Parents should bias sex allocation toward offspring of the sex most likely to provide higher fitness returns. Trivers and Willard proposed that for polygynous mammals, females should adjust sex‐ratio at conception or bias allocation of resources toward the most profitable sex, according to their own body condition. However, the possibility that mammalian fathers may influence sex allocation has seldom been considered. Here, we show that the probability of having a son increased from 0.31 to 0.60 with sire reproductive success in wild bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Furthermore, our results suggest that females fertilized by relatively unsuccessful sires allocated more energy during lactation to daughters than to sons, while the opposite occurred for females fertilized by successful sires. The pattern of sex‐biased offspring production appears adaptive because paternal reproductive success reduced the fitness of daughters and increased the average annual weaning success of sons, independently of maternal allocation to the offspring. Our results illustrate that sex allocation can be driven by paternal phenotype, with profound influences on the strength of sexual selection and on conflicts of interest between parents. 相似文献

Functional variability among human clones of induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) remains a limitation in assembling high‐quality biorepositories. Beyond inter‐person variability, the root cause of intra‐person variability remains unknown. Mitochondria guide the required transition from oxidative to glycolytic metabolism in nuclear reprogramming. Moreover, mitochondria have their own genome (mitochondrial DNA [mtDNA]). Herein, we performed mtDNA next‐generation sequencing (NGS) on 84 hiPSC clones derived from a cohort of 19 individuals, including mitochondrial and non‐mitochondrial patients. The analysis of mtDNA variants showed that low levels of potentially pathogenic mutations in the original fibroblasts are revealed through nuclear reprogramming, generating mutant hiPSCs with a detrimental effect in their differentiated progeny. Specifically, hiPSC‐derived cardiomyocytes with expanded mtDNA mutations non‐related with any described human disease, showed impaired mitochondrial respiration, being a potential cause of intra‐person hiPSC variability. We propose mtDNA NGS as a new selection criterion to ensure hiPSC quality for drug discovery and regenerative medicine. 相似文献

Speciation of arsenic and selenium was carried out on water samples taken from rivers used as water intake points in the vicinity
of landfill areas used for land-based waste disposal system. Leachates from these landfill areas may contaminate the river
water through underground seepage or overflowing, especially after a heavy downpour. Preconcentration of the chemical species
was done using a mixture of ammonium pyrrolidinethiocarbamate-chloroform (APDTC-CHCl3). Because only the reduced forms of both arsenic and selenium species could be extracted by the preconcentrating mixture,
suitable reducing agents such as 25% sodium thiosulfate for As(III) and 6M HCl for Se(IV) were used throughout the studies.
Care was taken to exclude the interfering elements such as the alkali and alkali earth metals from the inorganic arsenic and
selenium species by introducing 12% EDTA solution as the masking agent. The extracted mixture was irradiated in a thermal
neutron flux of 4 × 1012/cm/s from a TRIGA Mk.II reactor at the Malaysia Institute of Nuclear Technology Research (MINT). Gamma rays of 559 keV and
297 keV from76As and75Se, respectively, were used in the quantitative determination of the inorganic species. Mixed standards of As(III) and Se(IV)
used in the percentage efficiency procedure were prepared from salts of Analar grade. The water quality evaluation was viewed
from the ratio of the inorganic species present. 相似文献

Since 1992, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been promoting studies of air pollution using a standard design
of air sampler that provides separation on filters into two size fractions with cutoffs of 2.5 and 10 Μm (approximately).
These are the size ranges presently considered to have the most important health consequences. Such filter samples are highly
amenable to analysis using nuclear and related techniques. After reviewing some of the health effects of airborne particulate
matter and current air quality standards and guidelines, this article provides an overview of current and recent IAEA programs
in this area, which involve collaborative activities with participants in more than 40 countries. 相似文献

An important environmental factor determining both phytoplankton and zooplankton community composition is lake depth and
thermal stratification. However, there is little information on how the interaction between zooplankton grazers and their
phytoplankton food changes along an environmental gradient of lake depth. We contrasted resource availability for daphniid
zooplankton populations living in two shallow, unstratified lakes and in two deep, stratified lakes using a novel growth bioassay.
Stratified lakes had consistently lower resource richness than shallow unstratified lakes. To test whether resources were
important in explaining differences in daphniid composition of shallow and deep lakes, we performed reciprocal transplant
experiments. We raised daphniids typical of shallow (Ceriodaphnia reticulata) and deep (Daphnia dentifera) lakes in the resources from replicate shallow and deep lakes and monitored survival and reproduction. The two species exhibited
a performance trade-off, measured by life table r and R
0, across a gradient in natural resource richness. D. dentifera had higher relative fitness than C. reticulata when raised in the poorest resource environment from a deep lake. However, under richer resource conditions typical of shallow
lakes, C. reticulata outperformed D. dentifera. We further created a gradient in natural resource quantity (by dilution) to test whether this trade-off in species relative
fitness involved aspects of resource quality. No trade-off in species performance was evident across the dilution gradient,
indicating that resource quality was important to the trade-off. We conclude that shifts in daphniid species composition along
a gradient of lake depth involve an adaptive trade-off in ability to exploit rich versus poor resource quality.

