The impact of two constant non-toxic levels of Al stress (0.2 and 0.4 mM) on growth and 32P uptake capacity on sub-optimal (P-limited) Betula pendula seedlings grown in sand culture was examined.Seedling growth was under optimum controlled conditions in a growth chamber where nutrient additions were made at a predetermined relative addition rate (RA) of 10% day-1. Three treatment groups of seedlings 0, 0.2 and 0.4 mM Al were harvested at 15, 29 and 42 days. The excised roots were exposed to a 32P-labelled solution for 15 minutes to measure their capacity for P uptake. Growth was determined by weighing the roots, stems and leaves of the seedlings.Growth data showed that relative growth rate (RG) should equal the RA of P the most limiting nutrient, which was supplied at P/N 3% instead of an optimal 15%. Therefore, Ingestad's theory can also be used succesfully in sand culture and this may be particularly important for future studies of root and rhizosphere exudates. Low levels of Al (< 0.2 mM) in combination with low P supply significantly lowered the RG of the birch seedlings by further reducing P supply. However, previous studies of birch seedling growth and nutrient uptake using Ingestad's solution culture technique with optimumal P supply did not show any effect of Al on growth untill the Al was in excess of 3 mM. Aluminium was not directly toxic to the plants and therefore roots could respond to the 32P bioassay.  相似文献

Interference with -lactam production inStreptomyces clavuligerus by ammonium and phosphate ions, normally observed with optimum levels of aeration, was eliminated by restriction of the air supply. Under such a restriction, ammonium slightly stimulated and phosphate markedly stimulated -lactam antibiotic production. The Great Ouse estuary in southern England is a macrotidal estuary with rather coarse sediment. Two intertidal sites were sampled five times over the year at low tide. The sediments are suboxic, organic poor (approximately 1.5% organic carbon). They are composed mainly of detrital quartz and feldspar with some calcite. At both sites the total phosphorus in the sediments ranges from 0.03 – 0.12% dry weight and total iron from 0.42–1.22% dry weight. Of the total phosphorus 20% is organic and 80% is inorganic of which 10% is water extractable. Total iron and phosphorus correlate well and the ratio of iron:phosphorus is 8.4 which is similar to that found when phosphorus is adsorbed by iron oxyhydroxides, suggesting that iron oxyhydroxides are an important substrate for phosphorus sorption in these sediments. Fluxes of phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water, measured in cores incubated in the laboratory, are low and show no seasonality. The sodium concentration in the porewaters at both sites is variable suggesting that there is movement of water through the sediment to depths of at least 20 cm. This is borne out by variable phosphorus, iron and phosphorus concentrations in the porewaters and ill defined redox zones in the sediments.  相似文献

The benthic microbial response to the deposition of naturalseston and the microbial impact on nutrient dynamics wasstudied in an experimental system using whole sediment coresequipped with flow-through systems for the overlying water. For20 days, changes in sediment bacterial activity, totalmetabolic activity (heat production), bacterial biomass,phosphorus fractions and basic chemistry were followed, as wellas the exchange of nutrients between sediment and water.Microbial activity and biomass increased immediately inresponse to the deposition of seston, peaked after seven daysand then decreased linearly over the remaining time of theexperiment. Co-settled bacteria were suggested to play animportant role in the microbial response. Changes in bacterialbiomass production, bacterial biomass and the NaOH-nrPextractable phosphorus fraction were concurrent in response toseston additions. The sediment acted as a trap for SRP from theoverlying water when bacterial activity was high and as asource when the bacterial activity decreased. Altogether, theresults suggest an important role of bacteria in theregeneration of seston P. Mineralization rates estimated fromsediment heat production showed that ca. 11% of the addedseston carbon was oxidized in the sediments during theexperiment. Foliar phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations and nutrient resorption in the forest understory shrub Lonicera maackii (Rupr.) Maxim (Caprifoliaceae) were measured along contiguous topographic gradients in two southwestern Ohio forests during 1992–1994. Mean summer foliar P varied significantly among topographic positions (but not sites or years), with uplands having greatest P concentrations and bottomlands exhibiting the lowest. Unlike for P, the mean summer foliar N concentrations varied little among sites, topographic positions, and years. Mean absolute and proportional P resorption ranged from 0.48 mg/dm2 (33.7%) in slope positions to 0.80 mg/dm2 (53.1%) in bottomland positions. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) for P resorption indicated significant topographic and year effects, a site × year and a site × year × topographic interaction. Mean absolute and proportional foliar N resorption ranged from 6.82 mg/dm2 (30.7%) in bottomlands to 8.41 mg/dm2 (37.3%) in slope positions. RMANOVA indicated a significant topographic effect for both absolute and proportional N resorption and a significant year effect for absolute N resorption. These significant year effects for P and N stemmed from lowest resorption of nutrients in 1993. The results for P resorption support the hypothesis that foliar resorption is greater in forested sites with lower P fertility. However, resorption rates for N did not support the hypothesis clearly, as slopes with intermediate N availability had greater N resorption rates than did N-rich bottomlands.  相似文献

