Manifestations of aluminium (Al) toxicity in two cultivars of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cvs Kadett [relatively Al-resistant] and WW 20299 [relatively Al-sensitive]) were investigated at two root zone temperatures (RZT) that may occur in the field. The plants were grown for 9 days at 10 or 25°C RZT. Mineral nutrients other than CaSO4 were supplied daily in exponentially increasing amounts to meet the demand of the plants. Al was added as Al2 (SO4 )3 at the beginning of the culture period at concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 μ M . pH was kept constant at 4.1. Experimental data were analysed for interactions between Al and RZT on a fresh weight basis by the nonlinear Weibull function. Cultivar Kadett, when grown at 25°C RZT, was more resistant to Al than when grown at 10°C RZT. Cultivar WW 20299 was equally sensitive to Al at 10 and 25°C RZT but generally more sensitive to Al than cv. Kadett. It is suggested that cv. Kadett, in contrast to cv. WW 20299, possesses a mechanism for Al resistance that is less effective at 10°C than at 25°C RZT and therefore may be metabolically dependent. In roots, the concentrations of K, P, Mg and Ca were not negatively affected by Al or by RZT. In shoots of both cultivars the concentrations of Ca and Mg became comparatively low when the plants were treated with Al or at low RZT, the effect being larger for Ca than for Mg. At 10°C RZT under Al stress, the Ca concentrations in shoots approached the critical concentration where growth may be inhibited. As no Al was detected in the shoots, it is suggested that Al in the roots inhibits shoot growth by reducing transport of Ca from roots to shoots. 相似文献

The specific growth rate of the biomass, a very important parameter of almost every fermentation process, cannot be measured directly or estimated from related variables, as the concentrations of biomass, substrates, or products, due to the lack of reliable and cheap sensors. In this article a stable adaptive estimator of the specific growth rate is designed for those aerobic processes where the measurement of the oxygen uptake rate is available on-line. This particular approach can be applied also for other reaction rates if the model of the process satisfies some very general assumptions, which make the dynamics of the measured reaction rate a nonlinear function only of two unknown parameters, the specific growth rate and its time derivative. With respect to a previous similar approach, the new estimator has one additional parameter and a different nonlinear structure. From the analysis of the dynamics of the estimation error, a tuning criterion is derived, by which the two different algorithms can be compared under similar conditions. Summary The cochlea of the mustache bat, Pteronotus parnellii, is very sensitive and sharply tuned to the frequency range of the dominant second harmonic of the echolocation call around 61 kHz. About 900 Hz above this frequency the cochlear microphonic potential (CM) reaches its maximum amplitude and lowest threshold. At exactly the same frequency, pronounced evoked otoacoustic emissions (OAE) can be measured in the outer ear canal, indicating mechanical resonance. The CM amplitude maximum and the OAE are most severely masked by simultaneous exposure to tones within the range from about 61–62 kHz up to about 70 kHz. The data suggest that the mechanism of mechanical resonance involves cochlear loci basal to the 61 kHz position.The resonance contributes to auditory sensitivity and sharp tuning: At the frequency of the OAE, single unit responses in the cochlear nucleus have the lowest thresholds. Maximum tuning sharpness occurs at frequencies about 300 Hz below the OAE-frequency, where the threshold is about 10 dB less sensitive than at the OAE-frequency. In addition, in the frequency range around the OAE-frequency several specialized neuronal response features can be related to mechanical resonance: Long lasting excitation after the end of the stimulus, asymmetrical tuning curves with a shallow high frequency slope and phasic on-off neuronal response patterns. In particular the latter phenomenon indicates the occurrence of local mechanical cancellations in the cochlea.Abbreviations

Accurate estimation of joint loads implies using subject-specific musculoskeletal models. Moreover, as the lines of action of the muscles are dictated by the soft tissues, which are in turn influenced by gravitational forces, we developed a method to build subject-specific models of the lower limb in a functional standing position. Bones and skin envelope were obtained in a standing position, whereas muscles and a set of bony landmarks were obtained from conventional magnetic resonance images in a lying position. These muscles were merged with the subject-specific skeletal model using a nonlinear transformation, taking into account soft tissue movements and gravitational effects. Seven asymptomatic lower limbs were modelled using this method, and results showed realistic deformations. Comparing the subject-specific skeletal model to a scaled reference model rendered differences in terms of muscle length up to 4% and in terms of moment arm for adductor muscles up to 30%. These preliminary findings enlightened the importance of subject-specific modelling in a functional position. 相似文献

Bats rely heavily on acoustic signals in order to communicate with each other in a variety of social contexts. Among those, agonistic interactions and accompanying vocalizations have received comparatively little study. Here, we studied the communicational behaviour between male greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) during agonistic encounters. Two randomly paired adult males were placed in a box that allowed us to record video and sound synchronously. We describe their vocal repertoire and compare the acoustic structure of vocalizations between two aggression levels, which we quantified via the bats’ behaviour. By inspecting thirty, one-minute long encounters, we identified a rich variety of social calls that can be described as two basic call types: echolocation-like, low-frequency sweeps and long, broadband squawks. Squawks, the most common vocalization, were often noisy, i.e. exhibited a chaotic spectral structure. We further provide evidence for individual signatures and the presence of nonlinear phenomena in this species’ vocal repertoire. As the usage and acoustic structure of vocalizations is known to encode the internal state of the caller, we had predicted that the spectral structure of squawks would be affected by the caller’s aggression level. Confirming our hypothesis, we found that increased aggression positively correlated with an increase in call frequency and tonality. We hypothesize that the extreme spectral variability between and within squawks can be explained by small fluctuations in vocal control parameters (e.g. subglottal pressure) that are caused by the elevated arousal, which is in turn influenced by the aggression level. 相似文献
