Summary A re-examination of earlier NPK fertilization experiments in Douglas fir stands on sandy soils shows the effects of high nitrogen input by air pollution during the last 10–15 years on plant nutrition at these sites. In 1960, experimental plots showed a positive growth reaction to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilization. All suffered from severe phosphorus deficiency in 1984, low phosphorus in the needles was invariably accompanied by a high nitrogen content, with all N/P ratios between 20 and 30. The same conclusion emerges from an independent investigation of nutrient status of a selection of Douglas fir stands. Hence, if stand productivity and a balanced nutrient status of the trees is to be maintained, the increase in atmospheric input of nitrogen calls for supplementary fertilization. Given the current N/P ratios in the needles, a positive growth response to phosphorus fertilization is to be expected.  相似文献

The defective kernel (dek) mutants of maize are altered in both their embryo and endosperm development. Earlier studies have indicated that some of the dek mutants are unable to form shoot apical meristems or leaf primoirda. We have examined three embryo lethal dek mutants of this type, ptd*-1130, cp*-1418, and bno*-747B, to obtain a developmental profile for each. Allelism tests show that these three mutants are not allelic. Embryos were examined in early, mid-, and late kernel development as well as at kernel maturity by dissection and sectioning procedures and also at kernel maturity by scanning electron microscopy. All three mutants lag behind normal embryos in their rate of development. Embryos of ptd*-1130 reached the transition stage by early kernel development and progressed no further but underwent cell enlargement and necrosis during late kernel development. Embryos of cp*-1418 reached an early coleoptilar stage by midkernel development. They subsequently increased in size but did not form any leaf primordia. At kernel maturity, they no longer had a shoot apical meristem but often had a well formed root meristem. They appeared to remain healthy and did not become necrotic. Embryos of bno*747B reached the early coleoptilar stage by early kernel development but progressed no further. By kernel maturity, they had grown into masses of irregularly shaped embryonic tissue that no longer resembled any normal embryo stage but were not necrotic. None of these three mutants responded to attempts to support continued embryo development when cultured, but all three mutants formed callus on N6 and MS media supplemented with 2,4-D. These results indicate that these mutants are all uniformly blocked at specific stages early in embryonic development, have different subsequent developmental fates, and represent three different genes performing unique functions that are essential for embryogenesis.  相似文献

The effects of adequate and restricted dietary protein and vitamin A on responses to infections by Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and N. brasiliensis plus Eimeria nieshulzi were determined in growing Sprague-Dawley rats. Infected rats experienced anorexia followed by a rebound in consumption that compensated for weight losses during anorexia. On certain days, reductions in the urinary/fecal nitrogen ratio, fecal and absorbed nitrogen, and apparent nitrogen and dry matter digestibilities occurred with the combined infections but not with those by nematodes alone. Effects of different levels of vitamin A were expressed only as an increase in nitrogen absorption occurring during the post-anoretic increase in appetite found with infected rats and in rats restricted in protein but receiving the higher level of the vitamin. Protein level was the most significant treatment effect: rats on high protein performed significantly better than those on low, regardless of the level of the other experimental variables.  相似文献

Raisins were a better source of carbohydrate than sucrose for reproduction by autogenous Culex pipiens. A blood meal increased the number of eggs per raft from 49 autogenously to 114. Eggs of aposymbiotic females produced autogenously did not hatch, but 34% of the eggs were viable if the mosquitoes fed on chickens. With repeated blood meals the number of eggs per raft and the rate of embryonation and hatching declined in each successive gonotrophic cycle. In about 14 of the unhatched eggs of normal females there were no fully developed embryos, while many more of the unhatched eggs of aposymbiotic females contained no evidence of embryonic development. After the fifth blood meal, neither normal nor aposymbiotic insects oviposited. The ovaries of the nulliparous females contained approximately 10% of the potential number of mature terminal oocytes. Proximally in the ovarioles there were dilatations and coiled tracheoles indicating egg resorption. There were fewer parous follicles in aposymbiotic than in normal females. Larval rearing water, i.e., infusion in which larvae had been reared, was more attractive than fresh infusion for oviposition by normal, autogenous mosquitoes. The degree of embryonation of the eggs was lower and the hatching success rate was poorer in fresh infusion than in larval rearing water.  相似文献

The contents of alimentary tracts of stomachless phytoplanktivorous fish, including silvercarp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), Esomus danrica thermoicos, and Amblypharyngodon meletinus were investigated microscopically and compared with those of Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus, a fish with stomach).The predominance of detritus in the food and the low efficiency with which phytoplankton is utilized prove, that stomachless fish are not primarily herbivorous. The possibility of omnivorous feeding as an alternative is discussed. These results may contribute to our understanding of the role of filterfeeders in aquaculture and ecosystems.  相似文献

