Summary We present compositional statistics, a new method of phylogenetic inference, which is an extension of evolutionary parsimony. Compositional statistics takes account of the base composition of the compared sequences by using nucleotide positions that evolutionary parsimony ignores. It shares with evolutionary parsimony the features of rate invariance and the fundamental distinction between transitions and transversions. Of the presently available methods of phylogenetic inference, compositional statistics is based on the fewest and mildest assumptions about the mode of DNA sequence evolution. It is therefore applicable to phylogenetic studies of the most distantly related organisms or molecules. This was illustrated by analyzing conservative positions in the DNA sequences of the large subunit of RNA polymerase from three archaebacterial groups, a eubacterium, a chloroplast, and the three eukaryotic polymerases. Internally consistent results, which are in accord with our knowledge of organelle origin and archaebacterial physiology, were achieved. 相似文献

Summary A few years ago we presented a stationary Markov model of gene evolution according to which only homologous genes from not
too divergent species obeying the condition of being stationary may behave as reliable molecular clocks. A compartmentalized
model of the nuclear genome in which the genes are distributed in compartments, the isochores, defined by their G+C content
has been proposed recently. We have found that only homologous gene pairs that are stationary, and belong to the same isochore,
can be used consistently for the determination of phylogeny and base substitution rate. In particular, for the rodent-human
couple, only about half of the homologous gene pairs are stationary. Stationary genes evolve at the third silent codon position
with the same velocity independent of the genes and base composition. By contrast, nonstationary genes display apparent rate
values (pseudovelocities) that are significantly higher. Our results cast doubt upon recent claims of a large acceleration

Abstract A saltern near La Baule (Bretagne, France) was remodeled in a programmable temperature and humidity controlled walk-in environmental chamber resembling the characteristics of the original saltern. The saltern showed different types of microbial mats predominantly composed of algae, oxy- and anoxyphotobacteria, and associated chemoorganotrophic bacteria, fungi and animals. Well-developed microbial mats were found up to a salinity of 10% during the three or four months in summer when salinity gradients and NaCl precipitation were established. The main phototrophic organisms were diatoms, the cyanobacteria Aphanothece, Microcoleus, Spirulina , and Oscillatoria , and Chromatiaceae. At higher salinity, Halobacterium sp., diatoms, and Dunaliella were dominant. Typical microbial mats and saltern-typical invertebrate, algal and bacterial species also developed in the saltern model, building up a stable community. The ionic composition of the brines and physicochemical parameters were similar to those determined for the original saltern. Different photosynthetic organisms, e.g. a filamentous purple bacterium and a hypersaline Chloroflexus -like organism, could be enriched within the microbial mats by changing the light regime. 相似文献

野菰(Zizania latifolia)是湖北省洪湖中优势水生维管束植物,其群落占全湖355平方公里面积的127平方公里。茎和叶的年生物量为4379克鲜重/平方米,全湖总年产量121700吨干重,目前未被利用。野菰各器官的蛋白质和氨基酸含量分别以百分干重表示:根,7.0和4.76;根状茎,11.3和8.85;茎,9.5和7.15;嫩茎梢,22.4和16.53;叶,16.8和14.61。500克干叶的必需氨基酸含量接近100克干重草鱼幼鱼背肌的必需氨基酸含量。脂肪:叶中3.4~4.2,茎中2.2;粗纤维:叶中26.8~28,茎中24.2;灰分:叶中10.0,茎中5.8。菰茎含可溶性糖类30%以上,其中葡萄糖,果糖、蔗糖和麦芽糖是主要成分。结果表明野菰是一种优质饲料。 相似文献

Elemental composition and feeding rate of hydromedusae Phialidium sp. on copepods were studied in the laboratory. Regression equations for both mature and immature medusae allowed the estimation of their dry weight (DW), total C and N content as a function of their diameter. The mean C content as percentage of the DW varied from 13.13% (
) for the immature to 19.38% (5.68) for the mature individuals. The mean N content is 4.03% (2.49) of DW of immatures and 5.85% (2.70) of the matures. Ingestion rate of Phialidium sp. fed on copepods (200–500 μm) increased with prey density but reached a maximum at high prey concentrations. A maximum ingestion rate of 8.55 (1.6) copepods · medusa −1 · h−1 was reached for prey concentrations of > 140 copepods · 1 −1 for both immature and mature medusae. Maximum daily consumption of prey weight varied from 1.41 to 978% C body weight for mature medusae and from 2.90 to 975% for the immature individuals. 相似文献

