Hydroptilid species are described from Lord Howe Island for the first time. All four species are in the endemic Australian genus Orphninotrichia, and all are endemic to Lord Howe Island. Modifications exhibited by these new species to the normally conservative Orphninotrichia features are suggestive of sympatric speciation and, for several, of a shift in larval niche.  相似文献

Larvae of two midge species, Chironomus pulcher and Chironomus imicola normally occur in different puddles of rain-water; C. pulcher in shaded and C. imicola in sunny ones. When the sun/shade signal is unclear, both species can coexist for most of each rainy season. Yet, in the laboratory, C. pulcher shows total competitive exclusion of C. imicola. The puzzle is resolved by experiments and observations which suggest that some naturally occurring puddles possess characteristics not present in laboratory pools. These include a spatial refuge (deep water) and separate shaded and sunny parts. Both variables are normally found only in larger puddles, so coexistence is a function of patch size. On its own, each variable is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for coexistence.  相似文献

Minimal concentrations of oxygen are limiting factors for limnic biocenoses. It should therefore be possible to use biocenose structure to infer minimal oxygen concentrations that have occured, provided the tolerance of the organisms concerned is known. A simple apparatus used to measure LC50 of oxygen for aquatic insect larvae with tracheal gills is described. Lethal concentrations found in some Ephemeroptera differ between species. Usually, they are strongly temperature dependent. In the species so far studied, confidence intervals are very small and suggest that such insect larvae could be used as bioindicators of minimal oxygen concentrations (even of short term ones), especially in thermically stable waters.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The sex determination mechanism in gall midges is little understood, although it is known that the females of several species primarily or exclusively produce unisexual broods throughout their lifetime.
2. The gall midge Izeniola obesula Dorchin is a multivoltine species, inducing multi-chambered stem galls on the salt-marsh plant Suaeda monoica . Each gall contains 5–70 individuals, all being the progeny of a single female. Sampling of more than 450 galls, from which adult midges were reared, suggested that I .  obesula exhibits strict monogeny, resulting in galls that contain either all female or all male progeny.
3. Characterisation of the growth pattern of young S .  monoica shoots revealed that shoots in apical positions grew more rapidly than shoots in more basal positions. Galls that were induced on such shoots were larger and yielded more adult midges.
4. No difference in the site of gall induction was found between male and female galls, with galls of either sex being mainly induced on more rapidly growing shoots. It is concluded that I .  obesula females cannot control the sex of their progeny, and that both female-producers and male-producers strive to maximise their reproductive success by choosing the faster-growing shoots for gall induction.
5. Female galls were larger and more abundant than male galls at almost all times. The sex ratio among galls fluctuated throughout the year, ranging from 4:1 in spring to 1:1 in winter. The skewed sex ratio among galls possibly results from greater mortality rates among male galls than among female galls, due to either primary or secondary factors. Alternatively, it is possible that the number or fitness of male-producers in the population is reduced relative to female-producers.  相似文献

