In the present study we apply a comparative approach, in combination with experimentation, to study behavior of two parasitoid species that attack caterpillar hosts with different feeding strategies (gregarious or solitary). In a semifield setup, consisting of clean cabbage plants and plants infested with one of two host species, the foraging behavior of the specialistCotesia rubecula, on obligate parasitoid of solitarily feedingPieris rapae larvae, was compared to that of the generalistCotesia glomerata, a polyphagous parasitoid of several Pieridae species (mainly the gregariously feedingPieris brassicae).Cotesia glomerata displayed equal propensity to search for and parasitize larvae of both host species. AlthoughC. glomerata exhibited a relatively plastic foraging behavior in that it searched differently under different host distribution conditions, its behavior seems more adapted to search for gregariously feeding hosts. Females exhibited a clear area-restricted search pattern and were more successful in finding the gregariously feeding caterpillars.Cotesia rubecula showed a higher propensity to search forP. rapae than forP. brassicae, i.e., females left the foraging setup significantly earlier when their natural hostP. rapae was not present.C. rubecula showed a more fixed foraging behavior, which seems adapted to foraging for solitarily feeding host larvae. In a setup with onlyP. rapae larvae, the foraging strategies of the two parasitoid species were quite similar. In a choice situationC. glomerata did not show a preference for one of the host species, whileCotesia rubecula showed a clear preference for its natural host species. The latter was shown by several behavioral parameters such as the number of first landings, allocation of search time, and percentage parasitization.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH) synthesis by the corpora allata of gregarious and solitarious phase females of Schistocerca gregaria was determined in vitro during the penultimate and last stadia as well as during the first gonotrophic period of adults. Generally, the corpora allata of solitarious females showed higher rates of JH synthetic activity. In addition, in adult females there was a temporal difference between the corpora allata activities of gregarious and solitarious locusts, the latter exhibiting relatively higher rates of JH synthesis early in the first gonotrophic period. The corpus allatum volumes of solitarious females were also generally larger than those of their gregarious counterparts; there was no synchrony between fluctuations in JH synthetic activity and changes in corpus allatum volume in either phase.The early onset of relatively high JH synthetic rates in solitarious females was correlated with the early detection, by rocket immunoelectrophoresis, of vitellogenin in the haemolymph and vitellin in the oöcytes. Vitellogenin appeared in the haemolymph on day 4 in solitarious females and on day 6 in gregarious females and vitellin appeared in the oöcytes on days 6 and 8 respectively. Oöcyte length at which vitellogenesis was first detected was 1.8 mm for gregarious and 1.3 mm for solitarious females. However, despite the accelerated onset of both vitellogenin synthesis and uptake, oöcyte maturation time of solitarious females was longer. In both gregarious and solitarious females, vitellogenin titres increased until oöcytes reached a length of about 4 mm and declined thereafter. Vitellin content of ovaries increased proportionately to oöcyte growth until they attained a length of 5.0 mm. The subsequent increase in length of oöcytes to maturity is attributed to postvitellogenic growth, possibly by hydration.  相似文献

Anaphes victus Huber andAnaphes listronoti Huber (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are respectively solitary and gregarious egg parasitoids of the carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). We made detailed ethograms of the oviposition behavior on unparasitized and parasitized hosts for the two species. We then compared the behavior of virgin and mated females for the oviposition of male and female progenies. The two species did not always oviposit after insertion of the ovipositor, but these punctures without oviposition could be readily differentiated from oviposition.A. victus oviposited only once by puncture, whileA. listronoti deposited one to three eggs during the same sequence. The variability of the duration of the various components was generally lower for a given female than between females. Two components, the abdominal vibrations and the pause, were significantly shorter in ovipositions that resulted in male progency for the two species. However, an important overlap in duration prevents using these differences to sex the progeny at oviposition. Virgin females of both species, although capable of producing only males, exhibited both behaviors. Parasitized hosts were recognized through internal and external markings that were used in host discrimination.  相似文献

