Tsetse flies Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are among the major vectors of sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis‐HAT) and nagana (African Animal Trypanosomiasis – AAT) in West Africa. Both riparian species occur sympatrically in gallery forests of south west Burkina Faso, but little is known of their interspecies relationships although different authors think there may be some competition between them. The aim of this study was to check if sympatric species have different strategies when approaching a host. A man placed in a sticky cube (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) and a sticky black‐blue‐black target (1 m × 1 m) were used to capture tsetse along the Comoe river banks in a Latin Square design. The number and the height at which tsetse were caught by each capture method were recorded according to species and sex. Glossina p. gambiensis was more attracted to human bait than to the target, but both species were captured at a significantly higher height on the target compared with the human bait (P < 0.05). No significant difference in heights was found between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis captured on targets (33 and 35 cm, respectively, P > 0.05). However, catches on human bait showed a significant difference in height between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis (22.5 and 30.6 cm, respectively, P < 0.001). This study showed that these sympatric species had different attack behaviours to humans, which is not the case with the target. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to compare the effectiveness of chemical meat bait traps and basic meat bait traps for collecting adult flies. Bait traps used to collect these species can be damaged by anthropogenic or environmental effects. In this study, chemical meat bait traps and basic meat bait traps were hung from trees in the garden of the Ankara University Forensic Sciences Institute. This activity was carried out on the first Monday of each month for nine months. During the study, 1894 specimens were collected. Of all these species, 1787 (94.35%) were obtained from chemical meat bait traps (CMBTs), while 107 (5.65%) were obtained from basic meat bait traps (BMBTs). To determine the diversity of species in CMBT and BMBT sample groups in our study, Shannon Wiener and Simpson diversity and dominance indices were used. Shannon Evenness Index was calculated to determine the relationship between species community‐density. Cluster analysis provided a summary of the similarity in species composition of different regions. The CMBT and BMBT trap groups similarity/dissimilarity feature was checked using Bray–Curtis cluster analysis. The number of species collected from CMBTs was considerably higher than in BMBTs. The results of this study will help researchers to save time. In addition, it should be kept in mind that thiamethoxam is harmful to the environment when it contaminates sources of water.  相似文献

Nemerteans are predators of a wide variety of animals, but little is known of their role as prey for other animals. The presence of toxins in the tissues and secretions of these worms has led to the assumption usually suggested that they are ingested only rarely. However, analysis of a Food Habits Data Base from the United States National Marine Fisheries Service, compiled for fishes collected in the Atlantic Ocean from the Canadian border to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (1973–1990), showed that nemerteans were recovered from the stomachs of 27 species of fishes in 14 families. They were found in 223 of 26 642 (0.84%) fish stomachs examined in the laboratory, but only in 0.09% of 58 812 fish examined in the field. Among species in the former category, for which 1000 were examined, the winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus(Walbaum), and the yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferruginea (Storer), had the greatest frequency of nemerteans, 71 of 1545 (4.6%) and 33 of 1045 (3.2%), respectively. These nemerteans were identified as Nemertea, Cerebratulus sp. or Micrura sp., but it is likely that they were all of a Cerebratulus-like type. Nemerteans have also been recorded from the guts of eight additional species (including four additional families) of fishes collected from the western Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, eastern Pacific Ocean (Washington, Alaska), North Sea and Indian Ocean off South Africa. The black-bellied plover, Pluvialis squatarola(L.), semipalmated plover, Charadrius semipalmatus Bonapart and the herring gull, Larus argentatus Pontoppidan are the only three species known to feed on nemerteans (Cerebratulus lacteus (Leidy) and Paranemertes peregrina Coe by the black-bellied plover and C. lacteus by the other species). Several species of nemerteans are known to ingest other nemerteans, and several arthropods, a squid, and a few other invertebrates also feed on these worms. On the other hand, careful laboratory studies have shown that some members of the Palaeonemertea, Heteronemertea and Hoplonemertea, when fed to various species of fishes, crustaceans (Astacidea, Anomura, Brachyura and Amphipoda) and a polychaete, were rejected, usually violently. There is a history of using large nemerteans, e.g. Cerebratulus lacteus and Polybrachiorhynchus dayi, as bait by sport fishermen in the United States and South Africa. The incongruity of successfuly using these toxic animals to catch fish is discussed in relation to conclusions on the importance of nemerteans as prey in the marine environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Alien rats have impacted native systems worldwide, yet wildlife managers lack techniques to efficiently monitor for rodent invasions where native rodents are present and to control alien rodents sympatric with native rodents. We tested the ability of vertical bait stations to exclude native rodents in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) appeared able to enter all station sizes, whereas black rats (R. rattus) were excluded from larger stations. The endemic rodents Oryzomys bauri and Nesoryzomys narboroughi were unable to enter bait stations of any size, but N. swarthi entered the smallest station. Differences in climbing technique contributed to the advantage of alien rodents over endemic species. Our technique provides wildlife managers in the Galapagos, and potentially other islands with native rodents, a means for early detection and control of alien rats.  相似文献

