Complete maps of IS1, IS2, IS3, IS4, IS5, IS30 and IS150 locations in Escherichia coli K12 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Summary In this paper complete distribution maps are presented of the seven IS elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 30 and 150. These maps were obtained during the construction of an almost complete restriction map of the Escherichia coli genome of K12 strain BHB2600. The positions of IS elements were correlated to this map. The distribution of integration sites of all IS types is nonrandom. Besides a large gap from 79 min to 96 min, there is a pronounced IS cluster at 6 min and another at 97 min, map locations that have low gene incidences on the classical map. One cluster coincides with a region of IS induced rearrangements. The IS distribution pattern was compared to patterns of strains W3110 and HB101. 相似文献

WILLIAMS, P. H., 1989. Why are there so many species of bumble bees at Dungeness? Dungeness is unique in the British Isles in that it has more species of bumble bees than any other locality. Three ideas about what governs the number of species at a locality are examined by locking at patterns of flower visits at Dungeness in comparison with those at Shoreham, a species-poor locality also in Kent. The species of bumble bees that are present at Dungeness but absent from Shoreham show no association in their distributions among 2 km grid-squares in Kent with the species of food-plants that they prefer at Dungeness, nor is there any correlation between the diversity of bees and diversity of food-plants at Dungeness and Shoreham. From the information available, Dungeness is most likely to have more species of bumble bees because it has a particularly high density of the more nectar-rich flowers that bumble bees can use. Bumble bees feed most profitably from deep flowers because these contain more nectar than shallow flowers, although direct access to deeper flowers is ultimately limited by the length of each bee's proboscis. The distribution of worker proboscis lengths among species in the species-pool in Kent is clumped about a median of 7.9 mm. The best foraging conditions for the maximum number of species should be provided when flowers of similar depths are present in sufficiently large numbers for all foragers to make near-optimal flower choices. Although there is no difference in median between the distributions of the bees' proboscis lengths and the depths of the flowers they use at Dungeness, at Shoreham the flower depths used are shorter than the proboscis lengths. Among the food-plants at Dungeness, high densities of Teucrium scorodonia and Echium vulgare are likely to be especially important. 相似文献

Summary Specimens of the terrestrial gastropod Arianta arbustorum were fed on cadmium- or copper-enriched agar plates with the aim of performing an input/output analysis and of studying the distribution of these metals in several organs of the snails. After a feeding period of 20 days about 45% of cadmium were lost. 36% accumulated in the hepatopancreas, where a cadmium concentration of more than 500 g/g was measured. The efficiency of cadmium assimilation decreased from about 90% at the beginning to about 55% after 20 days. Copper was distributed more evenly than cadmium, but the main site of copper storage seemed to be the foot/mantle tissues, where 49% of the ingested copper were found. The efficiency of copper assimilation always exceeded 95%. The patterns of distribution and assimilation of copper and cadmium are discussed in relation to differences in the cytological and biochemical detoxification mechanisms which exist for these metals in molluscs. 相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet-B radiation on loblolly pine. I. Growth, photosynthesis and pigment production in greenhouse-grown seedlings 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
One-year old loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were grown in an unshaded greenhouse for 7 months under 4 levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation simulating stratospheric ozone reductions of 16, 25 and 40% and included a control with no UV-B radiation. Periodic measurements were made of growth and gas exchange characteristics and needle chlorophyll and UV-B-absorbing-compound concentrations. The effectiveness of UV-B radiation on seedling growth and physiology varied with the UV-B irradiance level. Seedlings receiving the lowest supplemental UV-B irradiance showed reductions in growth and photosynthetic capacity after only 1 month of irradiation. These reductions persisted and resulted in lower biomass production, while no increases in UV-B-absorbing compounds in needles were observed. Seedlings receiving UV-B radiation which simulated a 25% stratospheric ozone reduction showed an increase in UV-B-absorbing-compound concentrations after 6 months, which paralleled a recovery in photosynthesis and growth after an initial decrease in these characteristics. The seedlings grown at the highest UV-B irradiance (40% stratospheric ozone reduction) showed a more rapid increase in the concentration of UV-B-absorbing compounds and no effects of UV-B radiation on growth or photosynthetic capacity until after 4 months at this irradiance. Changes in photosynthetic capacity were probably the result of direct effects on light-dependent processes, since no effects were observed on either needle chlorophyll concentrations or stomatal conductance. Photosensitivity of germination of white clover ( Trifolium repens L. cv. Podkowa) seeds was studied under water deficit (low water potential) conditions at 25°C. The seeds showed negative photoblastism, which was most pronounced at -0.03 MPa polyethylene glycol solution. Inhibition was observed at two different wavelength bands with maxima at 660 nm (R) and around 730 nm (FR). Red light acted identically to white light (maximum inhibition ca 50%). The effect of far-red illumination was less inhibitory (20–30%). The photoresponse required long illuminations (3 h exposures); saturation level was at 0.1 W m−2 , independently of the light quality. White clover seed germination showed no reversibility of the effects of R and FR light. Prolonged illumination with R and FR increased the inhibition, and intermittent illumination had a higher effect than a continuous one. It was concluded that the photoinhibition of germination of seeds of Trifolium repens involves a reaction dependent on the rate of phytochrome interconversion, a property that is characteristic for the high irradiance reaction. 相似文献