Larvae of Dendrocerus carpenteri Curtis (Hymenoptera: Megaspilidae) develop as solitary ectoparasitoids on the prepupae and pupae of primary aphid parasitoids inside the aphid mummy. First instars are aggressive and kill potential competitors; however, facultative gregarious development of two, and occasionally three, larvae may occur under superparasitism. To test the hypothesis that gregarious larvae share host resources equally, adult dry mass is compared between three brood types: ‘double’ mummies containing (i) two males; (ii) two females; or (iii) one male plus one female, respectively. Resource rivalry varies with the sex of the competing larvae. Surviving adults differ significantly in size if both wasps are of the same sex, male or female. A minimum amount of resources is required for a larva to be viable; this threshold does not differ between sexes and is independent of the sex of a competing larva. The outcome of competition between a male larva and a female larva varies with the amount of the available resources, with neither sex being inherently dominant over the other. Females are eight times more likely to be larger than a male competitor if the amount of host resources is ≥0.116 mg, whereas males can win over a female competitor in terms of adult size if the available resources are <0.116 mg. It is suggested that rivalry between larvae for limiting host resources constrains the transition from solitary to gregarious development and should be considered in studies of parasitoid life‐history evolution.  相似文献

Previously, we reported a chain of effects induced by phenylacetonitrile, the gregarious‐phase adult cohesion pheromone of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), on conspecific hoppers. Specifically, the nymphs became hyperactive and displayed high levels of intraspecific predation, as surviving individuals gradually shifted to the solitary phase. The findings suggested that the pheromone could induce a significant level of mortality of the nymphs and predispose them to greater sensitivity to lower doses of insecticides. In this study, we compared the effects of the pheromone and various doses of three pesticides (fipronil, malathion, and carbosulfan) to pheromone‐exposed and unexposed crowd‐reared hoppers in semi‐field enclosures. The pheromone on its own displayed a high level of cumulative mortality of the nymphs (89%). Although combinations with fractional pesticide doses gave control efficiencies that were, in most cases, higher than with individual pesticides, pheromonal and pesticidal effects were only partially complementary, probably because of the feeding‐deterrent effects of the pesticides and the resulting reduction in cannibalism. However, our results demonstrate the possibility of significantly reducing the levels of pesticides used in hopper control and, thus, their negative environmental effects.  相似文献

Summary  The tree species Berlinia korupensis Mackinder & Burgt is described as new. The species is endemic to the southern part of Korup National Park in Cameroon. Seventeen trees have been found so far, the largest being 42 m high and having a trunk diam. of 88 cm. The new species is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR D) under the criteria of IUCN. Two distribution maps are included; one map indicating the single locality in Cameroon near the Nigerian border where the new species was found and another map of the permanent plot where 14 of the 17 trees were recorded. A line drawing is also included, along with colour photographs of the flowers and the trunk.

In the new world tropics there is an extravagant array of sympatric butterfly mimicry rings. This is puzzling under strictly coevolutionary (Müllerian) mimicry: all unpalatable species should converge as ‘co-mimics' to the same pattern. If mimicry has usually evolved in unpalatable species by one-sided (Batesian) evolution, however, it is easy to see that mimicry rings centred on different models could remain distinct. If mimicry rings were also segregated by habitat, a diversity of mimicry rings could be stabilized. In this paper we report correlations between behaviour and mimicry of nine unpalatable Heliconius species. It is already known that co-mimics fly in similar habitats, and non-mimics fly in different habitats, although there is much overlap. Contrary to a previous report, we find little difference in flight heights of heliconiine mimicry rings; all species fly from ground level to the canopy. However, co-mimics roost at night in similar habitats and at similar heights above the ground, but in different habitats and at different heights from species in other mimicry rings. Heliconius (especially the erato taxonomic group) are renowned for roosting gregariously; and co-mimics roost gregariously with each other more often than with non-mimics. Gregarious roosting is therefore common between species, as well as within species. There are thus strong links between mimicry and behavioural ecology in Heliconius. The paradoxical correlation between nocturnal roosting and visual mimicry is presumably explained by bird predation at dusk when roosts are forming, or at dawn before they have disbanded. Direct evidence of predation is lacking, but there are high rates of disturbance by birds at these times. These results, together with knowledge of the phylogeny of Heliconius, suggest that species from the melpomene-group of Heliconius have radiated to occupy mimetic niches protected by model species in the Ithomiinae and the erato-group of Heliconius. A variety of sympatric mimicry rings is apparently maintained because key models fail to converge, while more rapidly-evolving unpalatable mimics evolve towards the colour patterns of the models. The maintenance of mimetic diversity would be aided by the habitat and behavioural differences between mimicry rings revealed here, provided that different predators are found in different habitats. This explanation for the maintenance of multiple mimicry rings is more plausible for Heliconius mimicry than alternatives based on visual mating constraints, thermal ecology, or camouflage.  相似文献
