Effects of crowding, food deprivation, and type of cereal diet upon flight initiation, development, body weight, lipid content, and fatty acid composition of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), were studied in two field strains and one laboratory strain. Beetles of all strains reared under crowded conditions had significantly higher flight initiation than beetles reared on isolated kernels (uncrowded). Regardless of degree of crowding, flight initiation increased with the period of food deprivation up to a maximum at 24 h, after which flight initiation declined. Body weight and lipid content decreased as the food deprivation period increased, whereas fatty acid composition was not significantly affected by food deprivation. Beetles from a field strain collected in 1995 had higher flight initiation and increased lipid content compared with beetles from the laboratory strain. However, beetles from the laboratory strain were larger, developed faster, and were more fecund than beetles from this field strain. The cereal diet on which beetles were reared also had a significant effect on flight initiation, lipid content, and fatty acid composition. Beetles reared on whole rice and wheat produced adults with higher flight initiation, higher lipid content, and higher oleic acid concentration than beetles reared on whole corn and sorghum. 相似文献

We examined the effects of different processing methods on the nutritional composition and antioxidant activity of mealworms. After processing with nine methods, we calculated the contents of protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate, minerals (P, Ca, K, Fe, Na), vitamin B group (B1, B2, B3), moisture, and calories. When processed by freeze drying among freeze drying, hot air drying, oven broiling, roasting, pan frying, deep frying, boiling, steaming, and microwaving, the contents of protein, some minerals, and vitamins were the highest. The content of total minerals was lowest after deep frying, and those of vitamin B1 and B3 were the lowest after microwaving. Antioxidant activity was then evaluated using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays. DPPH assays showed that microwaving, freeze drying, deep frying, steaming, boiling, and oven broiling of mealworms yielded scavenging activities of 20.9–29.0% at 2,000 μg/mL, which was similar to the activity level (22.7–33.2%) of 40–60 μM tocopherol. ABTS assays confirmed that only freeze‐dried mealworms at 2,000 μg/mL exhibited higher activity than 10 μM tocopherol. The energetic definition of fitness predicts that natural selection will maximize the residual energy available for growth and reproduction suggesting that energy metabolism might be a target of selection. In this experimental study, we investigated whether female and male yellow mealworm beetles, Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), differ in their hiding behaviour, individual response latency time, and duration of immobility to treatments mimicking an approaching predation threat. We experimentally tested whether consistently repeatable anti‐predatory responses and resting metabolic rates (RMR) correlated with survival rates of individuals exposed to a nocturnal predator, the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout) (Rodentia: Muridae). Resting metabolic rate was part of a syndrome involving anti‐predator behaviour. Individuals with lower RMR concealed themselves against predators in substrate more successfully than individuals with higher RMR, and hiding was associated with longer periods of immobility. Ultimately, mortality was higher in the high‐RMR beetles compared to the low‐RMR beetles. Our results provide direct evidence of natural selection against mobility, i.e., for reduced RMR in T. molitor beetles. 相似文献

Abstract The potential of spinosad as a grain protectant for the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica , was investigated in a silo-scale trial on wheat stored in Victoria, Australia. Rhyzopertha dominica is a serious pest of stored grain, and its resistance to protectants and the fumigant phosphine is becoming more common. This trial follows earlier laboratory research showing that spinosad may be a useful pest management option for this species. Wheat (300 t) from the 2005 harvest was treated with spinosad 0.96 mg/kg plus chlorpyrifos-methyl 10 mg/kg in March 2006, and samples were collected at intervals during 7.5 month storage to determine efficacy and residues in wheat and milling fractions. Chlorpyrifos-methyl is already registered in Australia for control of several other pest species, and its low potency against R. dominica was confirmed in laboratory-treated wheat. Grain moisture content was stable at about 10%, but grain temperature ranged from 29.3°C in March to 14.0°C in August. Bioassays of all treated wheat samples over 7.5 months resulted in 100% adult mortality after 2 weeks exposure and no live progeny were produced. In addition, no live grain insects were detected during outload sampling after a 9 month storage. Spinosad and chlorpyrifos-methyl residues tended to decline during storage, and residues were higher in the bran layer than in either wholemeal or white flour. The contribution of Na+ ions to the nonsynaptic electrogenesis was studied in the larval muscle fibers of mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, using currentclamp and voltage-clamp techniques. Na-dependent graded responses were generated by depolarizing current stimuli in Ca2+-free solutions. These responses were insensitive to tetrodotoxin and were blocked by Co2+. Large inward-going currents were elicited by step depolarizations in Ca2+-free solutions under voltage-clamp conditions. The inward currents were totally eliminated by removal of Na+ from the bathing solution. These results indicate that the calcium channel of mealworm muscle is permeable to Na+. 相似文献

For a number of decades, the lesser white-fronted goose (Anser erythropus) has been almost-absent from the Fennoscandian fauna and has a current population size of only about 60 breeding pairs, with
fewer than 10 pairs in Sweden. During the period 1981–1991 more than 200 young have been reintroduced in northern Sweden.
However, the origin and possible relatedness of lesser white-fronted individuals were unknown when the breeding program started.
We have used DNA fingerprinting to assess the similarity of 18 individuals, i.e., the entire captive population used for breeding
in 1991 and about 60% of the captive population used in 1981–1991. Minisatellite probe 33.15 provided an index for an average
similarity of 0.39 between the mates of the 12 breeding pairs used for producing offspring for reintroduction. This is a higher
similarity than in natural populations of birds in general but lower than in populations that have passed through serious
population bottlenecks. Individuals originating from different breeders are more dissimilar than those from the same breeder.
However, the close relationships (similarity, 0.5–0.6) found in a group of five individuals from different breeders show that
selecting individuals from different breeding groups is not sufficient to prevent mating between closely related individuals. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In the natural resource and wildlife profession, we face difficulties in the production, diffusion, and transfer of rigorously tested science, especially when facing entrenched management paradigms. We present 3 case studies to illustrate the challenges in changing entrenched management paradigms for endangered species. Here we examine specifically what factors helped or hindered the adoption of management practices through the theoretical framework developed for the dissemination of technologies. An examination of 3 case studies suggests that active communication and advocacy of scientific findings, along with simple, visible results, will aid researchers in the acceptance and adoption of their research. Management agencies that increase openness and communication with outside experts, reduce bureaucratic procedures, and localize decision making increase the likelihood that new scientific ideas will be adopted by the agency. We also suggest adaptive resource management as a strategy for endangered species management may foster many of the characteristics that aid in the adoption of scientific ideas into management activities. 相似文献
