Functional and structural patterns in the pharyngeal jaw apparatus of euteleostean fishes are described and analysed as a case study of the transformation of a complex biological design. The sequential acquisition of structural novelties in the pharyngeal apparatus is considered in relation to both current hypotheses of euteleostean phylogeny and patterns of pharyngeal jaw function. Several euteleostean clades are corroborated as being monophyletic, and morphologically conservative features of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus are recognized. Functional analysis, using cinematography and electromyography, reveals four distinct patterns of muscle activity during feeding in primitive euteleosts (Esox) and in derived euteleostean fishes(Perca, Micropterus, Ambloplites, Pomoxis). The initial strike, buccal manipulation, pharyngeal manipulation, and the pharyngeal transport of prey into the oesophagus all involve unique muscle activity patterns that must be distinguished in analyses of pharyngeal jaw function. During pharyngeal transport, the upper and lower pharyngeal jaws are simultaneously protracted and retracted by the action of dorsal and ventral musculoskeletal gill arch couplings. The levator externus four and retractor dorsalis muscles, anatomical antagonists, overlap for 70–90°of their activity period. Levatores externi one and two are the main protractors of the upper pharyngeal jaws in the acanthopterygian fishes studied. The major features of pharyngeal jaw movement in primitive euteleosts are retained in many derived clades in spite of a dramatic structural reorganization of the pharyngeal region. Homologous muscles have radically changed their relative activity periods while pharyngeal jaw kinematics have been modified relatively little. Patterns of transformation of activity may thus bear little direct relationship to the sequence of structural modification in the evolution of complex designs. Overall function of a structural system may be maintained, however, through co-ordinated modifications of the timing of muscle activity and anatomical reorientation of the musculoskeletal system. Deeper understanding of the principles underlying the origin and transformation of functional design in vertebrates awaits further information on the acquisition of both structural and functional novelties at successive hierarchical levels within monophyietic clades. This is suggested as a key goal of future research in functional and evolutionary morphology.  相似文献

Modification of serially homologous structures is a common avenue towards functional innovation in developmental evolution, yet ancestral affinities among serial homologues may be obscured as structure-specific modifications accumulate over time. We sought to assess the degree of homology to wings of three types of body wall projections commonly observed in scarab beetles: (i) the dorsomedial support structures found on the second and third thoracic segments of pupae, (ii) the abdominal support structures found bilaterally in most abdominal segments of pupae, and (iii) the prothoracic horns which depending on species and sex may be restricted to pupae or also found in adults. We functionally investigated 14 genes within, as well as two genes outside, the canonical wing gene regulatory network to compare and contrast their role in the formation of each of the three presumed wing serial homologues. We found 11 of 14 wing genes to be functionally required for the proper formation of lateral and dorsal support structures, respectively, and nine for the formation of prothoracic horns. At the same time, we document multiple instances of divergence in gene function across our focal structures. Collectively, our results support the hypothesis that dorsal and lateral support structures as well as prothoracic horns share a developmental origin with insect wings. Our findings suggest that the morphological and underlying gene regulatory diversification of wing serial homologues across species, life stages and segments has contributed significantly to the extraordinary diversity of arthropod appendages and outgrowths.  相似文献

To robustly study zoo animal cognition and provide effective enrichment, we must provide animals with carefully designed apparatus made from appropriate (safe, attractive, practical) materials. However, all too often, this design phase is overlooked or omitted from the literature. We evaluated how a troop of 12 ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) explored a range of novel materials and whole foods during outdoor social testing. These items were not intended to test cognition or be enriching; rather we viewed them as the potential “building blocks” from which to build our future apparatus. Lemurs preferred to explore wooden surfaces, but had no preference for manipulanda made from different materials. Large amounts of metal and untreated wood should be avoided in the future; metal produced too much heat and glare, and wood was damaged by biting/chewing. Lemurs used one or two hands to explore manipulanda, and simple touching was more common than twisting or pulling. However, lemurs were most likely to explore by smell than touch or by mouth. Social testing preserved “normal” conditions for the lemurs, including natural food stealing and scrounging in high- and low-ranking individuals, respectively. Our findings culminated in the development of a static, low-level cognitive task apparatus, constructed from modular plastic units. We encourage other researchers to report how they develop cognitive and enrichment apparatuses and consider a similar preference-testing approach.  相似文献

The influences of cage size and novelty on the behavior of Galago senegalensis braccatus were examined in two captive groups (five adults and one immature per group) having similarly furnished but unequally sized cages. One group experienced expansion, and the other experienced contraction of space. Each group experienced the novelty of a new cage and return to its old cage. Exploration, nonsocial activity, and social sniffing behaviors were most frequent in both groups during the novelty phase independent of cage size. These behaviors remained elevated after return to the original cage. This pattern indicated that novelty, not space, was responsible for these behavioral changes. The increase in social sniffing indicated that group members may use olfactory cues to recognize each other, expecially when the setting is novel. In both groups, frequencies of displacements and chases were highest in the smaller space. Group differences in behavior prior to cage change also influenced a group's response to change.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the preference for a palatable high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with response to novelty and with anxiety-like behavior in rats and whether such fat preference correlates with gene expression of hypothalamic neuropeptides related to feeding. We subjected male rats to two tests of exploration of novel environments: the multivariate concentric square field (MCSF) and the elevated plus maze (EPM). The rats were then exposed to a 5 - day test of preference for a palatable HFD versus reference diets. Messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of 21 neuropeptides were investigated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We found a strong positive correlation of HFD preference and open-arm activity in the EPM (% open-arm time, r s = 0.629, df = 26, P   <   0.001). Thus, HFD preference was inversely associated with anxiety-like behavior. The same association was found for HFD preference and behavior in the MCSF (bridge entries, r s = 0.399, df = 23, P  = 0.048). In addition, the HFD preference was positively correlated ( r s = 0.433, df = 25, P  = 0.021) with hypothalamic mRNA levels of urocortin 2 (Ucn 2). Moreover, behavior in the EPM was significantly correlated with expression levels of the receptor for Ucn 2, the corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 2, in the hypothalamus ( r s = 0.382, df = 33, P  = 0.022, pituitary ( r s = 0.494, df = 31, P  = 0.004) and amygdala ( r s = 0.381, df = 30, P  = 0.032). We conclude that preference for palatable HFD is inversely associated with anxiety and propose that Ucn 2 signaling may play a role in this association.  相似文献