Conventional control of leaf‐cutting ants is mainly carried out by application of solid insecticide baits. However, alternative approaches could increase the efficiency of control methods. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that liquid and semi‐solid baits are more readily ingested by leaf‐cutting ants and are therefore more toxic than solid baits. Furthermore, following increased ingestion rates, ants could perform higher frequencies of trophallactic exchanges with their nest mates, thus increasing dispersal rates within the colony. Each of three diets were offered to Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus (Forel) and Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel (both Hymenoptera: Formicidae) for 1 h under laboratory conditions and subsequently crop volumes were quantified. The highest crop volumes for both species were seen when the diet was offered in liquid form, and the lowest crop volumes were observed after offering solid diets. Survival rates of the ants were monitored following addition of the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) to the three diets. The ingestion of liquid and semi‐solid diets + IMI by A. subterraneus resulted in 17 and 6% survival, respectively, whereas these diets caused 100% mortality of A. sexdens. Ingestion of solid diets with IMI resulted in 51% survival of A. subterraneus and 23% survival of Atta workers. Twenty‐three percent of A. subterraneus which had fed on liquid diet carried out trophallactic exchanges, whereas only 10 and 3% of ants carried out trophallaxis when fed on semi‐solid or solid diet, respectively. Lower trophallactic frequencies were observed for A. sexdens, with 13 and 3% of ants that had fed on liquid and semi‐solid diets performing trophallaxis, respectively. The low trophallactic exchange rates following ingestion of solid diets would reduce the dispersal of these compounds throughout the colony. Control strategies using solid baits should be re‐examined in the light of these findings, which indicate the importance of optimizing insecticide ingestion.  相似文献

Toxicity of fipronil to German and American cockroaches   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Topical and oral toxicity of fipronil, compared to chlorpyrifos, was determined for the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), and American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.). Fipronil and Combat bait matrices were evaluated for their attractancies to both species. In the topical toxicity tests, LD50's of fipronil, at 72 h after topical application, were 0.03 and 0.02 µg/g for adult B. germanica and P. americana, respectively. Fipronil was significantly more toxic than topically applied chlorpyrifos (LD50's were 0.06 and 0.16 µg/g for B. germanica and P. americana, respectively). The oral toxicity of fipronil and chlorpyrifos in Petri dish experiments, against both species, was affected by stage (for B. germanica), diet concentration, and feeding assay. Fipronil caused higher mortality of B. germanica than chlorpyrifos in two feeding assays (continuous and abbreviated). Both compounds were equally toxic to adult males of P. americana at all rates. Fipronil caused higher nymphal mortality than chlorpyrifos 48–72 h after exposure in both feeding assays. In large population chamber tests, fipronil bait was more effective and faster in killing P. americana than Raid and Combat. LT50's were 0.8, 2.4, and 7.6 d for fipronil, Raid (a.i. = chlorpyrifos), and Combat (a.i. = hydramethylnon) baits, respectively. Mortality reached 96.5, 93.4, and 84.6%, respectively, at the end of the 14 d test. In the bait attractancy tests, both strains of B. germanica were attracted similarly to fipronil and Combat bait matrices. P. americana were attracted more to fipronil than to Combat bait matrix or to other alternative foods.  相似文献

