Galectins in teleost fish: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model species to address their biological roles in development and innate immunity 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cell surface glycans, such as glycocoproteins and glycolipids, encode information that modulates interactions between cells, or between cells and the extracellular matrix, by specifically regulating the binding to cell surface-associated or soluble carbohydrate-binding receptors, such as lectins. Rapid modifications of exposed carbohydrate moieties by glycosidases and glycosyltransferases, and the equally dynamic patterns of expression of their receptors during early development, suggest that both play important roles during embryogenesis. Among a variety of biological roles, galectins have been proposed to mediate developmental processes, such as embryo implantation and myogenesis. However, the high functional redundancy of the galectin repertoire in mammals has hindered the rigorous characterization of their specific roles by gene knockout approaches in murine models. In recent years, the use of teleost fish as alternative models for addressing developmental questions in mammals has expanded dramatically, and we propose their use for the elucidation of biological roles of galectins in embryogenesis and innate immunity. All three major galectin types, proto, chimera, and tandem-repeat, are present in teleost fish, and phylogenetic topologies confirm the expected clustering with their mammalian orthologues. As a model organism, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) may help to overcome limitations imposed by the murine models because it offers substantial advantages: external fertilization, transparent embryos that develop rapidly in vitro, a diverse toolbox of established methods to manipulate early gene expression, a growing collection of mutations that affect early embryonic development, availability of cell lines, and most importantly, an apparently less diversified galectin repertoire. Female gravidity (assessed according to the roundness of the female's abdomen) in a population of Corsican river blennies Salaria fluviatilis showed a cyclical pattern over the breeding season. Behavioural interactions between males and females matched these cycles. The rate of female visits to males' territories did not differ between periods of high and low daily average gravidity in the population. While males courted a similar proportion of females in both periods, they rejected a higher proportion of females when daily average gravidity was high. Furthermore female courtship of males was observed at this time, whereas it never occurred during low daily average gravidity periods. Thus, temporal variation in female availability for spawning caused both males and females to alter their behaviour in such a way that a sex role reversal in courtship was observed. 相似文献

Cannabis sativa, widely known as ‘Marijuana’ poses a dilemma for being a blend of both good and bad medicinal effects. The historical use of Cannabis for both medicinal and recreational purposes suggests it to be a friendly plant. However, whether the misuse of Cannabis and the cannabinoids derived from it can hamper normal body physiology is a focus of ongoing research. On the one hand, there is enough evidence to suggest that misuse of marijuana can cause deleterious effects on various organs like the lungs, immune system, cardiovascular system, etc. and also influence fertility and cause teratogenic effects. However, on the other hand, marijuana has been found to offer a magical cure for anorexia, chronic pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and disturbed sleep. Indeed, most recently, the United Nations has given its verdict in favour of Cannabis declaring it as a non-dangerous narcotic. This review provides insights into the various health effects of Cannabis and its specialized metabolites and indicates how wise steps can be taken to promote good use and prevent misuse of the metabolites derived from this plant. 相似文献

Male and female parents often provide different type and amount of care to their offspring. Three major drivers have been proposed to explain parental sex roles: (1) differential gametic investment by males and females that precipitates into sex difference in care, (2) different intensity of sexual selection acting on males and females, and (3) biased social environment that facilitates the more common sex to provide more care. Here, we provide the most comprehensive assessment of these hypotheses using detailed parental care data from 792 bird species covering 126 families. We found no evidence for the gametic investment hypothesis: neither gamete sizes nor gamete production by males relative to females was related to sex difference in parental care. However, sexual selection correlated with parental sex roles, because the male share in care relative to female decreased with both extra‐pair paternity and frequency of male polygamy. Parental sex roles were also related to social environment, because male parental care increased with male‐biased adult sex ratios (ASRs). Taken together, our results are consistent with recent theories suggesting that gametic investment is not tied to parental sex roles, and highlight the importance of both sexual selection and ASR in influencing parental sex roles. 相似文献

