We investigated the role of maintenance and origin of female mating preferences in three species of fish. Poecilia latipinna and P. mexicana are sexual species that hybridized to form the gynogenetic clonal P. formosa, which reproduces asexually but requires sperm to initiate embryogenesis. We demonstrate that all three species display almost identical and statistically indistinguishable preferences for large males. Although processes of good genes, runaway sexual selection, and direct selection could maintain preferences in the sexual species, good genes and runaway sexual selection are unlikely to operate in the asexual species. Furthermore, we found that the most likely direct selection benefit, an increase in fecundity, can also be excluded in the gynogens. We conclude that the most parsimonious explanation for this P. formosa preference is that it was inherited from the parental species and is maintained without forces generated by good genes, runaway selection, or direct selection for increased fecundity. This preference may be maintained because of pleiotropic effects (e.g., sensory bias) or mate searching costs.  相似文献

Despite the importance of sexual isolation to speciation, few studies have analyzed the genetic basis of interspecific mating discrimination, particularly using hybrid males. In this study, I investigated the genetic basis of sexual isolation using male hybrids of Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis. Hybrid male mating success was caused by interactions between the X-chromosome and autosomes (or Y-chromosome), and different arms of the X-chromosome contributed to mating success with females of each species. Further, although there was an X-chromosome component to mating success, its magnitude was not disproportionately large when compared with the proportion of the genome contained on this chromosome. Some hybrid males courted with an anomalously low intensity, so I simultaneously mapped the genetic basis of this “courtship dysfunction.” The courtship dysfunction was caused by an interaction between the left arm of the X-chromosome in D. persimilis with the autosomes or Y-chromosome from D. pseudoobscura. Anomalous courtship behavior in interspecific hybrids can obscure the conclusions of studies of the genetics of sexual isolation, so courtship intensity should be evaluated in all such investigations.  相似文献

Repeated mating by females of many species occurs at frequenciesin excess of those needed to acquire additional sperm for fertilizingova. I tested three alternative hypotheses for the rate of rematingby females of the courtship-feeding tree cricket, Oecanthusnigricornis Walker, by manipulating diet quality and courtshipfeeding and measuring the time to remating by the female inrelation to four aspects of male phenotype (age, condition, fluctuating asymmetry, and size). First, in courtship-feedingspecies, remating may be due to selection to increase the amountof nutritional resources provided by males, with nutrient-deprivedfemales remating more quickly. Second, remating may functionas a mechanism of postcopulatory mate choice, with females rematingquickly when the quality of a previous mate is low. Third, quicknessof remating may be the consequence of precopulatory mate choiceprior to future matings, with females remating more quicklywith high-quality males, regardless of the quality of priormates. Females on a low-quality diet remated quickly, did notvary remating speed with the phenotype of their first mate, and did not differentially reject prospective second mates withdifferent phenotypes. In contrast, both the degree of coyness(measured as the frequency of mate rejection) and the intensityof female choice (measured as the size differential betweenaccepted and rejected mates) increased with diet quality. Theseresults support both the material-benefits and the precopulatorymate-choice hypotheses for remating speed of female tree crickets. There was mixed support for the postcopulatory choice hypothesis:females on the high-quality diet remated more slowly after firstmating with relatively large males, in support of the postcopulatorychoice hypothesis; however, the remating interval of femaleson the high-quality diet decreased with the condition of thefirst mate, opposite to the prediction of the postcopulatorychoice hypothesis  相似文献

A rapid and accurate method based on multiplex PCR using three different primers was developed for determining mating type inCochliobolus heterostrophus. The primers of MAT113 and MAT123 were uniquely derived fromMAT1-1 andMAT1-2, respectively, and the primer MATcon5 is conserved in the flanking regions of the idiomorphs. The amplification product was estimated to be 702 bp (MAT1-1) or 547 bp (MAT1-2). Crossing experiments confirmed the accuracy of this method, which requires less time than the conventional determination of mating type.  相似文献

Spawning migrations in the monogamous butterflyfish,Chaetodon trifasciatus   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Spawning and related behavior of a monogamous butterflyfish,Chaetodon trifasciatus, were observed at Kuroshima Island, Okinawa, Japan. Each heterosexual pair defended a feeding territory in the daytime. Spawning occurred at dusk on the days around full or new moon in the daytime. Spawning occurred at dusk on the days around full or new moon in the vicinity of offshore tidal currents. Spawning migration to such sites occurred in pairs, the feeding territories of which were located in areas of inshore currents. In the evening each pair established a small temporary territory, which they spawned adjacent to and slept within until the next morning. The distribution of sleeping sites as well as tidal current directions may determine the spawning sites of this butterflyfish.  相似文献

