Instantaneous sampling of eight behavior categories for a captive mother sea otter (Enhydra lutris) and her four pups was conducted continuously during the first three months following each pup's birth. Initially, pup-grooming and rest occupied the largest proportion of the mother's time. Despite a steady decline in the amount of time the mother spent pup-grooming, the mother continued to groom the pup a substantial amount of time three months after the pup's birth. The proportion of time the mother spent resting, self-grooming, or swimming did not change significantly over the study period, suggesting that these behaviors are important to the mother's self-maintenance. The newborn pups' behaviors were initially limited to rest, active, and nursing, with large proportions of time spent resting and nursing. A significant increase in self-grooming occurred regularly by week 2, followed by increases in swimming (week 3), diving (week 6), and feeding (week 7). Three months after birth, the pups' behavior budgets were similar to their mother, with the exception that pups self-groomed substantially less than their mother self-groomed. The lower proportion of pup self-grooming may be due to the continued close proximity to their mother in captivity, which afforded extended association, and allowed the mother to continue to perform this complex behavior for the pup. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The majority of terrestrial primary production is performed by plants, the ontogenetic growth trends of which significantly influence biomass and carbon dynamics. Here, we present a study of ontogenetic trends in primary (apical) and secondary (stem thickening) growth of plants in Arctic (Svalbard, Norway) and alpine (Krkonoše, Czechia) populations of the black crowberry (Empetrum nigrum), the dominant plant species of certain tundra communities. The environmental conditions in alpine areas are more favourable for plant growth than those in the High Arctic, where temperatures are lower, there is less precipitation and soils are shallower, among other differences. These differences were clearly reflected in significant distinctions in absolute growth rates and shrub age between the populations under study. However, we found almost no divergence in ontogenetic growth trends between the populations (based on ring width measurements made from the base to the top of plants, known as serial sectioning). In both populations, primary and secondary stem base growth decrease over the course of ontogeny whereas secondary stem top growth and basal area increment increase. No significant differences in the slope of the trends were found in either primary or secondary stem base growth. Trends of the growth ratio between basal area increment and primary growth revealed neither absolute nor relative differences between the populations. Ontogenetic trends in the shrubs analysed were surprisingly stable despite the prominently dissimilar environmental conditions. Empetrum plants have adapted to the different environments by altering their absolute growth rate only. This adaptation has probably also resulted in the different longevity of plants constituting the study populations, confirming the theory that slower-growing plants live longer. Primary growth and secondary stem base growth seem to be more basic characteristics of plant growth compared to basal area increment and secondary growth at the apex because the latter two seem to be dependent on the absolute growth rate. 相似文献

An intramembranous ossification at the anterior end of the cartilaginous nasal capsule is described for the first time in prenatal specimens of the anteaterTamandua and the slothCholoepus and redescribed in prenatal specimens of the armadillosDasypus andZaedyus. The ontogeny of cell adhesion molecule L1 in cerebellum was quantitatively assessed in weaver and reeler mutant mice and in heterozygous litter-mate controls. In the latter the concentration and the amount of L1 both increased from the first postnatal week to become maximum at the second. In contrast, in the weaver and reeler neurologic mutant mice, L1 decreased steadily. The L1 concentration and the amount of L1 was lower in the cerebellum of homozygous mutant mice than in litter-mate controls. Reproduction of slow loris maintained in in- and outdoor enclosures in the natural day-night-cycle of southern Germany seems
to be seasonally dependant. Mating occurs during summer, delivery of offspring during winter. Gestation length as determined
from mid-estrus was 186–187 days. Copulation takes place over two to five consecutive days during estrus. Litter size for
each of the recorded births was one. Lactation lasts for five to seven months. Sexual maturity is reached at about 1 1/2 to
2 years. Physical growth and the first appearance of main locomotor, behavioral and vocal patterns are described until nutritive
weaning. With regard to acoustic structures, the vocal repertoire of newborn slow loris is quite similar to that of adults.
During ontogeny main changes are discerned in the temporal pattern and pitch frequency of vocalizations and in their use.

Although habitat selection has been studied in a variety of snake taxa, little is known about habitat selection in aquatic snake species. Additionally, due to their small size and secretive nature, juvenile snakes are seldom included in habitat selection studies. The Eastern cottonmouth Agkistrodon piscivorus is a semi-aquatic pit viper known to use ambush, sit-and-wait foraging strategies. Ambush hunters are likely to select habitats that increase opportunity for successful prey capture while minimizing predation risk and maintaining appropriate thermal and hydric conditions. We characterized the foraging strategy and microhabitat use of cottonmouths at Ellenton Bay, an isolated Carolina bay freshwater wetland on the Savannah River Site in SC, USA. We measured habitat characteristics of 55 ambush sites used by 51 individual cottonmouths located during nighttime visual surveys, as well as 225 randomly selected sites within our search area. Cottonmouths exhibited an ontogenetic shift in foraging strategy with juveniles using predominately ambush foraging around the edge of the wetland while adults were most often encountered actively moving within the wetland. Principal components analysis revealed that juveniles selected foraging microhabitats that were different from random and consisted of mud substrate with sparse vegetation, whereas adults occupied a greater variety of microhabitats that did not differ from random. Concomitantly, free-ranging cottonmouths exhibited ontogenetic shifts in diet: juveniles consumed mostly salamanders, while adults ate a greater variety of prey including other snakes and birds. Our results highlight the importance of understanding how ontogenetic changes in coloration, diet and predation risk influence foraging strategy and microhabitat selection in snakes. 相似文献