Ovary contents and insemination status were examined in overwintered queens of Vespa mandarinia that were collected using bait traps in Ibaraki Prefecture, eastern Japan. Catches in the traps occurred from late April to early July in 1999, though they were few or rather sporadic in and after June. Fertilization rates were 100% in 1999, and 93% in 1998 when a preliminary sampling was made. While the ovary index (number of eggs with size equal to or larger than adjacent nurse cells) of queens caught on the first few collection dates was small, it rapidly increased up to late May. Generalized linear model analyses showed that the ovary index depended both on collection date and the size (head width) of the queens. Mature eggs were almost absent in their ovaries before early May, whereas more than 70% of the queens had one or more mature eggs on and after May 10, suggesting the onset of nesting in early May.  相似文献

Four entomopathogenic nematode species, Steinernema carpocapsae, S. feltiae, Heterorhabditis bacteriophoraand H. megidis, were tested in a petri dish assay against larvae and adults of the hairy fungus beetle Typhaea stercorea. In general, adults were less susceptible than larvae and the LC50 decreased with the duration of the exposure to nematodes. S. carpocapsae was the most effective species against adult beetles (LC50 after 96 hours exposure =67 nematodes/adult). Against larvae S.carpocapsae and H. megidis were comparablyeffective with an LC50 of 30 and 55nematodes/larvae, respectively. S. carpocapsaewas tested at 70 and 100% RH against adults in baits of either chicken feed or crushed wheat, both supplemented with horticultural capillary matting pieces in order to obtain a wet weight of 50–60%. At70% RH no significant effect of the nematodes was obtained due to desiccation of the bait. In chickenfeed at 100% RH the mortality reached 80% with 500nematodes/adult. In wheat significant mortality was obtained only at 5000 nematodes/adult. Heavy growth of mould probably limited the nematode infection. When the bait was used in tube traps, desiccation and growth of mould was prevented, but nematode efficacy dropped to 4.4% in the traps and 12% in the surrounding litter. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic fungi are important natural enemies of insects. However, there is little information on the insect‐suppressive potential of these fungi and possible effects of farming management on this. Meanwhile, changes in natural landscapes due to agricultural intensification have caused considerable biodiversity loss and consequent decay of ecosystem services. However, the adoption of practices such as agroforestry in agroecosystems can foster abiotic and biotic conditions that conserve biodiversity, consequently restoring the provision of ecosystems services. Here, we assessed the effect of management systems (agroforestry or full‐sun) on the pest‐suppressive potential of entomopathogenic fungi in Brazilian coffee plantations. We used the insect bait method coupled with survival analyses to assess the speed of kill by entomopathogenic fungi and their presence in soil samples from both farming systems. We found that insects exposed to agroforestry soils died more quickly than insects exposed to full‐sun soils. Of the fungi isolated from the bait insects, Metarhizium was found most frequently, followed by Beauveria. Meanwhile, Fusarium was frequently isolated as primary or secondary infections. We propose that the differential survival of insects is indicative of a greater suppressive potential by entomopathogenic fungi in agroforestry, and that this could be promoted by the diversified landscape, microclimatic stability, and reduced soil disturbance in agroforestry systems. Furthermore, our results provide a useful demonstration of the potential use of the insect bait method to investigate pest‐suppressive potential through bait insect mortality, and we term this the “bait survival technique.”  相似文献

The mixing of an insecticide with sugar solution creates an oral toxin or insecticidal sugar bait (ISB) useful for reducing adult insect populations. The ability of ISBs to kill the biting midge Culicoides sonorensis Wirth and Jones (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), a vector of bluetongue virus, epizootic hemorrhagic disease and vesicular stomatitis viruses, was tested. The commercial insecticide formulations (percentage active ingredient) tested included bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, permethrin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and spinosad. Mortality rates were determined for various concentrations of commercial formulations (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 1, 2 and 3%) and observed at 1, 4, 10 and 24 h post‐exposure to the ISB. In the first set of assays, laboratory‐reared midges were fed sugar ad libitum and then exposed to insecticide‐treated sugar solutions to measure mortality. The second assay assessed competitive feeding: midges were provided with a control sugar solution (10% sucrose) in one vial, and a sugar and insecticide solution in another. Pyrethroid treatments resulted in the greatest mortality in the first hour at the lowest concentrations and spinosad consumption resulted in the least mortality. Biting midges were not deterred from feeding on the 1% ISB solutions despite the presence of an insecticide‐free alternative source of sugar.  相似文献
