masses are separated by a frontal area and drift along the coast in SW–NE direction. These two water masses are well-mixed during the entire year. We studied the seasonal dynamic of nitrogenous nutrients, chlorophyll a and organic particulate carbon and nitrogen at two stations, characteristic of these water masses, during the year 1994. Results show (i) a winter stock of nitrate and ammonium, (ii) a pre-bloom period corresponding to the use of ammonium, (iii) a high bloom period of short duration using nitrate, (iv) a post-bloom period with little phytoplanktonic activity probably limited by nutrients other than nitrogen and (v) an autumnal period of reconstitution of stock. The essential difference between the two stations is the importance of winter stock of nutrients and of bloom chlorophyll a concentration, with the coastal station richer than the offshore one. An assumption about the nitrogen available for new production in this area gives a value of 57% of the winter stock of inorganic nitrogen.  相似文献

The reproductive tracts of 89 female subantarctic fur seals, taken at Gough Island between November 1977 and October 1978, were examined. Females started ovulating at age 4 yr and all 6-yr-old females were sexually mature. They are mono-ovulatory, alternating between ovaries, and only single embryos were found. Females older than 13 yr ( n = 11) showed poor follicular development and some failed to ovulate. The gestation period (first recorded ovulation to first recorded birth) was 360 d, while delayed implantation (first recorded ovulation to first recorded implantation) lasted for 139 days. Follicle numbers in the functional ovary declined sharply after ovulation while the corpus luteum increased in size until at least 1 mo prior to parturition. The number of follicles in the contralateral ovary increased after midwinter (June/July), and the mean size of the largest follicles peaked prior to ovulation in December. The mean size of the largest follicles increased in both ovaries near implantation time, after reaching a low subsequent to, ovulation. The regressing corpus albicans, conspicuous for approximately 3 mo after parturition, could not be detected macroscopically within one year postpartum. Subantarctic fur seals at Gough Island have a distinct postreproductive class of older females. The pregnancy rate for all females ≥4 yr of age was 79%, and it was 84.5% for the sexually mature group of ≥6 yr of age, while the mean age at puberty was 4.80 yr.  相似文献

A new and simple method for freezing of bovine morulae and blastocysts was developed. Embryos were predehydrated at room temperature, frozen at -30 degrees C (cooling rate = 12 degrees C/min), and plunged into liquid nitrogen. This method was compared in vitro and in vivo to the slow freezing method (0.3 degrees C/min to -30 degrees C). Predehydration of the embryos in 1.5M glycerol was achieved by sucrose solution that makes the cells osmotically shrink. After the predehydrated morulae and blastocysts were frozen and thawed, 6 .4% (33 52 ) were developed in vitro for 48h and 44.2% (23 52 ) were hatched. Development obtained with slowly frozen embryos were 70.8% (17 24 ) and 58.3% (14 24 ) respectively. After transfer to recipient heifers, 33.3% (7 21 ) of the embryos frozen according this new method developed normally into viable foetuses or calves. This was the case for 48.5% (16 33 ) of the slowly frozen embryos.  相似文献
