Summary Analysis of 6 years' data on a population of free-living white-footed mice documents both phenotypic and environmental control of litter size. Litter size was positively correlated with maternal body size. Maternal size depended upon both seasonal and annual variation. Paradoxically, the proportion of small versus large litters varied among habitats independently of the effects of body size. The result is an influence of habitat on life history that yields patterns of reproduction and survival opposite to the predictions of demographic theory. The habitat producing the largest litters had a relatively high ratio of adult/juvenile survival. Litter size was small in the habitat where the adult/juvenile survival ratio was smallest. All of these anomalous patterns can be explained through density-dependent habitat selection by female white-footed mice. Life-history studies that ignore habitat and habitat selection may find spurious correlations among traits that result in serious misinterpretations about life history and its evolution.  相似文献

Dibutyryl cyclic monophosphate (dBcAMP) has been shown to inhibit growth, and alter the morphology of astrocytes. However, the potential contribution of its hydrolytic product, butyrate, in inducing some of the changes that have been attributed to dBcAMP, is not clear. DNA, RNA, and purine synthesis were therefore studied in primary astrocyte cultures after 24 hours of exposure to varying concentrations of butyrate, dBcAMP, and agents that increase intracellular cAMP levels. Progression of cells through cell cycle was also studied by flow cytometry. Dibutyryl cAMP partially arrested cells in Go/G1 phase of cell cycle while sodium butyrate increased the percentage population of cells in G2/M phase. DNA synthesis and de novo purine synthesis were inhibited after treatment with dBcAMP, sodium butyrate, and various drugs that increase intracellular cAMP levels. RNA synthesis was increased with cAMP but was not affected by sodium butyrate. Our study shows that at millimolar concentrations, butyrate is capable of altering the cell cycle and inhibiting DNA synthesis in primary astrocyte cultures, in a manner that is similar although not identical to the effects of dBcAMP.  相似文献

Summary The annual development of the gonads of Dreissena polymorpha was studied at three sampling sites in two lakes over 3 and 1 1/2 years, respectively. A resting stage occurred after the last spawning in summer/autumn. Oogenesis (accompanied by multiplying segmentation of the oogonia and early growth processes of its oocytes) restarted in specimens at least 1 year old at low temperatures (below 10° C) during winter and early spring. At one location (Fühlinger See) the onset of the spawning season was correlated with an increase of water temperatures above 12° C. At 2 m depth, two main spawning periods in May and August were normally recognized, the first at temperatures of 12–16° C, the second at 16–21° C. It was clearly demonstrated for the first time in Dreissena polymorpha that the oocytes became mature in successive cohorts within one gonad. A female mussel may spawn several times during the reproductive season. At 9 m depth, the onset of spawning also started at about 12° C; this occurred in late summer, with two spawning periods within 1 month at a temperature range of 12–16° C. At another location (Heider Bergsee) the size of the gonads and the oocytes was reduced during April of both years studied, when food supply was low simultaneously with rapidly rising water temperatures in this shallow lake. There was no spawning period during spring. The major spawning period was delayed until July (temperatures 19–22°C). This shows (1) the synchronizing influence of low winter temperatures on the annual reproductive cycle and (2) a temperature threshold of at least 12° C for the start of the spawning processes. The results are discussed with regard to the geographical limits of further spread of Dreissena polymorpha.  相似文献

Phosphorus availability was measured in soils under five cropping systems: alley cropping with Erythrina poeppigiana, alley cropping with Gliricidia sepium, sole cropping with Erythrina poeppigiana mulch applied, sole cropping with Gliricidia sepium mulch applied, sole cropping with no mulch. The following parameters were measured: 1) plant-available soil P assessed by P uptake of maize and bean bioassay plants; 2) phosphate desorbable by anion exchange resin; 3) adsorption of added P into isotopically exchangeable and non-exchangeable pools.In the bioassay, P uptake of beans declined in the order: mulched sole-cropped>unmulched sole-cropped>alley-cropped soils. For maize the relative uptake was: mulched sole-cropped>unmulched sole-cropped = alley-cropped soils. These results suggest trees had not incorporated a significant quantity of P into the system after seven years and, probably, there was a decrease in available soil P due to the sequestration of P in the tree biomass. Potentially resin-desorbable P was higher in alley-cropped and mulched sole-cropped soils than in unmulched sole-cropped soils. The adsorption and desorption of added P into and from exchangeable and non-exchangeable pools did not differ between alley-cropped and unmulched sole-cropped soils.Crop yield and crop N, P and K uptake were all higher in the alley crops than in the unmulched sole crop. The supply of P to the crop under alley cropping seems to be dependent on P cycled and released from the mulch. The P cycle in alley cropping appears to be self-sustaining at least under conditions of moderate P fertiliser input.  相似文献