Foraging strategies and growth inhibition in five daphnids feeding on mixtures of a toxic cyanobacterium and a green alga 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7

1. Laboratory experiments were used to study the feeding, growth and reproduction of five daphnids in mixtures of a toxic cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, and a green alga, Scenedesmus acutus. The mixtures included 0%, 20%, 50%, 80% and 100% Microcystis with a total food concentration of 0.5 mg C L??1 in each treatment. The feeding rate was measured after 1 and 24 h of acclimatization to the mixtures. 2. Toxic Microcystis inhibited feeding in all the species, but they exhibited an unexpected diversity and complexity in the pattern of feeding inhibition. Daphnia magna exhibited the strongest inhibition of feeding after 1 h of exposure to toxic food, but had substantially recovered after 24 h in the same mixtures. This pattern of inhibition and recovery may balance the benefits of reduced ingestion of toxin with the disadvantage of a reduced energy intake. 3. All five daphnids grew quickly in the Scenedesmus control, whereas growth and reproduction declined with an increasing proportion of the toxic alga in the diet. Daphnia pulicaria showed the least inhibition of growth and reproduction, D. pulex showed the strongest inhibition and the three remaining species exhibited intermediate sensitivity. 4. Estimates of gross growth efficiency (GGE; growth/ingestion) provided a means for discriminating between the effects of feeding inhibition and direct toxicity on zooplankton growth. Daphnia pulex exhibited a sharp decline in GGE, suggesting that growth inhibition was a result of both feeding inhibition and direct toxicity. In contrast, D. magna exhibited a nearly constant GGE, indicating that feeding inhibition accounted for its decline in growth. However, two Daphnia species (i.e. D. pulicaria and D. galeata) exhibited improbable increases in GGE with toxic cyanobacteria, suggesting that their feeding rates were underestimated. Growth assays with sensitive and resistant zooplankton species are proposed for testing the potential impacts toxic cyanobacteria in lakes. 相似文献

Metaphycus flavus (Howard) and M. stanleyi Compere (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) are currently being screened for use as augmentative biological control agents of citrus-infesting soft scales (Homoptera: Coccidae). Two factors were investigated, host quality-dependent sex allocation and local mate competition, which likely influence these parasitoid's sex allocation strategies and are therefore of interest for their mass-rearing. The results of these studies suggested that, under the mass-rearing protocol that is envisioned for these parasitoids, offspring sex ratios in both M. flavus and M. stanleyi are dominated by host quality (= size) influences, but not by interactions with other females. These results indicated that host size strongly influences offspring sex ratios and brood sizes; larger hosts led to more female offspring and larger broods. In contrast, increasing the number of parental females did not lead to fewer female offspring as expected under local mate competition. Additionally, within-brood sex ratios did not vary with brood size; this result is inconsistent with expected sex ratios due to local mate competition. Other results also indicated that host quality was a dominant influence on M. flavus' and M. stanleyi's sex ratios. Larger hosts led to a larger size in the emerging wasps, and larger wasps had greater egg loads and lived longer than smaller wasps. However, wasp longevity, and the influence of wasp size on longevity were mediated by a wasp's diet. Metaphycus flavus females lived the longest when they had access to hosts, honey, and water, followed by honey and water, and shortest when they had access to water alone; M. stanleyi females lived longest with honey and water, followed by hosts, honey, and water, and shortest with water alone. Greater wasp size led to greater longevity in females only when they had access to food (honey, or hosts and honey). Finally, other results suggested that both M. flavus and M. stanleyi are facultatively gregarious. Wasp size did not decrease with brood size as expected under superparasitism. Overall, the results of these studies suggested that holding newly emerged females of both M. flavus and M. stanleyi for several days in the presence of an appropriate food source before field release could enhance a female's performance as an augmentative biological control agent. It increases their initial life expectancy following release, and maximizes the females' egg load (both Metaphycus species) and resources for replacing oviposited eggs (M. flavus only). 相似文献

Phytophagous insects which feed on the leaves of herbaceous host plants have to adapt their life histories to the fact that protein nitrogen is usually highest in growing tissues in spring. We monitored field populations of larvae and adults of three chrysomelid species (Galeruca tanaceti (L.) (main host Achillea millefolium (L.) Yarrow), Cassida rubiginosa (Mueller) (main host Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) and Oreina luctuosa (Suffrian) (host Centaurea scabiosa (L.)) together with the amount of protein nitrogen of their food resources and host plant biomass. As expected, the development of host quality, measured as concentration of protein nitrogen, and host plant biomass showed inverse trends during the season. The euryphagous G. tanaceti attacks Achillea early and profits from high nitrogen concentrations in the leaves. Occasional overexploitations of local populations of Achillea are compensated by the capacity to move to other host species. In C. rubiginosa, a species with a host range restricted to the Cardueae, the main larval feeding activity is postponed to a period when the nitrogen content of the host leaves had dropped to 50% of its initial value, but when host plant biomass had increased by 30%. In the monophagous O. luctuosa the larval development is synchronized with a still later phase of host phenology, at which the nitrogen content is below 50% but plant biomass has reached its maximum. There seem to be selection factors, which oppose the use of high quality food in spring and which force the latter two species to postpone their larval development to a later time in the year. This could be caused by numerous factors like, for example, mean daytime temperature. Later in the season the larvae have to cope with the low quality of their host plants. They have, however, the advantage of large quantities of food available.A laboratory study with adults and mature larvae of O. luctuosa shows that this species can overcome low levels of protein nitrogen either by selecting younger leaves with higher nitrogen concentrations or by increasing the daily food consumption rate (RCR) on leaves with a low level of nitrogen and by a prolongation of the feeding period. In this way the larvae compensate the effect of lower daily growth rates (RGR) and a lower food conversion index (ECI) on poor food quality: Regardless of the level of protein nitrogen there was no statistically significant difference in total gain of weight during the third-instar feeding period and in the weight at the end of the third larval stage. The three investigated chrysomelids show that there exists a broad spectrum of adaptations to overcome the dilemma of variable food quality. 相似文献
