Keratoconus is a progressive bilateral corneal protrusion that leads to irregular astigmatism and impairment of vision. Keratoconus is an etiologically heterogeneous corneal dystrophy and both environmental and genetic factors play a role in its etiopathogenesis. In this analytical review, we have studied all the genes that are structurally associated with keratoconus and have tried to explain the function of each gene and its association with other eye disorders in a concise way. In addition, using gene set enrichment analysis, it was attempted to find the most important impaired metabolic pathways in keratoconus. Several genetic studies have been carried out on keratoconus and several genes have been identified as risk factors involved in the etiology of the disease. In the current study, 16 studies, including nine association studies, five genome-wide association studies, one linkage study, and one meta-analysis, were reviewed and based on the 19 genes found, enrichment was performed and the most important metabolic pathways involved in the disease were identified. The enrichment results indicated that the two pathways, interleukin 1 processing and assembly of collagen fibrils, are significantly associated with the disease. Obviously, the results of this study, in addition to providing information about the genes involved in the disease, can provide an integrated insight into the gene-based etiology of keratoconus and therapeutic opportunities thereof.  相似文献

The apposition compound eye of a nocturnal bee, the halictid Megalopta genalis, is described for the first time. Compared to the compound eye of the worker honeybee Apis mellifera and the diurnal halictid bee Lasioglossum leucozonium, the eye of M. genalis shows specific retinal and optical adaptations for vision in dim light. The major anatomical adaptations within the eye of the nocturnal bee are (1) nearly twofold larger ommatidial facets and (2) a 4–5 times wider rhabdom diameter than found in the diurnal bees studied. Optically, the apposition eye of M. genalis is 27 times more sensitive to light than the eyes of the diurnal bees. This increased optical sensitivity represents a clear optical adaptation to low light intensities. Although this unique nocturnal apposition eye has a greatly improved ability to catch light, a 27-fold increase in sensitivity alone cannot account for nocturnal vision at light intensities that are 8 log units dimmer than during daytime. In order to comparatively analyze curtain-like septa in the eyes of visually orientated "close-to-surface-predators" among atherinomorph teleosts, we examined the eyes of 24 atherinomorph species under a binocular microscope with regard to the falciform process and related structures in the vitreous cavity. Additionally, falciform process samples were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. All the studied representatives of the Cyprinodontiformes and Atheriniformes, and of one of the beloniform suborder, Adrianichthyioidei, possess a "typical" processus falciformis. In the eyes of the representatives of the other beloniform suborder, Belonoidei, however, pigmented structures that originate in the region of the optic disc and protrude into the vitreous cavity were noted. In the Hemiramphidae (halfbeaks) and Exocoetidae (flying fishes) these pigmented structures have a more cone-like shape, whereas in the Belonidae (needlefishes) and Scomberesocidae (sauries) horizontally oriented heavily pigmented curtain-like septa occur that divide the vitreous cavity dorsoventrally. It is suggested that the "typical" processus falciformis represents a plesiomorphic feature within the Atherinomorpha, whereas the pigmented modifications of the falciform process must be seen as a synapomorphic character state of the Belonoidei. The curtain-like septum of the Belonidae and Scomberesocidae might have evolved from the cone-like structures that are found in the Exocoetoidea. The functional significance of the pigmented structures in the eye is as yet not clear, except for the curtain-like septum found in Belonidae. It might play a role in visual orientation near the water surface at Snell's window.  相似文献

Planar polarity patterning involves long-range signaling and signal transduction. In Drosophila eye, Dishevelled (Dsh) is not only crucial for cell-autonomous transduction of a polarity signal(s) but is also involved in nonautonomous signaling function. To identify the sites for long-range polarity signaling in eye disc, we examined spatial and temporal conditions for nonautonomous Dsh function. Here we show that Dsh and its downstream factor Armadillo (Arm) are required in the border region of eye disc between the peripodial membrane (PM) and the disc proper (DP) for nonautonomous signaling. Conditional misexpression of Dsh or Arm at the posterior margin of the disc was sufficient to induce nonautonomous polarity reversals. A critical time window for the induction of such changes was approximately coincident with the timing of morphogenetic furrow initiation. Our data suggest that the disc margin is an essential site for organizing planar polarity during the initial stage of retinal morphogenesis.  相似文献

