Resting cyst formation of Eutreptiella gymnastica Throndsen was observed during a mesocosm experiment, where nutrient enrichment had induced almost a unialgal bloom. Cells and resting cysts of E. gymnastica were examined in scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and light microscopy. Mature cysts were spherical, with a smooth thick mucilaginous cover that appeared layered when observed with the TEM. Intermediate forms were spherical and lacking flagella and a mucilaginous cover; the euglenoid pellicular striation and canal opening were easily visible. The volume of these intermediate spherical cells and mature cysts was estimated to have increased threefold compared to flagellated cells and contained many paramylon grains. When the cells were grazed by zooplankton, the paramylon grains passed the gut intact and were packed into fecal pellets. Intact undigested paramylon grains were observed in SEM after the breaking up of the pellets.  相似文献

Natural selection's role in speciation has been of fundamental importance since Darwin first outlined his theory. Recently, work has focused on understanding how selection drives trait divergence, and subsequently reproductive isolation. “Immigrant inviability,” a barrier that arises from selection against immigrants in their nonnative environment, appears to be of particular importance. Although immigrant inviability is likely ubiquitous, we know relatively little about how selection acts on traits to drive immigrant inviability, and how important immigrant inviability is at early‐versus‐late stages of divergence. We present a study evaluating the role of predation in the evolution of immigrant inviability in recently diverged population pairs and a well‐established species pair of Brachyrhaphis fishes. We evaluate performance in a high‐predation environment by assessing survival in the presence of a predator, and swimming endurance in a low‐predation environment. We find strong signatures of local adaptation and immigrant inviability of roughly the same magnitude both early and late in divergence. We find remarkably conserved selection for burst‐speed swimming (important in predator evasion), and selection for increased size in low‐predation environments. Our results highlight the consistency with which selection acts during speciation, and suggest that similar factors might promote initial population differentiation and maintain differentiation at late stages of divergence.  相似文献

Small eukaryotes (0.2-5 microm) in hyper-eutrophic conditions were described using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and cloning-sequencing, and were related to environmental variables both by an experimental approach and by a temporal field study. In situ analysis showed marked temporal variations in the dominant terminal restriction fragments (T-RFs), which were related to environmental variables such as nutrient concentrations and metazooplankton composition. To monitor the responses of the small-eukaryote community to top-down (absence or presence of planktivorous fish) and bottom-up (low or high nitrogen and phosphorus addition) effects, a cross-classified design mesocosm experiment was used. Depending on the type of treatment, we recorded changes in the diversity of T-RFs, as well as modifications in phylogenetic composition. Centroheliozoa and Cryptophyta were found in all types of treatment, whereas Chlorophyta were specific to enclosures receiving high nutrient loadings, and were associated either with LKM11 and 'environmental sequences'. Cercozoa and Fungi were not detected in enclosures receiving high nutrient loadings and fishes. Our results showed that resources and top-down factors are both clearly involved in shaping the structure of small eukaryotes, not only autotrophs but also heterotrophs, via complex interactions and trophic cascades within a microbial loop, notably in response to nutrient loading.  相似文献

We evaluated how water residence time mediated the impact of zebramussels Dreissena polymorpha and bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus on experimental food webs established in1100-l outdoor mesocosms. Water residence time was manipulated asa surrogate for seston resupply – a critical variable affectinggrowth and survival of suspension-feeding invertebrates. We used a2×2×2 factorial experimental design witheight treatment combinations (3 replicates/treatment) including thepresence or absence of Dreissena (2000 per m2), juvenilebluegill (40 per mesocosm), and short (1100 l per d) or long (220 lper d) water residence time. Measures of seston concentration(chlorophyll a, turbidity and suspended solids) were greaterin the short- compared to long water-residence mesocosms, butintermediate in short water-residence mesocosms containing Dreissena. Abundance of rotifers (Keratella and Polyarthra) was reduced in Dreissena mesocosms and elevatedin short residence time mesocosms. Cladocera abundance, in general,was unaffected by the presence of Dreissena; densities werehigher in short-residence time mesocosms, and reduced in thepresence of Lepomis. The growth of juvenile Lepomiswere unaffected by Dreissena because of abundant benthicfood. The final total mass of Dreissena was significantlygreater in short- than long-residence mesocosms. Impacts of Dreissena on planktonic food webs may not only depend on thedensity of zebra mussels but also on the residence time of thesurrounding water and the resupply of seston.  相似文献

Aquatic multispecies tests are increasingly used to assess the fateand effects of pesticides in Europe. The rationale for their use,although originally based upon ecological arguments, is now morelikely to be based upon uncertainties surrounding the true exposure of organisms in natural ecosystems. This shift inrationale promotes the design of more focused studies, but does notovercome difficulties associated with the extrapolation of mesocosmand microcosm results to natural systems. Priorities for furtherresearch into these systems should be the extent to which resultscan be repeated and reproduced, and the level of precision andaccuracy of predictions from microcosms and mesocosms to naturalecosystems.  相似文献

