Taxonomy of the genus Dianous (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Steninae) in China and zoogeographic patterns of its distribution

Abstract Ninety‐six species of the rove beetle genus Dianous Leach, 1819 have been recorded in China. In this paper, we describe a new species, D. poecilus n. sp. from Yunnan, and record D. viriditinctus ( Champion, 1920 ) for the first time from China. To facilitate identification of species, species groups and/or species complexes, we compiled a new version of keys, including all species of Dianous hitherto recorded in the territory of China. Moreover, main patterns of geographical distribution are outlined for the world Dianous fauna of this genus.     

新疆网衣属地衣中国新记录种（英文）

大量采集新疆各地网衣属（LecideaAch.）地衣标本,发现1个中国新记录种L.hypocrita,4个新疆新记录种L.berengeriana,L.confluens,L.lactea,L.lithophila。文中对这些新记录地衣进行了详细描述,并提供了反映地衣特征的彩色图片。     

20份新编目入国家烟草种质库的烤烟种质的鉴定和分析

为将20份新收集（引进）、选育的烤烟种质资源入国家种质库进行编目和保存,对各种质进行田间鉴定评价,结果表明,云烟317、云烟201、云烟202、云烟203、PVH09和RGH51等品种抗或中抗黑胫病、根结线虫病、青枯病、TMV等主要病害中的2种以上,产量适中、品质较好,已经全国烟草品种审定委员会审（认）定,其余种质资源在田间生长正常,白花大金元、江川地方种、大有种和人民六队-15黑胫病较重。田间试验获得了各种质的生育期、形态特征、主要农艺性状、经济性状、原烟外观质量、化学成分和主要病害等数据资料,拍摄了各种质的植株、叶片、花序、花冠和蒴果的照片,按规定上交合格种子并入库保存,获得的资料全部上交给中国农业科学院烟草研究所,用于中国烟草种质资源信息系统和共享平台建设,为丰富国家种质库以及今后持续利用种质资源奠定良好基础。     

Effect of modified meridic diet on the development and growth of tomato fruitworm Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The efficacy of one new modified and two old meridic diets on Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) for rearing six successive generations was studied. Duration of larval development for insects fed on the modified diet was considerably shortened as most of them went through only five stadia before pupation, while the per cent pupation and per cent eclosion were relatively higher than on other diets. The lowest pupal mortality (6.33 ± 0.13%) was recorded in the F₁ generation reared on the modified diet, whereas the highest pupal mortality (19.49 ± 0.15%) was observed in insects reared on a natural diet in the F₆ generation. Blending of chickpea Cicer arietinum L. and red kidney bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. flours with tomato paste proved highly favorable for adult reproduction. These results suggest that the vitality of the tomato fruitworm did not decline obviously after rearing on a modified diet for several generations.     

Four new species of the Australian Pamborus Latreille (Coleoptera, Carabidae) carabid beetles

Abstract  Based on an examination of the type specimens of all the known species of the genus Pamborus Latrielle (Coleoptera, Carabidae) four new Australian species are recognised and are described as: P. euopacus sp. n., P. moorei sp. n., P. monteithi sp. n and P. cooloolensis sp. n. In addition, Pamborus viridis Gory, P. opacus Géhin and P. subtropicus Darlington are also redescribed based on the type material and lectotypes are designated for the first two species.     

A NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS EUSTOCHUS HALIDAY (HYMENOPTERA: CHALCIDOIDEA: MYMARIDAE) IN CHINA

Abstract The genus Eustochus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Mymaridae) is briefly reviewed. A new species, Eustochus triclavatus is described and illustrated. This is the first record of the genus for China. All specimens examined are deposited in the Biological Control Research Institute, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Fuzhou, China.     

Key to Dohrniphora males (Diptera: Phoridae) of the Australasian and Oriental Regions with descriptions of new species

A key to males of the Australasian and Oriental species of Dohrniphora is provided. Twenty-five new species are described and two new synonyms proposed.     

TWO NEW SPECIES OF CYBOCEPHALIDAE (COLEOP-TERA) FROM NORTHWEST CHINA

Abstract  Two species of CybocePhalus Erichson (Coleoptera: Cybocephalidae), C. aksuensis from Xinjiang. and C. kuangi from Gansu, China, are described as new to science in this paper. The type specimens are preserved in the Insect Collections of South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China.     

Functional morphology and light-gathering ability of podocopid ostracod eyes and the palaeontological implications

The optical features of lateral ocelli of the eye were examined in 29 Recent species of the major ostracod group Podocopida using a theoretical morphological model. A cuticular lens–tapetum model was used for this purpose. Ray tracing was simulated on each model in order to assess the light-gathering abilities of the various forms of eyes. The results of computer simulations and morphospace analyses indicated that the light-gathering ability of the eye is dominantly affected by the thickness and curvature of the outer surface of the lens. On the basis of a combination of form and light-gathering ability, four eye types (LG1, LG2, MG, and HG) were recognized. The results of the phototactic experiment and the light intensity from each microhabitat were concordant with estimated scores on the light-gathering abilities using the theoretical models. Phylogenetic analyses and the fossil record indicate that the MG type is the most plesiomorphic, and that the other types derive from this. The present study also suggests that the optical structure that determines the light-gathering ability is closely related to the development of surface ornamentation on the valve.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 147 , 97–108.