Snetselaar, K. M., Bölker, M., and Kahmann, R. 1996.Ustilago maydismating hyphae orient their growth toward pheromone sources.Fungal Genetics and Biology20,299–312. When small drops ofUstilago maydissporidia were placed 100–200 μm apart on agar surfaces and covered with paraffin oil, sporidia from one drop formed thin hyphae that grew in a zig-zag fashion toward the other drop if it contained sporidia making the appropriate pheromone. For example,a2b2mating hyphae grew towarda1b1anda1b2mating hyphae, and the filaments eventually fused tip to tip. Time-lapse photography indicated that the mating hyphae can rapidly change orientation in response to nearby compatible sporidia. When exposed to pheromone produced by cells in an adjacent drop, haploid sporidia with thea2allele began elongating before sporidia with thea1allele. Sporidia without functional pheromone genes responded to pheromone although they did not induce a response, and sporidia without pheromone receptors induced formation of mating hyphae although they did not form mating hyphae. Diploid sporidia heterozygous atbbut not ataformed straight, rigid, aerial filaments when exposed to pheromone produced by the appropriate haploid sporidia. Again, thea2a2b1b2strain formed filaments more quickly than thea1a1b1b2strain. Taken together, these results suggest that thea2pheromone diffuses less readily or is degraded more quickly than thea1pheromone.  相似文献

Bombus terrestris , a typical pollinating insect species, was offered artificial flowers of two different corolla colours with the same sucrose solution reward in an array. Common colours were significantly preferred, and the strength of the frequency-dependent response increased as a result of learning. There were also frequency-independent biases towards blue flowers, probably because blue flowers appeared more conspicuous to bumblebees than yellow flowers, and the degree of preference for blue was greater when flowers had low nectar rewards. Flower-to-flower movements by individual bumblebees between flowers were non-random, were biased to movements within the same flower colour, and were also dependent on morph frequency. The mechanisms governing flower selection in bumblebees are discussed. Pollinators foraging similarly in a natural situation would induce positive frequency-dependent selection, assortative mating, and directional selection on different corolla colour morphs of the plant population being visited, resulting in stabilizing selection for a single flower colour.  相似文献

Females of the predatory mite Parasitus fimetorum (Gamasida; Parasitina) inhabiting animal manure indiscriminately copulate with many mates. The sperm competition between the males was estimated by electrophoresis of allozymes and the effects of multiple mating on female reproduction were investigated. When females were forced to mate only once, their fecundity decreased drastically compared to the case of multiple mating (but longevity was unaffected). When one female mated with two males, the outcome of sperm competition depended greatly upon the mating interval. When the second mating occurred immediately after the first, the female fecundity decreased as in the case of single mating and the second male fertilized only a few eggs. However, when there was an interval of 1 day between the two matings, the females achieved normal fecundity and the second male fertilized approximately half the eggs. This suggests that the spermatophore deposited by the first male may act as a short-term copulatory plug in the female's genital opening. When one female mated with several males with 1 day intervals, three or more males shared fertilization of the eggs. This study suggests that the multiple mating of females is a necessary stimulus to continue oogenesis and some physiological factors for this stimulation may exist in spermatophores.  相似文献

Both sexes of adultPhoracantha semipunctata F. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) congregate on stressedEucalyptus that are the larval hosts. In a field study, 721 adultP. semipunctata captured on host trees varied considerably in body size with the largest individuals being about twice the length of the smallest. Females that were paired with a mate were similar in size to solitary females, suggesting that the probability of a female being mated was not affected by her size. However, large males had greater success than smaller males in obtaining mates. MaleP. semipunctata rely on antennal contact to locate and identify females on the larval host. Therefore, the rate at which males search for mates is a function of the area swept by their antennae per unit time. Because of their greater antennal spread, large males were able to search for females at double the rate of the smallest males. Large males also dominated in aggressive contests for females. The superior abilities of large maleP. semipunctata in both locating and defending mates account for the influence of body size on mating success.  相似文献

Reproductive behavior of the sandperch Parapercis snyderi was studied in the coastal waters of Shikoku Island, Japan. This fish is a monandric and protogynous hermaphrodite. Males maintained home ranges of ca. 10 m2 that slightly overlapped with each other. Harems included on average 2.45 females that were spaced out from each other. Males mated successively in pairs with the harem members within two hours before sunset. To release gametes, the pair rushed upward 10–200 cm. The pair spawning was sometimes parasitized by sneaking of an adjacent harem master, which had usually finished mating with his own mates. More than 80% of the sneaking rushes reached the apex of the pair rise, suggesting a high success rate of sneaking. Such sneaking by harem masters has not been reported in the genus Parapercis. The comparative reproductive ecology of this genus suggested that sneaking in P. snyderi is due to the close proximity of adjacent harems.  相似文献
