The “balloon hairs” of L1 caterpillars of Lymantria dispar (Lep., Lymantriidae) are jointed, hollow and filled with a fluid. Detection of nicotine in the balloon hairs as well as feeding-deterrent effects of whole larvae and nicotine on ants indicate that these setae serve for defense against predatory arthropods and parasitoids but not for soaring of the larvae. Titers of nicotine and other components were determined for several developmental stages of L. dispar and compared.  相似文献

1. Yponomeuta evonymellus is a monophagous moth that feeds on Prunus padus which is native to Europe. In recent years, larval feeding and egg clusters have also been observed on non‐native Prunus serotina plants; however, survival of larvae on this new host is very low. 2. The objective of the present study was to determine how the feeding of larvae on each of the two host plants impacts oviposition, offspring survival and fecundity in Y. evonymellus. Our hypothesis was that, under controlled conditions, females will lay eggs on the host on which they fed as larvae. We also hypothesised that the lower survival of young larvae feeding on P. serotina was due to the smaller buds and leaves present in this species, relative to those of P. padus. 3. A dual‐choice experiment conducted under laboratory conditions demonstrated that females preferentially chose to oviposit on the plant species on which they fed as larvae. In the experiment, potential fecundity and offspring survival were significantly higher on P. padus than on P. serotina. The reduced performance of Y. evonymellus on P. serotina was correlated with a smaller bud mass and volume, lower leaf mass and surface area, and difficulty in constructing a protective tent against unfavourable weather conditions. 4. In summary, the identity of the host plant species during larval feeding determines adult oviposition preference for that host species. The survival of larvae on P. serotina growing in the nature is low, but for phenology‐related reasons.  相似文献

Hormone-regulated processing of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine was studied in an insect cell line derived from imaginal wing discs of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner). The cell line, IAL-PID2, responded to treatment with 20-hydroxyecdysone with increased incorporation of GlcNAc into glycoproteins. Cycloheximide and tunicamycin counteracted the action of the hormone. In particular, treatment with 20-hydroxyecdysone resulted in the secretion of a 5,000 dalton N-acetyl-D-glucosamine-rich glycopeptide by the IAL-PID2 cells. Accumulation of this peptide was prevented by the use of teflubenzuron, a potent chitin synthesis inhibitor. A glycopeptide of similar molecular weight was observed in imaginal discs of P. interpunctella treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone in vitro, under conditions that induce chitin synthesis. Although the function of the 5,000 dalton glycopeptide is not known, we believe that the PID2 cell line is a promising model for molecular analysis of ecdysteroid-regulated processing of aminosugars by epidermal cells during insect development.  相似文献

Abstract.  The fruit piercing moth, Eudocima fullonia (Clerck) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), whose larval host plants are vines of the family Menispermaceae in Asia, Africa and Australia, is thought to have adapted to Erythrina spp. in the Pacific and Papua New Guinea and has been designated as a separate biotype from the Australasian and African biotype. To test the hypothesis that the Pacific population of E. fullonia is a biotype, feeding trials with the host plants Tinospora homosepala Diels (Menispermaceae) and Erythrina variegata Linn. (Fabaceae) were conducted in Guam. The results indicate that the Guam population of E. fullonia is a biotype that has expanded its host range from its normal Menispermaceae plants to Erythrina species, possibly due to genetic changes and/or the presence of closely related alkaloids in both the species and paucity of menisperms.  相似文献

1 The plastic laminate flake formulation, Disparlure II, is currently the only gypsy moth mating disruption product available for aerial application. The elimination of a sticking agent from the formulation would reduce costs, simplify application, and make it possible to apply the product without specialized equipment. 2 A test was conducted in wooded plots in Virginia during 1997 and 1998 to determine whether a sticking agent is necessary. Treatment effectiveness was assessed from the rates of male moth capture in pheromone‐baited traps and mating success of both laboratory‐reared and wild females. 3 Male moth capture was reduced 75.6 and 92.9% in plots treated with flakes without and with a sticking agent, respectively. The percentage of mated females that produced egg masses with more than 5% fertile eggs was reduced by 86.3 and 99.5% in plots treated with flakes without and with a sticking agent, respectively. 4 Moth capture and mating success of laboratory‐reared females did not differ significantly between plots treated with flakes with and without a sticking agent. However, the consistently greater reduction in mating success in both years provides strong evidence that mating disruption is less effective when flakes are applied without a sticking agent. The proportion of wild egg masses collected in 1998 with more than 5% fertile eggs was significantly higher under the no‐sticking agent treatment. 5 In special situations where the use of a sticking agent may be problematic, such as in residential areas, the data indicate that a high level of mating disruption is likely to occur even without the use of a sticking agent.  相似文献

The spread of melanic forms of the peppered moth ( Biston betularia (L.)) over polluted areas of Britain from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, has become widely known and quoted as a classical example of microevolutionary change. Probably the most important factor in the spread (and subsequent decline, following the Clean Air Act) of the melanics has been bird predation on less cryptic individuals, but a range of other factors may also affect the maintenance of allele frequencies at any one place (site selection, dispersion, heterosis, frequency dependent selection, larval hardiness, etc). The development of the "Peppered Moth Story" is described, and suggestions made about needed research.  相似文献

Adult winter moths ( Operophtera brumata (L.)) are active in late autumn or early winter. The eggs overwinter in the canopy of trees and hatch simultaneously with the bursting of host tree buds. Many young larvae disperse on the wind on silk strands. Larvae are polyphagus and feed until late spring when they pupate in soil or leaf litter. The duration of the egg and pupal stages is genetically determined and varies with latitude. The egg stage is long in the north and short in the south, while the pupal stage is short in the north and long in the south.
The literature on the ecology and physiology of winter moth is reviewed. The factors maintaining the unusual phenology are discussed. It is concluded that the larval stage is early because mature leaves of many host trees are unsuitable as food, because parasitism against later larvae is more intense, and because summer temperatures may be injurious to larvae. The adult period is late in the year so that the final stages of pupal development occur in cool conditions and so that adults emerge after most insect predators have ceased activity. Throughout most of the range retarding the adult emergence period would cause activity to be impeded by severe winter weather; in the south this is not so and it is suggested that eggs must be on the trees for a minimum period to ensure synchronization of egg hatch with bud burst. The protracted adult emergence period may be an adaptation reducing predation by birds.  相似文献
