Abstract

Seed formation involves not only the embryo and endosperm development, but also the formation of a series of either ephemeral or non-ephemeral structures. In this article, we study several of those structures in Cytisus multiflorus and Cytisus striatus. The endosperm development is first nuclear and later cellular, except for the chalazal area, whose development is always nuclear. It generates, in the early developmental stages, a sac-like haustorium. As the seed develops, two structures seem to be closely related to nutrient mobilization to the embryo sac: on the one hand, a group of cells and a channel, located in the chalazal area and closely related between them and to the endosperm haustorium, which could be interpreted as a hypostase and on the other hand, an endothelium, derived from the inner integument, which later degenerates leaving no trace in the mature seed. All of these structures would be associated with the directionality of assimilates from ovule tissues to embryo sac. In mature seed and surrounding the embryo appears a unicellular layer of cells rich in proteins (aleurone layer), which is the origin of the outermost layer of the cellular endosperm. The seed coat is made up only of the outer integument.  相似文献

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) occurs in the eucalypt forests of eastern and southern Australia and is currently threatened by habitat fragmentation, climate change, sexually transmitted diseases, and low genetic variability throughout most of its range. Using data collected during the Great Koala Count (a 1-day citizen science project in the state of South Australia), we developed generalized linear mixed-effects models to predict habitat suitability across South Australia accounting for potential errors associated with the dataset. We derived spatial environmental predictors for vegetation (based on dominant species of Eucalyptus or other vegetation), topographic water features, rain, elevation, and temperature range. We also included predictors accounting for human disturbance based on transport infrastructure (sealed and unsealed roads). We generated random pseudo-absences to account for the high prevalence bias typical of citizen-collected data. We accounted for biased sampling effort along sealed and unsealed roads by including an offset for distance to transport infrastructures. The model with the highest statistical support (wAICc ∼ 1) included all variables except rain, which was highly correlated with elevation. The same model also explained the highest deviance (61.6%), resulted in high R2(m) (76.4) and R2(c) (81.0), and had a good performance according to Cohen''s κ (0.46). Cross-validation error was low (∼ 0.1). Temperature range, elevation, and rain were the best predictors of koala occurrence. Our models predict high habitat suitability in Kangaroo Island, along the Mount Lofty Ranges, and at the tips of the Eyre, Yorke and Fleurieu Peninsulas. In the highest-density region (5576 km2) of the Adelaide–Mount Lofty Ranges, a density–suitability relationship predicts a population of 113,704 (95% confidence interval: 27,685–199,723; average density = 5.0–35.8 km−2). We demonstrate the power of citizen science data for predicting species'' distributions provided that the statistical approaches applied account for some uncertainties and potential biases. A future improvement to citizen science surveys to provide better data on search effort is that smartphone apps could be activated at the start of the search. The results of our models provide preliminary ranges of habitat suitability and population size for a species for which previous data have been difficult or impossible to gather otherwise.  相似文献

Development of a pseudocapacitor over the integration of metal oxide on carbonaceous materials is a promising step towards energy storage devices with high energy and power densities. Here, a self‐assembled cobalt oxide (CoO) nanorod cluster on three‐dimensional graphene (CoO‐3DG) is synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method followed by heat treatment. As an additive‐free electrode, CoO‐3DG exhibits good electrochemical performance. Compared with CoO nanorod clusters grown on Ni foam (i.e., CoO‐Ni, ≈680 F g?1 at 1 A g?1 and ≈400 F g?1 at 20 A g?1), CoO‐3DG achieves much higher capacitance (i.e., ≈980 F g?1 at 1 A g?1 and ≈600 F g?1 at 20 A g?1) with excellent cycling stability of 103% retention of specific capacitance after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, it shows an interesting activation process and instability with a redox reaction for CoO. In addition, the phase transformation from CoO nanorods to Co3O4 nanostructures was observed and investigated after charge and discharge process, which suggests the activation kinetics and the phase transformable nature of CoO based nanostructure. These observations demonstrate phase transformation with morphological change induced capacitance increasement in the emergent class of metal oxide materials for electrochemical energy storage device.  相似文献

Abstract

Mitochondria are considered to play an important role in oxidative stress response since they are a source of reactive oxygen species and are also targeted by these species. This study examined the mitochondrial conditions in cells of epithelial origin that were exposed to H2O2 and found a decline in the membrane potential along with a specific loss of UQCRC1, a sub-unit of complex III, suggesting that mitochondrial dysfunction occurs upon exposure to oxidative stress. This observation led to the hypothesis that certain cellular responses to oxidative stress occurred because of mitochondrial dysfunction. When mitochondria-less (pseudo ρ0) cells were examined as a model of mitochondrial dysfunction, striking similarities were found in their cellular responses compared with those found in cells exposed to oxidative stress, including changes in gene expression and gelatinolytic enzyme activities, thus suggesting that cellular responses to oxidative stress were partly mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction. This possibility was further validated by microarray analysis, which suggested that almost one-fourth of the cellular responses to oxidative stress were mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction that accompanies oxidative stress, thereby warranting a therapeutic strategy that targets mitochondria for the treatment of oxidative stress-associated diseases.  相似文献

The absence of a controllable in vitro model of soft tissue remodeling is a major impediment, limiting our understanding of collagen pathologies, tissue repair and engineering. Using 3D fibroblast-collagen lattice model, we have quantified changes in matrix tension and material properties following remodeling by blockade of cell-generated tension with cytochalasin D. This demonstrated a time-dependent shortening of the collagen network, progressively stabilized into a built-in tension within the matrix. This was differentially enhanced by TGFB1 and mechanical loading to give subtle control of the new, remodeled matrix material properties. Through this model, we have been able to identify the 'tension remodeling' process, by which cells control material properties in response to environmental factors.  相似文献

Glutamate-5-kinase (G5K) catalyzes the controlling first step of proline biosynthesis. Substrate binding, catalysis and feed-back inhibition by proline are functions of the N-terminal approximately 260-residue domain of G5K. We study here the impact on these functions of 14 site-directed mutations affecting 9 residues of Escherichia coli G5K, chosen on the basis of the structure of the bisubstrate complex of the homologous enzyme acetylglutamate kinase (NAGK). The results support the predicted roles of K10, K217 and T169 in catalysis and ATP binding and of D150 in orienting the catalytic lysines. They support the implication of D148 and D150 in glutamate binding and of D148 and N149 in proline binding. Proline increases the S(0.5) for glutamate and appears to bind at a site overlapping with the site for glutamate. We conclude that G5K and NAGK closely resemble each other concerning substrate binding and catalysis, but that they have different mechanisms of feed-back control.  相似文献
