Aim This study addresses how species resolve environmental differences into biological habitats at multiple, interacting spatial scales. How do patterns of local habitat use change along an elevation gradient? How do patterns of local habitat partitioning interact with partitioning at a landscape scale? Location Northern and southern Lesser Antilles islands, West Indies. Methods We document how Anolis Daudin, 1802 lizards partition habitat locally at sites along a landscape‐scale elevation gradient. We examine habitat partitioning both with and without interspecific interactions in the predominately flat northern Lesser Antilles islands and in the more mountainous southern islands. Results Anoles partition local habitat along perch‐height and microclimate axes. Northern‐group sympatric anoles partition local habitat by perch height and have overlapping distributions at the landscape scale. Southern‐group sympatric anoles partition local habitat by microclimate and specialize in particular habitats at the landscape scale. In both the northern and southern groups, species use different perch heights and microclimates only in areas of species overlap along the elevation gradient. Main conclusions We demonstrate the interaction between local‐ and landscape‐scale habitat partitioning. In the case of microclimate partitioning, the interaction results from the use of thermal physiology to partition habitat at multiple scales. This interaction prompts the question of whether habitat partitioning developed ‘local‐out’ or ‘landscape‐in’. We pose this dichotomy and present a framework for its resolution.  相似文献

For the first time, Thorson's rule, that non-pelagic development increases with latitude, is shown to apply to a group of marine parasites. Relative and absolute numbers of species of viviparous Monogenea, gill parasites of fish, increase with increasing latitude. The gradient can be explained by the inability, in cold waters, of (a) free larvae to locate suitable habitats (hosts) and/ or (b) small invertebrates to produce pelagic larvae in sufficient numbers. Viviparous Monogenea are also more common in cold than in warm freshwater, but have not been fund in the deep sea.  相似文献

Incubation experiments were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of extracting phosphorus from soil by embedding iron oxide-impregnanted filter paper strips (Pi strips) in soils having a wide range in pH, texture, and extractable-P contents. Under flooded conditions, the amount of P extracted by the Pi strips increased with the period of submergence and embedding time of the Pi strips. Under unsaturated conditions, the Pi strips were found to extract P from soils over a wide range in moisture conditions; however, keeping the soil at moisture level between saturation and field capacity was found to result in maximal sorption of P by the strips. An embedding time of 16 h was found to be adequate.Phosphorus extracted by embedding Pi strips in soil columns for 16 h at field capacity moisture level correlated significantly with P extracted by shaking the soil with 0.01 M CaCl2 solution and a Pi strip for 16 h in the laboratory (r=0.94**). The P extracted by embedding Pi strips correlated best with Bray 1 P in acid soils (r=0.97**) and with Olsen P in alkaline and calcareous soils (r=0.96**). The results of the studies demonstrate the feasibility of developing a nondestructive method of monitoring changes in plant-available P in situ under field conditions.  相似文献

An apparatus was made for automatic replenishment of water lost by evapotranspiration in pot experiments. The system can handle 80 pots. The upper and lower weight limit for each pot, and the weighing frequency can be set. In this way, constant soil moisture levels as well as fluctuations can be arranged. The apparatus can be programmed for continuous cycling, thus minimizing position effects within an experiment. Cumulative daily water use per pot or transpiration per plant is recorded on tape and printed. Special applications, e.g. controlled nutrient dosage and determination of transpiration coefficients are discussed.  相似文献

Summary We have used denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to identify genomic DNA polymorphism in maize (Zea mays L.). DGGE probes detect polymorphism in maize at a frequency comparable to the incidence of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Probes identifying polymorphism were mapped to maize chromosome arms by utilizing DGGE and maize lines carrying B-A chromosomal translocations. The methods for library construction, probe screening, and genome analysis, described here for maize, can also be applied to the genomic analysis of other organisms.  相似文献

Canopy CO2-exchange rates (CER), air temperatures, and dew points were measured throughout ten days during the 1987 growing season for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench], and five soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] cultivars, and throughout seven days in 1988, on maize (Zea maize L.). The objective was to determine if the decline in CER per unit light during the afternoon is associated with a vapor pressure deficit (VPD) increase. Some of the soybean and maize plots were kept as dry as possible. A VPD term significantly contributed (P0.05) to a canopy CER regression model in 54 of 80 data sets in 1987. Grain sorghum was less sensitive than the well-watered soybean genotypes to an increasing VPD (P0.05) on three of the ten measurement days and less sensitive than cotton (P0.05) on only one day. Cotton demonstrated less VPD sensitivity than soybean (P0.05) on one day. The moisture stressed soybean plots showed a greater CER sensitivity to VPD (P0.05) than the well-watered soybean plots. In 1988, the frequently irrigated maize plots were less sensitive to VPD (P0.05) than the rain-fed plots early in the season, before the rain-fed plots were excessively damaged by moisture stress. These results indicate that the afternoon declines in canopy CER found in a number of different species are associated with increases in the VPD; recent work of others suggests that this may be due to partial stomatal closure.Abbreviations CER carbon dioxide exchange rate - VPD vapor pressure deficit - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - DAP days after planning  相似文献