It often is assumed that more distant allopatry should reflect reduced rates of contemporary gene flow and/or greater divergence in mate recognition systems. This assumption, however, is rarely tested and may not always be appropriate. Here we investigated female preference for local and foreign males in a morphologically variable Australian freshwater fish, the Pacific blue-eye Pseudomugil signifer. Using a multidisciplinary approach that combined molecular phylogeography with conventional mate choice experiments, we found female blue-eyes spent more time in association with local males only when the alternative was a foreigner from a geographically and genetically more distant population. When offered the choice between two foreign males, females associated more with males from the population that was more closely adjacent to their own. Our results suggest that female preference for local over foreign males in blue-eyes may depend on how genetically and geographically separated populations are from one another.  相似文献

A vertebrate eye was induced via a series of coordinated inductive interactions. Here, we describe a novel in vitro system to induce eye formation at high frequency using Xenopus early gastrulae. The eye formed in vitro is morphologically similar to the normal eye. When the in vitro eye was transplanted into a stage-33 tadpole, the optic nerve was seen extending from the grafted eye to the tectum of the host brain and the in vitro eye graft was retained after metamorphosis. In addition, we transplanted the eye formed in vitro into a tadpole with both eyes removed. The resultant juvenile frogs could perceive brightness using the grafted eye and thereby control their skin color, suggesting that the eye formed in vitro could function normally.  相似文献

Here we report a quick functional analysis of two mammalian serine/threonine kinases, a serum inducible kinase (Snk) and Homo sapiens hepatoma protein kinase (HsHPK), using Drosophila eye as a model system. We generated transgenic fly lines carrying constructs of both kinases under control of the GAL upstream activating sequence (UAS). Each UAS line was then crossed to a line in which GAL4 expression was driven by one of the following promoters, eyeless (ey), glass or decapentaplegic. Thus, different kinase mutants can be ectopically expressed in a promoter-dependent manner. We observed that the ectopic expression of either the wild-type or active form of Snk driven by the glass promoter resulted in a rough-eye phenotype. Nevertheless, the ectopic expression of HsHPK under the control of the ey promoter resulted in a small-eye phenotype. The results of this study demonstrated that ectopic expression of these two mammalian genes could be achieved by the regulation of Drosophila promoters. In addition, the effects of these ectopically expressed genes on eye development could be an implication of their functions with respect to cell proliferation and differentiation. Thus, Drosophila eye, with the powerful genetic tools and vast information on eye development available, can be a useful system to probe the functions of mammalian genes in the postgenome era.  相似文献

Butterfly pigmentation patterns are one of the most spectacular and vivid examples of pattern formation in biology. They have attracted much attention from experimentalists and theoreticians, who have tried to understand the underlying genetic, chemical and physical processes that lead to patterning. In this paper, we present a brief review of this field by first considering the generation of the localised, eyespot, patterns and then the formation of more globally controlled patterns. We present some new results applied to pattern formation on the wing of the mimetic butterfly Papilio dardanus.  相似文献

The class-B type-I scavenger receptor (SR-BI) plays a key role in cholesterol homeostasis; it mediates the selective uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol to steroidogenic tissues. We show by RT-PCR, western blot, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry analysis that SR-BI is highly expressed in different neuro-retinal and non-neuronal cells types on rat eye. Immunohistochemistry of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) involved in neurosteroid production showed the same expression pattern than SR-BI in rat eye. Our results may suggest a key role of these genes in the ocular cholesterol metabolism for membranes biosynthesis and neurosteroidogenesis.  相似文献