The effects of supplied ammonium and nitrate on the amino and organic acid contents and enzyme activities of cell suspension cultures of Acer pseudoplatanus L. were examined. Regardless of nitrogen source the pH of the culture medium strongly affected the malate and citrate contents of the cells; these organic acid pools declined at pH 5, but increased at pH 7 and 8. Over a period of two days, ammonium had little effect on the responses of the organic acid pool sizes to the pH of the medium. In contrast, ammonium had a strong influence on amino acid pool sizes, and this effect was dependent on the pH of the medium. At pH 5 there was no increase in cell ammonium or amino acid contents, but at higher pH values cellular ammonium content rose, accompanied by accumulation of glutamine, glutamate and asparagine. Over several days, supplied ammonium led to an increase in activity of glutamate dehydrogenase irrespective of any changes in internal ammonium and amino acid contents. If the pH of the medium was allowed to fall below pH 4 in the presence of ammonium, phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase activity declined to a very low value over several days; at higher pH, the activity of this enzyme, and that of NAD malic enzyme and NAD malate dehydrogenase, remained substantial irrespective of whether the nitrogen source was NH+ 4 or NO-3 . 相似文献

The formation of mor humus in an experimental grassland plot, which has been acidified by long-term fertiliser treatment,
has been studied by comparing the rates of cellulose, soil organic matter and plant litter decay with those in an adjacent
plot with near-neutral pH and mull humus. The decomposition of cellulose filter paper in litter bags of 5 mm, 1-mm and 45-μm
mesh size buried at 3 to 4 cm depth the plots was followed by measuring the weight loss and changes in glucose content over
a 6 month period. Soil pH was either 5.3 or 4.3. Decomposition of native soil organic matter and plant litter in soil from
the same plots were followed using CO2 evolution in laboratory microcosms. Cellulose weight loss at pH 5.3 was greatest from the 5-mm mesh bags and least from the
45-um mesh bags. At pH 4.3 there was little weight loss from bags and no significant differences in weight loss between bags
with different sized mesh. There was, however, a reduction in the glucose content of the hydrolysed and derivatised filter
paper with time. The decomposition rate of native soil organic matter in the low pH soil was increased to that observed in
the less acid soil when the pH of the former was increased from 4.3 to 5.3. The increase in decomposition rate of added plant
litter in the more acid soil as a result of CA(OH)2 addition was only 60% of that observed in the soil with pH 5.3. These data support the hypothesis that the absence of soil
animals and the restricted microbial decomposition in the acidic soil was responsible for mor humus formation. 相似文献

Summary The anastomosing ER system of epidermal cells of onion bulb scales is composed of three modifications: lamellar and tubular elements, located in the cell periphery, and long tubular stands located deeper in the cytoplasm. Cytoplasmic acidification of epidermal cells by loading with weak organic acids like acetic or propionic acid causes the decay of the lamellar elements and the disappearance of long tubular strands. Organelle movement is also inhibited. The effects depend on the pH of the incubation medium and on the administered acid concentration, and are characterized by a distinct lag phase of about 7 min. The induced ER changes are transient with adaptation starting after about 50min. Buffer components alone have little influence on the cellular ER organization within a pH-range of 4.0–8.0. However, the pH of the medium strongly affects the time course of the effects as well as recovery after omitting the administered acid. Both modulation and recovery occur more rapidly at neutral or slightly alkaline pH. The loading of amino acids and nitrate into the xylem was investigated by collection and analysis of root-pressure exudate from the cut hypocotyl stumps of seedlings of Ricinus communis L. Glutamine was found to be the dominant amino acid in the exudate and also to be the amino acid which is transferred to the xylem most rapidly and accumulated to the greatest extent. The comparison between uptake and xylem loading showed significant differences in specificity between these two transport reactions, indicating a different set of transport systems. Nitrate is transferred to the xylem at a higher relative rate than any amino acid despite the great nitrate-storage capacity of the root system. Thus the supply of nitrate to Ricinus plants leads to enhanced nitrogen allocation to the shoots. 相似文献