Examples of the commercial trap Mosquito Magnet Pro (MMP emitting attractant 1-octen-3-ol in carbon dioxide 500 mL/min generated from propane fuel), were run 24 h/day on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, during June-August 2001 and evaluated for catching Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). From 30 days trapping, the catch averaged 2626 +/- 1358 Culicoides females/trap/day (mean +/- SE, range 558 +/- 139 to 6088 +/- 3597, for five sets of six consecutive nights), predominantly the pest Culicoides impunctatus Goetghebuer (68% overall), plus C. vexans (Staeger) > C. delta Edwards > C. pulicaris (L.) > C. lupicaris Downs & Kettle > C. albicans (Winnertz) > other Culicoides spp. Attempts were made to enhance the odour baiting system by adding hexane-extracts (2.1 mg/day) of hair samples from large host animals, resulting in the following effects on Culicoides collections: sheep - 53 %, red deer - 26 %, calf + 20%, pony + 40%, water buffalo + 262%, with greatest increases for C. impunctatus and C. pulicaris. Serial concentrations of these animal extracts (10(-1) - 10(-3) x 2.2 g/mL) were assayed on parous female C. impunctatus response in a Y-tube olfactometer (air-flow 150 mL/min), and by electroantennogram (EAG) on Culicoides nubeculosus Meigen laboratory-reared parous females. Positive behavioural responses to host odours were dose-dependent: the water buffalo extract being most active (threshold 0.22 g/mL), similar to deer, whereas other host extracts were > or = 10-fold less active. Correspondingly, the EAG threshold was lowest for water buffalo, 10-fold greater for deer, calf and pony, but not detected for sheep. If the active component(s) of these host extracts can be identified and synthesized, they might be employed to improve the capture of Culicoides midges for local control by removal trapping.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal distributions of Chironomus crassicaudatus, Chironomus decorus, Glyptotendipes paripes, Cryptochironomus fulvus and Tanypodinae midge larvae and selected associated environmental variables (physico-chemical variables of water, sediment chemistry and algal composition) were studied for one year in natural Lake Monroe and man-made Konomac Lake in central Florida. Ordination analysis (CCA with variation partitioning) showed that in each lake, sediment variables were the most important environmental variables. However, the most important proportion of species variability in pooled data from both lakes was explained by lake-specific combinations of water, sediment and algal variables. Chironomid larvae were ordinated with increasing depth as follows: G. paripes, C. fulvus, C. crassicaudatus, Tanypodinae, and C. decorus. This trend was similar for both lakes individually as well as for the pooled data. As water depth increased, organic matter content and associated metals concentrations in sediment increased. Glyptotendipes paripes displayed significant, negative correlation with water depth and sediment total carbon content, while C. decorus showed a significant positive correlation with these variables; C. crassicaudatus did not show any significant correlation with either of these variables. The algal composition in the pooled data from both lakes was another important factor affecting the larval distributions. The proportion of G. paripes and C. decorus larvae increased with filamentous algal density, and C. crassicaudatus larvae with increasing Cyanobacteria. Although both study lakes were very shallow, the effect of water depth (alone or shared with environmental variables) on chironomid larval community composition was substantially higher than the seasonality (sampling month) effect.  相似文献

The pupae of the predaceous midges, Pachyhelea pachymera (Williston, 1900) and Clastrieromyia dycei Spinelli and Grogan, 1986, are redescribed and illustrated using modern terminology from specimens collected in Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos Provinces, Argentina, and Artigas Department, Uruguay. Both species exhibit elongated, thin anteromedial sensilla that are characteristic of other genera in the tribe Palpomyiini. Character differences from known pupae of the New World species in the Palpomyia tibialis group are noted for P. pachymera and differences from other Palpomyiini genera are noted for C. dycei.  相似文献

Three chironomid midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) species (Cricotopus sylvestris (Fabricius); Psectrocladius limbatellus (Holmgren), Tanytarsus fimbriatus Reiss and Fittkau) live at high densities and dominate the midge assemblage found in slow sand filter beds. After filter beds are drained and cleaned, the substratum consists of sand of different particle sizes, but once beds are refilled and in operation, organic material accumulates on the sand and Cladophora grows. In laboratory experiments, we found that larvae of the three midge species preferred different substratum types: C. sylvestris preferred sand to both Cladophora and organic material, P. limbatellus preferred Cladophora, and Tanytarsus sp. preferred organic material. Some evidence of preference for one particle size was also found, but compared with substratum types, this was neither as marked or contrasting between the three species. The contrasting preferences that we found in the laboratory suggest that the substratum will influence the microdistribution of the three species in filter beds, and provide further evidence of the importance of substratum in midge assemblages.  相似文献

We examined patterns of herbivory in the dioecious desert shrub, Ephedra trifurca (Ephedraceae), along a small watershed in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. We documented significant (p=0.002) sexual dimorphism in densities of Lasioptera ephedrae and L. ephedricola (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), with male E. trifurca supporting higher densities than did females. Densities of gall midges varied significantly (p<0.001) among four sample populations of E. trifurca arrayed along the watershed and exhibited an inverse gradient with elevation. There was also a significant (p=0.006) sex-by-site interaction such that the degree of intersexual variation in gall densities decreased down the watershed. Variation in gall densities and intersexual variation in gall densities exhibited inverse trends with variation in soil water and inorganic nitrogen concentrations along the watershed.  相似文献

Production and P/B ratios of predaceous midges of the tribes Sphaeromiini and Palpomyiini (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) collected from sublittoral and littoral depths in Lake Norman, North Carolina, were estimated by the size-frequency method. Production estimates in g dry wt/m2/yr at eight sampling locations ranged from 0.002 to 0.022. The littoral zone as a whole was more productive (0.015 g/m2/yr) than the sublittoral zone (0.006 g/m2/yr). The P/B ratios ranged from 2.37 to 3.78 among all stations and depths.  相似文献