Parasites are often key players in biological invasions since they can mediate the impact of host invasions or can themselves become invasive species. However, the nature and extent of parasite-mediated invasions are often difficult to delineate. Here, we used individual-based, weighted bipartite networks to study the roles (degrees of interactions of individuals in a modular network according to their within- and among-module connections) played by native and invasive host individuals to their parasite communities. We studied two phylogenetically and ecologically close fish species, Mugil cephalus s.l. and Planiliza haematocheilus (Teleostei: Mugilidae). Planiliza haematocheilus is native to the Sea of Japan and invasive in the Sea of Azov whereas, M. cephalus s.l. is native to both seas. Based on the common evolutionary history that drives native host–parasite networks, we hypothesised that 1) native networks have higher modularity than invaded ones; and 2) invasive hosts in the invaded area play a peripheral role to structure parasite communities. We analysed the whole parasite community and subsets based on transmission strategy and host specificity of the parasite species to establish whether modularity and host roles are related to these features in the native and invaded areas. All networks were found to be modular. However, modularity tended to be higher in networks of the native area rather than those of the invaded area. Host individuals of both fish species played similar roles in the native area, whereas invasive hosts played a peripheral role in the networks of the invaded area. We propose that long-term monitoring of the roles of invasive hosts in parasite communities can be a useful proxy for estimating the maturity of the establishment of the invasive hosts in an ecosystem. 相似文献

The role of the aged in human society has received much attention from gerontologists, and the notion of a social role for
aged monkeys is common in primatology. Four hundred and fifty hours of focal animal data were collected on a sample of 40
adult female Japanese monkeys. The animals are semi-free ranging and of known age. These data were analyzed in an attempt
to determine whether old females constitute a behaviorally distinct subgroup. Very little behavioral variation based on age
could be documented. Where age related variation occurs, it is better explained as a function of youth, rather than as a function
of old age. The expectation that old monkeys will occupy a distinct social role because of their advanced age is discussed
in terms of biological versus social aging, human versus non human aging, the evolution of behavioral change in old age, and
the application of the social role concept to old female monkeys. It is concluded that there is little evidence that the behavior
of the aged females differs significantly from that of the other adult females, and it does not appear that the fact of biological
aging creates any radically different social situation which would cue the onset of specific role behavior for aged animals. 相似文献

The Southeast Asian box turtle (Cuora amboinensis) is numerically the most important turtle exported from Indonesia. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, this turtle is heavily harvested and exported for food and traditional medicine in China and for the pet trade primarily in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Despite its significance in global markets, relatively little is known about the species’ ecology or importance to ecosystems. We conducted our research in a national park in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and our objectives were to quantify trophic breadth, capacity for seed dispersal between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and whether ingestion of seeds by C. amboinensis enhances germination. We obtained diet samples from 200 individual turtles and found that the species is omnivorous, exhibiting an ontogenetic shift from more carnivorous to more omnivorous. Both subadults and adults scavenged on other vertebrates. In a seed passage experiment, turtles passed seeds for 2?9 days after ingestion. Radio‐tracked turtles moved, on average, about 35 m per day, indicating that seeds from ingested fruits, given seed passage durations, could be dispersed 70?313 m from the parent tree and potentially between wetland and upland ecosystems. In a seed germination experiment, we found that ingestion of seeds by turtles enhanced germination, as compared with control seeds, for four of six plant species tested. Of these, two are common in the national park, making up a significant proportion of plant biomass in lowland swamp forest and around ephemeral pools in savanna, and are highly valued outside of the park for their lumber for construction of houses, furniture, and boats. Protection of C. amboinensis populations may be important for maintaining trophic linkages that benefit biodiversity, communities, and local economies. 相似文献

Androphilia refers to sexual attraction and arousal to adult males, whereas gynephilia refers to sexual attraction and arousal to adult females. In Independent Samoa, androphilic males, most of whom are effeminate
or transgendered, are referred to as fa’afafine, which means “in the manner of a woman.” Previous research has established that fa’afafine report significantly higher avuncular
tendencies relative to gynephilic men. We hypothesized that Samoan fa’afafine might adopt feminine gender role orientations
with respect to childcare activity. If so, then the fa’afafine’s femininity might be a proximate mechanism for promoting their
elevated avuncular tendencies. Our analyses indicated that fa’afafine had significantly higher willingness to assist in the
childcare of nieces and nephews than childless women, mothers, or men, none of whom differed from each other on this measure.
Thus, femininity does not appear to explain the fa’afafine’s pattern of avuncular tendencies, nor the women’s pattern of materteral
(i.e., aunt-like) tendencies, relative to gynephilic men. We discuss how the fa’afafine “third” gender status might influence
the expression of their elevated avuncular tendencies.