Akinetes of a clonal culture of Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst from Mt. Bold reservoir (eutrophic), South Australia, were isolated and the effects of light, phosphorus, and nitrogen availability on their germination were investigated. Light was required but there was no significant difference in percentage of germination after 72 h if akinetes were incubated in ASM-1 medium at irradiances of 15, 30, or 50 μmol.m-2.s-1. Maximum akinete germination occurred by 48 h. Nitrogen was not required, as 88% of akinetes germinated in the flasks without combined nitrogen added to the medium and without N2 in the air. NH4+-N at 28 mg N.L-1 completely suppressed germination, whereas 28 mg NO3 N.L-1 had no effect relative to the controls without nitrogen. Phosphorus was required, and at 48 h percentage of germination in the flasks with 0.6 mg P.L-1 added (78%) was significantly greater than in the flasks with 0.06 P.L-1 (58%) and 0 mgP.L-1 (24%) added. Germlings in the 0 mg P.L-1 flasks were only 2–4 cells long and stunted in appearance, whereas germlings at all other P concentrations were 8–16 cells long. It is likely that the isolation process exposed some akinetes to intracellular phosphorus released from lysing vegetative cells, but this was insufficient to allow normal development in the 0 mg P.L-1 flasks. The plot of percentage of germination vs. initial phosphorus concentration, in the medium showed a relationship analogous to Michaelis-Menten nutrient uptake kinetics, suggesting that a specific membrane-bound enzyme system(s) is involved, with phosphorus as the substrate. The effect of iron deficiency, phosphorus, NaHCO3, chelator supply and nitrogen source on the formation of cluster (proteoid) roots was investigated in Casuarina glauca growing in water culture. The addition of iron-binding chelators (e.g. EDDHA, DTPA, EDTA) or increase in nutrient solution pH with NaHCO3 resulted in the formation of cluster roots when plants were grown in solution lacking iron. Phosphorus supply even at a concentration of 500 µM did not inhibit cluster root formation if EDDHA was added to the iron-deficient medium. Cluster root formation was influenced significantly by nitrogen source and occurred only in nitrate-fed plants.C. glauca seemed to be very sensitive to iron deficiency as shown by plant chlorosis when grown on alkaline soil. The symptoms of chlorosis decreased as the chlorophyll content in shoots and the number of cluster roots increased, suggesting that the alleviation of iron deficiency in plant tissues was correlated with cluster root formation. It appears that iron deficiency is more important than phosphorus deficiency in inducing the formation of cluster roots in C. glauca.  相似文献

The effects of the interaction between the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae and the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita on growth and nutrition of micropropagated ;Grand Naine banana (Musa AAA) cultivar was studied under greenhouse conditions. Inoculation with two G. mosseae isolates significantly increased growth of plants in relation to non-mycorrhizal plants. Response to mycorrhizae was as effective as with an optimum P fertilization in promoting plant development for most growth parameters. Meloidogyne incognita had no apparent effect on the percentage of root colonization in mycorrhizal plants. In contrast, G. mosseae suppressed root galling and nematode buildup in the roots. The percentage of mycorrhizal colonization was high (over 80%) in low P fertilized plants, but optimum P rates for bananas (four times higher than low P) significantly reduced mycorrhizal colonization. Most elements were within sufficiency levels for banana with exception of N which was low for all treatments. Mycorrhizal plants fertilized with a low P rate showed higher N, P, K, Ca, and Mg contents as compared to non-mycorrhizal plants low in P with or without the nematode. Inoculation with G. mosseae favours growth of banana plants by enhancing plant nutrition and by suppressing nematode reproduction and galling during the early stages of plant development.  相似文献