Newly hatched autumn-spawned herring larvae Clupea harengus were released in two 2500-m3 outdoor mesocosms and reared over a 2-month period. Hydrographic conditions were similar in the two mesocosms, but the average plankton density was initially more than 10 times higher in mesocosm B compared to mesocosm A (>11−1 v. <0.11−1). Half-way through the experiment the feeding conditions reversed with three times higher average densities in mesocosm A than in mesocosm B (>31−1 v. ∼11−1). Herring larvae were sampled with a 0.3-m2 two-chambered net twice weekly, and survivors were harvested by draining the mesocosms at the end of the experiment. Otolith growth trajectories of individual larvae were determined by relating radial otolith size with number of increments from the outer edge of the otolith (days before capture). The increment widths during the first 3 weeks after hatching, including the first-check size, were generally wider among larvae from mesocosm B (relatively good initial feeding conditions) than among those from mesocosm A (poor initial feeding conditions). The otolith growth pattern also confirmed that the surviving herring in mesocosm A belonged to the upper size range of larvae in the mesocosm after only 2–3 weeks from hatching; no such trend was found in mesocosm B. In both mesocosms the otolith size-at-age indicated that with the present sampling gear, herring larvae larger than 20–25 mm were underrepresented in the net samples. The information obtained from otolith-size-at-age is compared with other morphometric and biochemical measures of size and condition of larvae obtained throughout the experiment.  相似文献

We developed incubation chambers of clear acrylic extending the full depth of the water column to measure in situ depth-integrated community metabolism in experimental planktonic–benthic ecosystems. A magnetic stirring apparatus at mid-depth in each chamber prevented stratification and maintained a vertical turnover time that roughly matched turnover in the experimental ecosystems. We used the chambers in light–dark experiments to partition the depth-integrated photosynthesis and respiration occurring in the experimental ecosystems among water column, wall periphyton, and benthic communities. Community metabolism measured with the chambers was positively related to the chlorophyll-a concentrations of the water column and wall periphyton communities. We also found close agreement between the summation of partitioned community metabolism measured in the chambers and an independent measure of total ecosystem metabolism in the experimental ecosystems. Incubations in chambers and in light–dark bottles revealed similar patterns of water column and wall periphyton community metabolism, but magnitudes differed. In addition to application in experimental ecosystems, this incubation chamber technique may provide an efficient and realistic measure of water column and benthic metabolism and nutrient uptake in lakes and estuaries.  相似文献

Climate change is causing measurable changes in rainfall patterns, and will likely cause increases in extreme rainfall events, with uncertain implications for key processes in ecosystem function and carbon cycling. We examined how variation in rainfall total quantity (Q), the interval between rainfall events (I), and individual event size (SE) affected soil water content (SWC) and three aspects of ecosystem function: leaf photosynthetic carbon gain (), aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and soil respiration (). We utilized rainout shelter‐covered mesocosms (2.6 m3) containing assemblages of tallgrass prairie grasses and forbs. These were hand watered with 16 I×Q treatment combinations, using event sizes from 4 to 53 mm. Increasing Q by 250% (400–1000 mm yr?1) increased mean soil moisture and all three processes as expected, but only by 20–55% (P≤0.004), suggesting diminishing returns in ecosystem function as Q increased. Increasing I (from 3 to 15 days between rainfall inputs) caused both positive () and negative () changes in ecosystem processes (20–70%, P≤0.01), within and across levels of Q, indicating that I strongly influenced the effects of Q, and shifted the system towards increased net carbon uptake. Variation in SE at shorter I produced greater response in soil moisture and ecosystem processes than did variation in SE at longer I, suggesting greater stability in ecosystem function at longer I and a priming effect at shorter I. Significant differences in ANPP and between treatments differing in I and Q but sharing the same SE showed that the prevailing pattern of rainfall influenced the responses to a given event size. Grassland ecosystem responses to extreme rainfall patterns expected with climate change are, therefore, likely to be variable, depending on how I, Q, and SE combine, but will likely result in changes in ecosystem carbon cycling.  相似文献

于 2 0 0 1年 8月和 9月对青岛 2 0 0 8年奥运会帆船比赛海域进行了理化、生物等要素的综合调查 ,并利用围隔生态实验手段 ,在太平湾进行了营养盐与赤潮的关系研究。结果显示 ,本海域水质良好 ,基本符合一类海水水质标准 ,仅有个别站位出现某种污染物超标现象 ,如 8月份麦岛附近海域氨氮和无机磷超标 ,石油烃 8月份在浮山湾东侧北海船厂附近超出一类海水水质标准。该水域的叶绿素 a含量较低 ,平均 0 .4 2 m g· m- 3,总的分布状况是太平湾西侧的海域较高。初级生产力 8月高于 9月 ,分别为 179.0 mg C m- 2· d- 1和 114 .0 mg C m- 2· d- 1。浮游植物以硅藻中的中肋骨条藻、奇异菱形藻、旋链角刺藻和塔形冠盖藻为主 ,其细胞数量 8月明显高于 9月 ,分别为 4 5 7.2 6× 10 4 m- 3和 16 .38× 10 4 m- 3,数量密集中心在调查区西部。浮游动物生物量 8月比 9月高近 10倍 ,分别为 2 39.1m g· m- 3和 2 4 .7mg· m- 3,强壮箭虫在生物量中起主要作用 ,生物量和个体数量的分布与浮游植物基本相反。加营养盐的围隔实验表明 ,加硅会导致海链藻、短弯角藻、丹麦细柱藻和中肋骨条藻中的任何一种赤潮 ,硅成为该海域的主要限制因子。  相似文献
