Summary N-serve (2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine) was tested as an inhibitor of nitrification of ammonium or urea in sand cultures. Nitrification was reduced but not prevented by N-Serve present at between 5 and 20 ppm in solution or by weight of sand. In the presence of root debris and acetone, used in some experiments at 2–4 ml/l of nutrient to convey N-Serve, denitrification was stimulated under the same conditions and resulted in loss of a large proportion of nitrate, probably mainly as gaseous products and some nitrite. These losses were greater when N-serve was also present. There was also conversion of nitrate to an insoluble form in the sand. A smaller proportional loss of nitrate occurred in other treatments in the presence of root debris when N-Serve was added without acetone, either as the commercial formulation 24E or as a solid. Thus, using N-Serve to inhibit nitrification may encourage denitrifying organisms especially in the presence of carbon sources including root debris or acetone. Large decreases of nitrate reductase activity in plants produced by using N-Serve in the presence of ammonium or urea were caused as much by losses of nitrate in the presence of acetone as by prevention of nitrate formation. Other N-Serve treatments (solid or 24E) decreased enzyme induction by between 50 and 90 per cent as a result mainly of reduced nitrification.  相似文献

Synopsis The interaction of fluctuating water level and the Long Point topography is discussed with regard to the formation of lake-shore lagoons and their subsequent invasion by fishes. The species composition of fish communities in these lagoons was determined by 12 collections from lagoons (23 m2 to 25 ha) which yielded 33 fish species. The relationship of the number of fish species to lagoon area was lognormal; that is, with increasing lagoon area the number of species rose rapidly at first but soon decreased sharply, probably limited by the number of species capable of surviving in the habitat. The marked effect of area on species number in small lagoons is considered in the context of a hypothetical seasonal pattern of occasional invasion and continuous extinction.A sequence of reproductive guilds was found. In beach lagoons psammophils and lithophils were dominant. In a large vegetated lagoon in the interior phytophils and speleophils were dominant. This sequence was paralleled by an increase in the proportion of guarding and nesting species in the communities. The sequence was disrupted in the small interior lagoons where adaptations for survival were more important than reproductive strategy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The population biology of Anthocharis cardamines (L.) is described and shown to vary with locality. Southern and Western populations emerge earlier than Northern ones, but Western and Northern populations occupy similar, wetter habitats and are associated primarily with Cardamine pratensis (L.). Southern populations are recorded mostly from Alliaria petiolata (Bieb.).
  • 2 Studies on egg and larval survival indicate that host plant-induced death and parasitization by a tachinid are important mortality factors. However, a key-factor analysis on one population indicates that the major determinant of population size may be the number of eggs laid by ovipositing females, itself dependent upon weather during the oviposition period. Populations in different localities do show similar trends in abundance, corroborating the effect of weather.
  • 3 Human effects on distribution and abundance are discussed, and some conservation strategies suggested.

Stone loach and bullhead were given a choice of Chironomus and Asellus prey in experiments using solitary fish and fish in company. Solitary fish ate more than fish in company. The effect of light and substratum type on feeding was investigated. Both species ate more prey items on gravel than silt when a significant difference was observed. Bullhead ate more than loach in the light on both substrata. The only experiment in which loach ate more than bullhead was on a silt substratum in the dark. It is concluded that these two species utilise different components of the available food resources in chalk streams by adopting different habitats.  相似文献

The stomach contents were analyzed monthly for each year-class to elucidate the foraging pattern of bluegills in a small vegetated lake by the frequency occurrence and the points methods. Seasonal dietary changes of the year-classes were considered comparing the monthly fluctuations in abundance of major prey organisms. Though these bluegills are dietary generalists and opportunists like those in North America, their foraging pattern was characterized by a relatively clearer dietary shift during ontogeny and a wider food niche including piscivorous than those of bluegills with congeners in their home land. Therefore this finding provides evidence of the ecological release caused by the absence of congeners.  相似文献

Selection of habitat to avoid predation may affect the diet of young-of-year (YOY) lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). YOY lake trout may use inshore habitat to avoid predation; this habitat may be sub-optimal for growth. To test this, YOY lake trout were penned in nearshore and offshore pelagic areas of two arctic lakes. Toolik Lake had a lake trout population, the other lake, S6, did not. YOY lake trout in Toolik Lake lost weight, but those offshore lost less weight. The YOY lake trout in Lake S6 gained weight and those offshore gained more weight. The primary diet item of the YOY lake trout in both lakes during this experiment was the zooplankter Diaptomis probilofensis; it was also one of the most abundant species. However, its density inshore in Lake S6 was similar to inshore and offshore densities in Toolik Lake. The increased availability of alternative zooplankton prey in Lake S6 may account for the growth differential of YOY lake trout in Lake S6 relative to Toolik Lake. Bioenergetic modeling of YOY lake trout suggests that growth similar to that in the offshore of Lake S6 would be necessary for successful recruitment. If the reduced zooplankton availability in Toolik Lake leads to the reduced growth of YOY in the inshore and offshore pelagic areas, then these fish will be more susceptable to winter predation/starvation. For YOY lake trout to survive in Toolik Lake they most likely shift to feeding on benthic prey before the end of their first summer. Dept. of Chemical Engineering  相似文献