The control of malate metabolism and stimulation of 1-sinapolyglucose: L-malate sinapoyltransferase (SMT) activity in radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus) cotyledons has been studied. The light-induced and nitrate-dependent activity of SMT catalyzes the formation of O-sinapoly-L-malate via 1-O-sinapoyl--D-glucose. When dark-grown radish seedlings, cultivated in quartz sand with nutrient solution containing NO 3 - as the sole N source, were treated with light, SMT activity increased concomitantly with free malate in the cotyledons. This light effect was suppressed in seedlings grown in a culture medium which contained in addition to NO 3 - also NH 4 + . However, treatment with methionine sulfoximine neutralized this ammonium effect, resulting again in both rapid accumulation of malate and rapid increase in SMT activity. When seedlings grown on NO 3 - nitrogen were subsequently supplied with NH 4 + nitrogen, the accumulated level of L-malate rapidly dropped and the SMT increase ceased. The enzyme activity decreased later on, reaching the low activity level of plants which were grown permanently on NO 3 - /NH 4 + -nitrogen. An external supply (vacuum infiltration) of malate to excised cotyledons and intact seedings, grown on NO 3 - /NH 4 + -nitrogen medium, specifically promoted a dose-dependent increase in the activity of SMT. We have compared the ability of shadegrown clones of Solamum dulcamara L. from shade and sun habitats to acclimate to bright light, as a function of nitrogen nutrition before and after transfer to bright light. Leaves of S. dulcamara grown in the shade with 0.6 mM NO 3 - have similar photosynthetic properties as leaves of plants grown with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . When transferred to bright light for 1–2 d the leaves of these plants show substantial photoinhibition which is characterized by about 50% decrease in apparent quantum yield and a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis in air at light saturation. Photoinhibition of leaf photosynthesis is associated with reduction in the variable component of low-temperature fluorescence emission, and with loss of in-vitro electron transport, especially of photosystem II-dependent processes.We find no evidence for ecotypic differentiation in the potential for photosynthetic acclimation among shade and sun clones of S. dulcamara, or of differentiation with respect to nitrogen requirements for acclimation. Recovery from photoinhibition and subsequent acclimation of photosynthesis to bright light only occurs in leaves of plants provided with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . In these, apparent quantum yield is fully restored after 14 d, and photosynthetic acclimation is shown by an increase in light-saturated photosynthesis in air, of light-and CO2-saturated photosynthesis, and of the initial slope of the CO2-response curve. The latter changes are highly correlated with changes in ribulose-bisphosphate-carboxylase activity in vitro. La possibilité de nourrir la punaiseMacrolophus caliginosus Wagner à l'aide de milieux artificiels a été testée. En l'absence de végétal, les témoins nourris avec des ?ufs d'Ephestia kuehniella Zeller ont une survie médiocre et fournisent 33% d'adultes. Avec le meilleur milieu artificiel la survie est comparable à celle des témoins et 21 % d'adultes sont obtenus. Avec ce même milieu, mais en présence de feuille de géranium, la production d'adultes atteint 62%. Les compositions en acides aminés des punaises élevées avec le milieu montrent des écarts inférieurs à 20% par rapport aux témoins. Le développement complet deM. caliginosus nourri à l'aide de milieu artificiel a été obtenu. Le végétal joue un rôle important dans la biologie de ce prédateur.  相似文献

Summary Plants of the cerrado tree species Qualea grandiflora and the annual herb Bidens gardneri were grown from seed in controlled environment rooms at 30/20° C and 12 hour photoperiod. Seedlings were grown in pots or small tubes containing sand and provided with various amounts of mineral solutions based on the formulation of Hoagland and Arnon but with the phosphate content modified in some cases. In a long-term experiment lasting 213 days, plants supplied with full strength Hoagland's solution all died but plants of Qualea given 1/10 strength solution survived, although they grew very slowly. Low relative growth rates (0.008–0.036 d–1) were also a feature of other experiments with Qualea and calculated rates of net assimilation rate gave values of 3–7 mg CO2 dm–2 h–1. Expansion of the photosynthetic surface proceeded slowly and the cotyledons were the main site of photosynthesis for more than 40 days. The low rates of growth occurred despite significant uptake of phosphorus by young plants and in shortterm experiments growth was independent of the amount of phosphate supplied and accumulated. In contrast, the values of R found for plants of Bidens reached 0.24 d–1. Growth of young plants was dependent on the external supply of phosphorus, being reduced when this was low and also when it was very high. Growth of the photosynthetic surface was also much more rapid than for Qualea and also varied with supply of phosphorus. The results are discussed in the context of the occurrence of these species in the Cerrado.  相似文献