Oscillations in the rate of photosynthesis of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) leaves were induced by subjecting leaves, whose photosynthetic apparatus had been activated, to a sudden transition from darkness or low light to high-intensity illumination, or by transfering them in the light from air to an atmosphere containing saturating CO2. It was found that at the first maximum, light-and CO2-saturated photosynthesis can be much faster than steady-state photosynthesis. Both QA in the reaction center of PS II and P700 in the reaction center of PS I of the chloroplast electron-transport chain were more oxidized during the maxima of photosynthesis than during the minima. Maxima of P700 oxidation slightly preceded maxima in photosynthesis. During a transition from low to high irradiance, the assimilatory force FA, which was calculated from ratios of dihydroxyacetone phosphate to phosphoglycerate under the assumption that the reactions catalyzed by NADP-dependent glyceraldehydephosphate dehydrogenase, phosphoglycerate kinase and triosephosphate isomerase are close to equilibrium, oscillated in parallel with photosynthesis. However, only one of its components, the calculated phosphorylation potential (ATP)/(ADP)(Pi), paralleled photosynthesis, whereas calculated NADPH/NADP ratios exhibited antiparallel behaviour. When photosynthetic oscillations were initiated by a transition from low to high CO2, the assimilatory force FA declined, was very low at the first minimum of photosynthesis and increased as photosynthesis rose to its second maximum. The observations indicate that the minima in photosynthesis are caused by lack of ATP. This leads to overreduction of the electron-transport chain which is indicated by the reduction of P700. Summary Four inbred lines ofZea mays (33.16, B 68, N 7B, B 77) were grown in nutrient solution to which K2Cr2O7 was added to give final concentration of 5 mg/l Cr (VI). The most evident differences in metal tolerance were observed between the B 68 and 33.16 line: in fact, even though the level of Cr (VI) was almost the same in the root tissues of both lines after 6 d of treatment, in the B 68 line, Cr induced marked alterations of nuclear structure and a progressive arrest of the cell cycle in G 1. The development of membrane bioenergetic studies during the last 25 years has clearly demonstrated the validity of the Mitchellian chemiosmotic H+ cycle concept. The circulation of H+ ions was shown to couple respiration-dependent or light-dependent energy-releasing reactions to ATP formation and performance of other types of membrane-linked work in mitochondria, chloroplasts, some bacteria, tonoplasts, secretory granules and plant and fungal outer cell membranes. A concrete version of the direct chemiosmotic mechanism, in which H+ potential formation is a simple consequence of the chemistry of the energy-releasing reaction, is already proved for the photosynthetic reaction centre complexes.Recent progress in the studies on chemiosmotic systems has made it possible to extend the coupling-ion principle to an ion other than H+. It was found that, in ceertain bacteria, as well as in the outer membrane of the animal cell, Na+ effectively substitutes for H+ as the coupling ion (the chemiosmotic Na+ cycle). A precedent is set when the Na+ cycle appears to be the only mechanism of energy production in the bacterial cell. In the more typical case, however, the H+ and Na+ cycles coexist in one and the same membrane (bacteria) or in two diffeerent membranes of one and the same cell (animals). The sets of and generators as well as and consumers found in different types of biomembranes, are listed and discussed.  相似文献

The key step in the visual pigment regeneration process is an enzyme-catalyzedtrans tocis retinoid isomerization reaction. This reaction is of substantial general interest, because it requires the input of metabolic energy. The energy is needed because the 11-cis-retinoid reaction products are approximately 4kcal/mol higher in energy than their all-trans congeners. In the retinal pigment epithelium a novel enzymatic system has been discovered which is capable of converting all-trans-retinol into all-trans retinyl esters, by means of a lecithin retinol acyl transferase (LRAT), followed by the direct processing of the ester into 11-cis-retinol. In this process the free energy of hydrolysis of a retinyl ester, estimated to be approximately –5kcal/mol, is coupled to the endothermic (+4kcal/mol) isomerization reaction, resulting in an overall exothermic process. The overall process is analogous to ATP-dependent group transfer reactions, but here the energy is provided by the membrane phospholipids. This process illustrates a new role for membranes: they can serve as an energy source.  相似文献

Summary Early development of Platynereis massiliensis was studied in serial sections of fixed embryos and in living or fixed embryos whose nuclei had been made visible with a fluorescent label. The unfertilized egg is an ellipsoid with three axes of differing length. The longest axis corresponds to the dorsoventral axis of the developing embryo. Egg volume is ten times that in the sibling species, P. dumerilii, mainly due to increased yolk content. The timing and spatial pattern of cleavage were observed from first cleavage to the 62-cell stage. Volumes of the blastomeres, their nuclei, their yolk-free cytoplasm and their yolk were determined from serial sections up to the 29-cell stage. In the P. massiliensis embryo, cell cycles are on average 3.7 times longer than in P. dumerilii; volume proportions among the blastomeres also differ and the macromeres containing the bulk of yolk are particularly large, but otherwise the cleavage patterns, differential segregation of yolk and yolk-free cytoplasm, and the histogenetic fates of the blastomeres are the same as in P. dumerilii. This equivalence of cell lineage and of cytoplasmic segregation mechanisms in both species, maintained in spite of the different appearance of the embryos, suggests functional importance of and selective constraint on these developmental features. The relatively accelerated divisions of the 2d cell line in P. massiliensis may be interpreted as the precocious development of cell lines which give rise to adult structures. Several structures, obviously functional in developing P. dumerilii, have lost their function in P. massiliensis: the egg contains few cortical granules, giving rise to only a moderate egg jelly layer in the zygote; prototroch cells develop cilia, but the heavy embryo is unable to swim; the larva develops three pairs of parapodia but, unlike the corresponding stage in P. dumerilii, is not capable of coordinate locomotion. This loss of motility is related to the brooding habit of the species developing inside the parental tube and is explained as the result of a switch from pelagic to benthic, protected reproduction in P. massiliensis.