Minesoils developed from lignite surface mining in Texas are nutrient-poor and have a high N retention capacity. A major concern of landowners and soil conservationists is the response of Coastal bermudagrass to the application of low rates of ammonium-N fertilizer on these nutrient-poor minesoils. A glasshouse study, using15N-labelled ammonium sulfate fertilizer and lignite minesoil, was conducted to measure Coastal bermudagrass biomass production and fertilizer recovery during establishment in response to clipping at 2, 4, and 8 week intervals. At N rates of 0, 40, and 80 kg N ha–1,increases in N fertilization increased Coastal bermudagrass aboveground biomass 5-fold, but showed only small increases in belowground biomass. Recovery of ammonium-N fertilizer ranged from 54 to 63%. Roots contained approximately the same N content across all fertilizer rates suggesting that young, estabilishing, Coatal bermudagrass roots reserve N until their N requirement is met. As more N is obtained above that which was needed to maintain roots, then additional N taken up by the plant was transported to aboveground plant parts for growth. Frequent clipping intensified N transport to aboveground tissues. Reduced amounts of N were contained in roots after clipping due to reductions in root growth, biomass, and resource demand. Fertilization of Coastal bermudagrass at low N rates with different N fertilizer forms influenced the distribution of N in the plant and affected N recovery by different parts of the plant. 相似文献

Leaf-specific thionins of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) have been identified as a novel class of cell-wall proteins toxic to plant-pathogenic fungi and possibly involved in the defence mechanism of plants. The distribution of these polypeptides has been studied in the host-pathogen system of barley and Erisyphe graminis DC.f.sp. hordei Marchal (powdery mildew). Immunogold-labelling of thionins in several barley cultivars indicates that resistance or susceptibility may be attributed to the presence or absence of thionins at the penetration site in walls and papillae of epidermal leaf cells.All of the leaf-specific thionin genes are confined to the distal end of the short arm of chromosome 6 of barley. Carbohydrate-hybridization probes (Vreeland and Laetsch, 1989, Planta (177, 423–434) were used to localize the homogalacturonan (pectate) component of pectins in the cell walls of leaves and soybean root nodules. Leaves of two species of the dicotyledon Dubautia were compared; these species contain much pectin but differ in their tissue water relations with respect to their cell-wall properties. Maturation of the primary cell walls in nodules was studied in the Bradyrhizobium japonicum-Glycine max symbiosis. Probe labelling was based on the divalent-cation-mediated association between pectate in tissue sections and fluorescein-conjugated pectate fragments. Pectate was also labelled by mixed-dimer formation with fluorescent polyguluronate derived from alginate. The specificity of the probe for unesterified polygalacturonate was indicated by increased cell-wall labelling after chemical or enzymatic deesterification of tissue sections, in contrast to elimination of labelling by chemical esterification. Postfixation of tissue sections improved retention of soluble pectate. Pectate differences were found in the leaves among cell types, in degree of esterification, and between plant species. The cell walls of soybean nodules were strongly labelled by the pectate probe in nodules one week and three weeks after infection. Pectate was more highly esterified in the central infected zone than in the surrouding cortex. Within the infected zone, walls of uninfected cells and infected cells were similarly labelled by the pectate probe. The results indicate that the pectate molecular probe provides detailed information on pectate distribution at the cellular level for investigations of cell-wall structure, development and physiology.Abbreviations EDTA

Relationships between nitrogen uptake and carbon assimilation in whole plants of tall fescue 总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
Abstract. The present study investigates the relationships between nitrogen uptake, transpiration, and carbon assimilation. Plants growing on nutrient solution were enclosed for 10–16 d in a growth chamber, where temperature, photon flux density, vapour saturation deficit and CO2 concentration were controlled. One of these factors was modified every 4 to 5 d. Shoot photosynthesis and root and shoot respiration were recorded every half-hour. Nitrogen uptake from the root medium and plant transpiration were measured daily. In most cases, an increase in photon flux density led to increases in transpiration, net daily carbon assimilation, and nitrogen uptake. By modifying transpiration rate without changing photosynthesis (varying vapour saturation deficit), or by modifying transpiration and carbon assimilation in opposite ways (varying CO2 air concentration), it was shown that nitrogen uptake does not follow transpiration, but is linked to the carbon uptake of the plant. When light was increased from low to intermediate levels, the N uptake/C assimilation ratio remained constant. At higher photon flux density, this ratio declined markedly. It is proposed that in the first case, growth is limited by carbohydrate availability, thus any increase in carbon assimilation leads to a proportional increase in nitrogen uptake, in contrast to the second situation where carbohydrates may accumulate in the plant without further nitrogen requirement. 相似文献

Locomotor styles, calling patterns, and the structure of advertising calls confirm that the species is Galago zanzibaricusrather than G. demidoffor G. thomasi.A detailed comparison of acoustic structure between the Malawi animals and G. zanzibaricusin Kenya demonstrates a degree of between-population variation, although the calls remain conservative in those parameters
expected to aid recognition of conspecifics. Distribution records extend the known geographical range of G. zanzibaricusover most of the northern half of Malawi. Further studies are required to link the animals from this region with either of
