The influence of feeding, egg load and stage of ovarian development on the sexual receptivity of some insect species has been reported. This work investigated the effects of different brewer's yeast concentrations in the diet offered to females of West Indian fruit fly, Anastrepha obliqua, on their sexual receptivity. Wild females were fed on artificial diets containing 2.0 g brewer's yeast per 100 mL of water (low‐yeast diet, LY diet), 6.5 g yeast per 100 mL of water (high‐yeast diet, HY diet) or only sucrose (Su diet) and then placed with the males. Female sexual receptivity tests were carried out in acrylic boxes in the laboratory under controlled conditions (temperature, humidity and light). Females fed on the HY diet were more sexually receptive to male courtship than the other females. Additionally, when fed on the same diet (HY diet), those females with higher egg load were more sexually receptive. The data suggest that the ingestion of a protein source is essential for increasing sexual receptivity and that egg load is the most important factor affecting sexual receptivity of A. obliqua females.  相似文献

Climate change will modify forest pest outbreak characteristics, although there are disagreements regarding the specifics of these changes. A large part of this variability may be attributed to model specifications. As a case study, we developed a consensus model predicting spruce budworm (SBW, Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) outbreak duration using two different predictor data sets and six different correlative methods. The model was used to project outbreak duration and the uncertainty associated with using different data sets and correlative methods (=model‐specification uncertainty) for 2011–2040, 2041–2070 and 2071–2100, according to three forcing scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The consensus model showed very high explanatory power and low bias. The model projected a more important northward shift and decrease in outbreak duration under the RCP 8.5 scenario. However, variation in single‐model projections increases with time, making future projections highly uncertain. Notably, the magnitude of the shifts in northward expansion, overall outbreak duration and the patterns of outbreaks duration at the southern edge were highly variable according to the predictor data set and correlative method used. We also demonstrated that variation in forcing scenarios contributed only slightly to the uncertainty of model projections compared with the two sources of model‐specification uncertainty. Our approach helped to quantify model‐specification uncertainty in future forest pest outbreak characteristics. It may contribute to sounder decision‐making by acknowledging the limits of the projections and help to identify areas where model‐specification uncertainty is high. As such, we further stress that this uncertainty should be strongly considered when making forest management plans, notably by adopting adaptive management strategies so as to reduce future risks.  相似文献

Exotic forest insects and their symbionts pose an increasing threat to forest health. This is apparently true for the red turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus valens), which was unintentionally introduced to China, where the beetle has killed millions of healthy native pine trees. Previous population genetics studies that used cytochrome oxidase I as a marker concluded that the source of D. valens in China was western North America. In contrast, surveys of fungi associated with D. valens demonstrated that more fungal species are shared between China and eastern North America than between China and western North America, suggesting that the source population of D. valens could be eastern North America. In this study, we used microsatellite markers to determine population structure of D. valens in North America as well as the source population of the beetle in China. The analyses revealed that four genetically distinct populations (herein named the West, Central, Northeast and Mexico) represent the native range of D. valens. Clustering analyses and a simulation‐based approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) approach supported the hypothesis that western North America is the source of the invasive D. valens population. This study provides a demonstration of non‐congruence between patterns inferred by studies on population genetics and symbiont assemblages in an invasive bark beetle.  相似文献

Plants respond locally and systemically to herbivore attack. Most of the research conducted on plant–herbivore relationships at element and molecular levels have focused on the elemental composition or/and certain molecular compounds or specific families of defence metabolites showing that herbivores tend to select plant individuals or species with higher nutrient concentrations and avoid those with higher levels of defence compounds. We performed stoichiometric and metabolomics, both local and systemic, analyses in two subspecies of Pinus sylvestris under attack from caterpillars of the pine processionary moth, an important pest in the Mediterranean Basin. Both pine subspecies responded locally to folivory mainly by increasing relative concentrations of terpenes and some phenolics. Systemic responses differed between pine subspecies, and most of the metabolites presented intermediate concentrations between those of the affected parts and unattacked trees. Our results support the hypothesis that foliar nutrient concentrations are not a key factor for plant selection by adult female processionary moths for oviposition, since folivory was not associated with any of the elements analysed. Phenolic compounds generally did not increase in the attacked trees, questioning the suggestion of induction of phenolics following folivory attack and the anti‐feeding properties of phenolics. Herbivory attack produced a general systemic shift in pines, in both primary and secondary metabolism, which was less intense and chemically different from the local responses. Local pine responses were similar between pine subspecies, while systemic responses were more distant.  相似文献

Transitions between animal and wind pollination have occurred in many lineages and have been linked to various floral modifications, but these have seldom been assessed in a phylogenetic framework. In the dioecious genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae), transitions from insect to wind pollination have occurred at least four times. Using analyses that controlled for relatedness among Leucadendron species, we investigated how these transitions shaped the evolution of floral structural and signaling traits, including the degree of sexual dimorphism in these traits. Pollen grains of wind‐pollinated species were found to be smaller, more numerous, and dispersed more efficiently in wind than were those of insect‐pollinated species. Wind‐pollinated species also exhibited a reduction in spectral contrast between showy subtending leaves and background foliage, reduced volatile emissions, and a greater degree of sexual dimorphism in color and scent. Uniovulate flowers and inflorescence condensation are conserved ancestral features in Leucadendron and likely served as exaptations in shifts to wind pollination. These results offer insights into the key modifications of male and female floral traits involved in transitions between insect and wind pollination.  相似文献

Mechanoreceptor organs occur in great diversity in insect legs. This study investigates sensory organs in the leg of atympanate cave crickets (Troglophilus neglectus KRAUSS, 1879) by neuronal tracing. Previously, the subgenual and the intermediate organs were recognised in the subgenual organ complex, lacking the tympanal membranes present for example in the tibial hearing organs of Gryllidae and Tettigoniidae. We document the presence of the accessory organ in T. neglectus. This scolopidial organ is located in the posterior tibia close to the subgenual organ and can be identified by position, innervation and orientation of the dendrites of sensory neurons. The main motor nerve in the leg innervates a part of the subgenual organ and the accessory organ. The dendrites of sensory neurons in the accessory organ are characteristically bent in proximo‐dorsal direction, while the subgenual organ dendrites run distally along the longitudinal axis of the leg. The accessory organ contains 6–10 scolopidial sensilla, and no differences in neuroanatomy occur between the three thoracic leg pairs. Hence, the subgenual organ complex in cave crickets is more complex than previously known. The wider taxonomic distribution of the accessory scolopidial organ among orthopteroid insects is inconsistent, indicating its repeated losses or convergent evolution.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were carried out to evaluate the insecticidal effect of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) germinated conidia, a commercial formulation of diatomaceous earth and a liquid formulation of spinosad, applied alone or in all possible combinations on wheat, against adults of the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Diatomaceous earth was applied at one (200 ppm), the fungus at two (100 and 300 ppm) and spinosad at three (0.01, 0.1 and 0.5 ppm) dose rates, whereas all combinations of two or three of the insecticide concentrations were also tested. Insect mortality was determined after 2, 7 and 14 d of exposure. The simultaneous use of B. bassiana germinated conidia with diatomaceous earth notably increased mortality of T. confusum adults by sixfold 7 d after exposure, as compared with either B. bassiana or diatomaceous earth alone. When diatomaceous earth and spinosad were combined, diatomaceous earth did not increase the efficacy of spinosad. In general, the combination of all three agents did not differ from either the application of the agents tested alone, or their binary combinations, in most treatments examined.  相似文献