Urinary iodine excretion was assessed in 642 healthy children aged 10 mo (n=243), 2 yr (n=183), and 4 yr (n=216) living in the Paris area and originating from continental France (60.3%), North Africa (13.8%), the West Indies (9.1%), West Africa (8.3%), Southeast Asia (4.8%), and southern Europe (3.8%). Mild impairment of neurological (reflexes, tone, audiometry) and intellectual development (Brunet-Lézine scale) was assessed in relation to iodine status. Iodine excretions (median values) were 18.4, 11.9, and 10.9 μg/100 mL at 10 mo, 2 yr, and 4 yr, respectively, and risk of mild iodine deficiency (5–10 μg/100 mL) was 18.1%, 34.8%, and 38.3% for the same age groups. No relationship was found between anthropometry, global development quotient, and iodine status. High hearing thresholds were more commonly associated with lower iodine excretion, suggesting mild hearing defects. In spite of iodine prophylaxis, the risk of mild to moderate iodine deficiency still exists in France and in a number of European countries. Evaluation of neurological sequels of borderline iodine status is a major public health problem in European communities.  相似文献

Summary The effect of clustering behaviour on metabolism, body temperature, thermal conductance and evaporative water loss was investigated in speckled mousebirds at temperatures between 5 and 36°C. Within the thermal neutral zone (approximately 30–35 °C) basal metabolic rate of clusters of two birds (32.5 J·g-1·h-1) and four birds (28.5 J·g-1·h-1) was significantly lower by about 11% and 22%, respectively, than that of individuals (36.4 J·g-1·h-1). Similarly, below the lower critical temperature, the metabolism of clusters of two and four birds was about 14% and 31% lower, respectively, than for individual birds as a result of significantly lower total thermal conductance in clustered birds. Body temperature ranged from about 36 to 41°C and was positively correlated with ambient temperature in both individuals and clusters, but was less variable in clusters. Total evaporative water loss was similar in individuals and clusters and averaged 5–6% of body weight per day below 30°C in individuals and below 25°C in clusters. Above these temperatures total evaporative water loss increased and mousebirds could dissipate between 80 and 90% of their metabolic heat production at ambient temperatures between 36 and 39°C. Mousebirds not only clustered to sleep between sunset and sunrise but were also observed to cluster during the day, even at high ambient temperature. Whereas clustering at night and during cold, wet weather serves a thermoregulatory function, in that it allows the brrds to maintain body temperature at a reduced metabolic cost, clustering during the day is probably related to maintenance of social bonds within the flock.Abbreviations BMR basal metabolic rate - bw body weight - C totab total thermal conductance - EWI evaporative water loss - M metabolism - RH relative humidity - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - T ch chamber temperature - T cl cluster temperature - TEWL total evaporative water loss - LCT lower critical temperature - TNZ thermal neutral zone  相似文献

Summary Body protein sparing during starvation has been examined in fat and lean Svalbard ptarmigan. Protein utilization was determined from daily N excretion and from the rate of decrease in body mass. Changes in plasma concentrations of -hydroxybutyrate, free fatty acids, glucose, and uric acid were also recorded. When fat birds were starved for 15 days protein catabolism initially fell (phase I) and was thereafter kept low (phase II). This was evident from the temporal pattern in both N excretion and body mass loss. In two birds, N excretion eventually increased, revealing enhanced protein catabolism and thus a third phase of starvation. Changes in protein utilization were paralleled by changes in plasma uric acid. Approximately 9% of the energy demand was covered by breakdown of body protein during phase II. The importance of fat catabolism in providing energy was indicated by markedly elevated plasma levels of -hydroxybutyrate and free fatty acids. When lean birds were starved for 5 days there appeared to be no phase II. The temporal pattern of body mass loss indicated phase I and III but that of N excretion only phase III. The relative contribution of body protein to energy demand increased from 22% at day 2 to 41% at the end of starvation and was paralleled by increased plasma uric acid. When data from lean and fat birds were pooled, the changes in uric acid and N excretion were highly correlated (r=0.92, P<0.001), indicating that plasma uric acid is a reliable index of protein breakdown in starving Svalbard ptarmigan. In conclusion, starving fat Svalbard ptarmigan have a much greater capacity to spare body protein than lean birds. Fat birds effectively reduce protein catabolism and maintain this at a low level whereas starving lean birds increase protein catabolism.Abbreviations -OHB -hydroxybutyrate - BM body mass - BMR basal metabolic rate; dne daily nitrogen excretion - FFA free fatty acids - MR metabolic rate  相似文献

Modifications in a zoo exhibit were made to increase the arboreality of an aged female diana monkey, and to increase her use of the central portion of the exhibit where a new food shelf had been added. Branches, which formed ramps to this shelf, also were added. Following these changes, the aged female's arboreality increased slightly, and her use of the central portion of the exhibit increased significantly. Changes in habitat use following these modifications also were noted in the other two diana monkeys in the group. These results suggest that zoo habitats can be made more usable for individuals whose behavioral capabilities might be limited due to age or physical disability.  相似文献
