Abstract. The nearest‐neighbour technique is used to infer competition and facilitation between the three most abundant species in a semi‐arid region of western South Africa. Relationships among the shrubs Leipoldtia schultzei and Ruschia robusta, which are leaf‐succulent members of the Mesembryanthemaceae (‘mesembs’) and Hirpicium alienatum a non‐succulent Asteraceae, were compared on two adjacent sites with different histories of browsing intensity. Competition was more prevalent and more important than facilitation. The only evidence for facilitation was found at the heavily‐browsed site where the palatable Hirpicium was larger under the unpalatable Leipoldtia. Generally the prevalence and importance of competition was reduced at the heavily‐browsed site. Strong evidence was obtained for intraspecific competition in each of the three species; also, competition was evident between the two mesembs, where Leipoldtia was competitively dominant over Ruschia, although neither species inhibited Hirpicium. Minimal competition between the mesembs and the asteraceous shrub was interpreted in terms of differentiation in rooting depth, and competition within the mesembs, in terms of overlap in rooting depth. The mesembs had the bulk of their roots in the top 5 cm of soil, while the asteraceous shrub had the bulk of its roots, and all its fine roots, at greater depths. The shallow‐rooted morphology of the mesembs is well adapted to utilize small rainfall events, which occur frequently in the Succulent Karoo, and do not penetrate the soil deeply. Modifications of existing methods are applied for analysing nearest‐neighbour interactions.  相似文献

Saturation and Utilization of Nitrate Pools in Pea and Sugar Beet Leaves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The critical periods in the saturation of pea and sugar beet leaves with nitrate absorbed by roots were discriminated. In peas, during the first 14 h, all nitrate penetrating leaf cells was concentrated in the cytosol (metabolic pool). During the second period (14–62 h), nitrate began to flow into the vacuole (storage pool), and the filling of the metabolic pool continued. Metabolic pool was saturated by the end of this period (62 h). During the third period (62–110 h), further nitrate accumulation in the cell occurred because of expanding of the storage pool. Its saturation (similarly as total cell saturation) commenced 86 h after the start of nitrate uptake. In sugar beet leaves, both metabolic and storage nitrate pools were saturated by the end of the first period (14 h), and the sizes of these pools did not change during the second period (14–86 h). When pea plants were transferred to the nitrate-free medium, nitrate efflux began from the storage pool until its complete exhausting after 3 days. In sugar beet leaves, nitrate was still present in the storage pool 4 days after plant transfer to the nitrate-free medium. In both crops, nitrate export from the storage pool was aimed at the maintenance of the optimum nitrate concentration in the metabolic pool and, thus, at the maintenance of nitrate reductase activity. A functional diversity of nitrate compartmentation in the cells of various plant species is discussed.  相似文献

Alcohol-extractable, hydrophobic zein proteins contaminate starch granule surfaces and can be removed by enzymatic digestion with thermolysin. The goal of this research was to find practical alternatives to thermolysin that might be used during the corn wet-milling process. All of the commercial thermostable alkaline proteases studied (SP 709, Neutrase, and Spezyme FAN) removed the zein proteins from various types of cornstarch, as demonstrated by the lack of protein bands below 30 kDa under the reducing conditions of SDS-PAGE gel. Each enzyme removed the zein proteins as effectively as thermolysin removed them. However, the removal of the zein protein did not reduce the quantity of free fatty acids associated with the starch. Semiempirical and ab initio theoretical methods have been used to investigate molecular structures of the chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers RC(=O)XH (chalcogenol acid) and RC(=X)OH (chalcogenon acid). A recent experimental report suggests that the chalcogenon isomers, although less stable at room temperature, predominate at low temperature in polar solvents and that there is only a small barrier to isomerization between the isomers. Theoretical calculations have been used to locate minimum energy structures of chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers and to calculate energy differences between pairs of isomers. Carboxylic acids are well known to dimerize, especially in the gas phase and in non-polar solvents. We have, therefore, also calculated energies of dimerization of the chalcogen-substituted acids by optimizing the geometries of the symmetric dimers. We note that the PM3 level of theory is only qualitatively correct for sulfur- and selenium-containing species but fails even qualitatively for the tellurium-containing compounds. Ab initio results confirm the experimental observations and provide good estimates of both isomerization and dimerization energies. We conclude that for many functional groups with tautomers RC(=X)YH and RC(=Y)XH, the more acidic tautomer is the one with the acid proton on the smaller, more electronegative atom, although in many cases this may not be the more stable tautomer.Electronic Supplementary Material available.  相似文献

As sessile organisms, plants must adapt to their environment. One approach toward understanding this adaptation is to investigate environmental regulation of gene expression. Our focus is on the environmental regulation of EARLI1, which is activated by cold and long‐day photoperiods. Cold activation of EARLI1 in short‐day photoperiods is slow, requiring several hours at 4 °C to detect an increase in mRNA abundance. EARLI1 is not efficiently cold‐activated in etiolated seedlings, suggesting that photomorphogenesis is necessary for its cold activation. Cold activation of EARLI1 is inhibited in the presence of the calcium channel blocker lanthanum chloride or the calcium chelator EGTA. Addition of the calcium ionophore Bay K8644 results in cold‐independent activation of EARLI1. These data suggest that EARLI1 is not an immediate target of the cold response, and that calcium flux affects its expression. EARLI1 is a putative secreted protein and has motifs found in lipid transfer proteins. Over‐expression of EARLI1 in transgenic plants results in reduced electrolyte leakage during freezing damage, suggesting that EARLI1 may affect membrane or cell wall stability in response to low temperature stress.  相似文献

The kinetics of the electrostatically induced phase transition of dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid bilayers was followed using the stopped-flow technique. The phase transition was triggered by a fast change in the pH or the magnesium ion concentration and followed by recording the time dependence of the absorbance. When the phase transition was induced by a pH jump the time course of the absorbance could be described by two exponentials, their time constants displaying the for cooperative processes characteristic maximum at the transition midpoint. The time constants are in the 10 and 100 ms range for the H+ triggered transition from the fluid to the ordered state. A third slower process shows no appreciable temperature dependence and is probably caused by vesicle aggregation. For the OH--induced transition fron the ordered to the fluid state the time constants are in the 100 and 1000 ms range. The fluid-ordered transition could also be triggered by addition of magnesium ions. Of the several observed processes only the fastest in the 10–100 ms time range could definitely be assigned to the fluid-ordered transition while the others are due to aggregation phenomena. The experimental data were compared with results obtained from pressure jump experiments and could be interpreted on the basis of theories for non-equilibrium relaxation.  相似文献

Abstract

The stability of clathrate hydrates encaging highly polar guests has been investigated in order to explain the experimental observation that some amines form clathrate hydrates but alcohols act as inhibitor to hydrate formation. We choose methylamine and methanol as guest species and examine the stable structure, at which the total potential energy has a minimum value. At the local minima of those two hydrates, the potential energies of water-water and guest-water, and their hydrogen bonded networks are compared. It is found that methanol does not retain the host lattice structure, while the host-network structure is kept in the presence of methylamine. It is shown that the difference in the magnitude of the partial charge on the hydrogen atom between the hydroxyl and amino groups plays a much more significant role on the stability of both clathrate hydrates than the difference in molecular geometry. This is supported from the result of a methylamine-like model that has the same partial charges on the atoms in the hydrophilic site as methanol.  相似文献