Mg-ATPase and Torpedo Cholinergic Synaptic Vesicles   总被引:8,自引:7,他引:1  
The reported presence of Mg-ATPase activity in cholinergic synaptic vesicles from the electric organ of Torpedo marmorata was reinvestigated in view of possible contamination of vesicles by other subcellular fractions. After dilution in concentrated sucrose, the vesicular fraction isolated on a sedimentation sucrose gradient was purified further on a flotation density gradient. It appears that this treatment allows separation of the vesicles according to their content. The two vesicular content markers, acetylcholine and ATP, are recovered as sharp coincident peaks at a density close to 0.48 M sucrose. Empty vesicles are identified in denser regions by the protein pattern on gel electrophoresis which is identical to the pattern obtained for filled vesicles. Refractionation of vesicles depleted of their acetylcholine content by valinomycin leads to an extreme picture, with a massive shift of the vesicles toward denser regions. We have then shown that a ouabain-insensitive Mg-ATPase is indeed associated with the vesicle membrane, but the activity is fully apparent only when vesicles are permeabilized either as the result of the fractionation procedure or after detergent treatment. The relative insensitivity of the Mg-ATPase associated with the synaptic vesicles to oligomycin, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and azide indicates that this enzyme differs from the classic F1F0 mitochondrial enzyme. The most striking finding is the sensitivity to vanadate of the vesicular Mg-ATPase, which suggests the involvement of a phosphorylated intermediate. On the basis of both the difference in inhibitor sensitivity between untreated and detergent-treated vesicles and of the pronase experiments, the possibility that the enzyme has an inward orientation is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The effects of temperature and soil moisture levels on the chemical composition of wheat forage grown in growth chambers were studied. In addition to the environmental variables, K and N fertilization effects were studied. In all the studies, increasing levels of K fertilization depressed the Mg and Ca concentration of the shoots. Nitrogen fertilization increased the Mg concentration but had no effect on the Ca concentration of the plants. N fertilization depressed the K concentration in the soil moisture experiment, but had no effect on K concentration in the temperature experiment. Increasing the temperature from 10 to 20°C did not affect the Mg and Ca concentration of the shoots, but the K concentration declined due to dilution effects caused by the greater yield at the higher temperature. In the soil moisture level experiment the K, Mg and Ca concentration in wheat tended to decline with soil moisture level due to dilution effects. Calculations showed that uptake of K was regulated primarily by diffusion of K from the soil to the plant root and that the uptake of Mg was regulated by the uptake process of the plant root and not by the nutrient transport process through the soil.This study was part of the program of the Center for Root-Soil Research. Summary The potential of alley cropping maize and cowpea with the giant Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) de Wit) cultivar K-28 was studied on an Entisol (Psammentic Ustorthent) in Southern Nigeria. In this trial the crops were grown in 4 m wide alleys formed by periodically pruned leucaena hedgerows. The effect of application of leucaena prunings, nitrogen fertilizer and tillage was studied.Despite the very intensive pruning regime (five prunings/year) for a six-year period, the leucaena hedgerows continue to produce substantial amounts of prunings, nitrogen yield and stakes. Application of nitrogen to the maize crop increased dry matter and nitrogen yield from the leucaena prunings. Although high nitrogen yield was obtained from the prunings, the application of low nitrogen rates was still needed for obtaining a high maize yield. Maize grain yield can be sustained at about 2.0 t/ha with continuous application of leucacna prunings only. Without application of leucaena prunings and nitrogen maize yield continued to decline with subsequent croppings. Cowpea grain yield was not affected either by leucaena prunings or by residual nitrogen. Tillage (rototilling) resulted in either higher or the same maize and cowpea yields as compared with no-tillage.Application of leucaena prunings resulted in higher soil moisture retention, organic matter, exchangeable K, Ca, Mg, and also nitrate levels in the soil solution. Leucaena and maize appear to extract soil moisture from different zones in the soil. Timely pruning of hedgerows is necessary to minimize shading.  相似文献
