Female transfer is common in mountain gorillas, but most adult females reside with female relatives for at least some of their lives. In four mountain gorilla social groups, co-resident relatives had higher rates of affiliative interaction and lower rates of aggressive interaction, and were more tolerant of each other, than non-relatives. These differences were greater for maternal than for paternal relatives. Non-relatives typically had few affiliative interactions, but some (mostly but not entirely long-term co-residents) had friendly relationships. Females showed reciprocity in affiliative behavior. Long-term residents in two groups maintained less tolerant relationships with more recent immigrants than with each other and than did most pairs of immigrants. The effects of relatedness and residence status on relationships may sometimes be complementary because both factors can lead to similar reproductive interests. A potential exists for some resemblance between female-female social relationships in mountain gorillas and those in female-bonded primate species. However, even female relatives usually spend little time interacting socially with each other, and the benefits of relationships with males outweigh those of relationships with other females. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to develop a relatively noninvasive technique for generating ovulatory estrogen levels in cycling females over extended periods of time. Eleven intact cycling rhesus macaques were given weekly injections of estradiol cypionate in an effort to obtain weekly levels which approximated ovulatory levels. A dose of 500 μg generated weekly estrogen values averaging 370 ± 18 pg/ml. This method is a satisfactory alternative to more traditional techniques. It involves no surgical procedures, it is relatively nonintrusive, it does not terminate a female's reproductive career, and it is not as time-consuming as daily injections. Female cycle state can be altered with a minimum of manipulation for studies involving the behavior of estrous females.  相似文献

Serum and blood cell δ13C and δ15N signals from 26 suckling pups of the South American sea lion from northern Patagonia were used as proxies of the composition of their mothers' diet to test the hypothesis that the foraging habits of the mother influence pup growth. Samples of primary producers and the female potential prey were analyzed to establish baseline isotopic values and to determine energy density. Pups were weighed to determine specific growth rate. Individual variability in female diet was large, probably as a consequence of dissimilarities in the foraging performance that depends on the individual's age, body size, and/or foraging skills. Growth of a pup was influenced by its mother's diet, as pups of females mostly relying on pelagic offshore prey were found to grow faster than those of females basing their diet on benthic coastal prey.  相似文献

The behavioral and hormonal responses of squirrel monkeys of the Bolivian and Guyanese subspecies were compared after a group formation procedure. Two groups of each subspecies, consisting of five females and three males (later reduced to two) were observed daily during the week of group formation and for nine weeks following removal of a single male from each group. Measures of plasma cortisol were examined in the females after the initial group formation and after the groups were reduced by one male. The levels of plasma testosterone were assessed in all the males during the initial week of group formation. Linear dominance hierarchies were determined both within and across the sexes in both subspecies. The frequency and directionality of low-level aggressive interactions indicated that females of the Bolivian subspecies were dominant to the males, while the males of the Guyanese subspecies ranked over all the females. Additionally, the Bolivian squirrel monkey females showed an elevation of plasma cortisol on the day of group formation, which declined 48 hr later, then reelevated after the groups were reduced by one male and declined gradually over a nine-week period. Guyanese females showed little change in cortisol levels during both periods. This suggests fundamental hormonal, as well as behavioral, differences between the two subspecies. The change in plasma testosterone levels in the males during the initial week of group formation was positively correlated with social status. Furthermore, differences in the dynamics within individual groups for each subspecies were reflected by the levels of plasma cortisol of the female members.  相似文献

Body masses of wild-caught habu,Trimeresurus flavoviridis, were measured with known error range. Habu larger than mature female size had steeper slope in length-mass regression than smaller individuals. Females outweighed males in most snout-ventlength classes and in early summer. Gravid females outweighed non-gravid ones by about 20% on the average, but the body mass ranges of the two groups overlapped. Through the body mass change in mature females, the proportion of gravid females was estimated to be about 0.5.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate differences in reproductive and body traits during successive parities between two genetic lines. The LP line was constituted by means of selection of animals having an extremely high number of parities (at least 25) and an average reproductive performance compared to the V line selected for litter size at weaning during 31 generations. The two lines were found to have an equal reproductive performance in the first three parities, but the LP line had higher reproductive performance from the fourth parturition onwards. The low reproductive performance after the third parity in the V line was suggested to be caused by constrained environmental conditions in the test station. A line by parity interaction was also observed for body weight, since body weight declined going from the third to the fourth parity in the LP line but not the V line. Thus, it was concluded that hyper selection for reproductive longevity and average prolificacy successfully delayed reproductive senescence, and that this newly founded line showed less environmental sensitivity, which might have been mediated by a higher body reserve.  相似文献

Social organization in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) appears to be based on a hierarchy of dominance, in which dominant females limit the reproductive functioning of subordinates. Reduced fertility was documented for captive but not for wild females. We investigated social dynamics and hormonal profiles of females living in a wild group. We collected behavioral and hormonal data during 7 mo from the reproductive and two nonreproductive adult females (probably daughters), and their interactions with the reproductive male. The subjects lived in a monogamous group at Nísia Floresta field station in northeastern Brazil. We collected behavioral data as all day follows, once a week and fecal material twice a week. We analyzed fecal samples for cortisol and progesterone using enzyme immuno assay (EIA) techniques. During the first three months we monitored the reproductive female (GRE) and the oldest nonreproductive female, (GIO). After the disappearence of GIO, we monitored the next oldest subordinate adult female, (GRA). GRE had just given birth at the beginning of the study, and she gave birth 6 mo later. During the last 2 weeks of GRE's gestation, GRA showed elevated progesterone levels, indicating ovarian cycling. Cortisol levels from GRE and GRA reached very high levels then. During GRA's cycling period, her interactions with the reproductive male (GT) were lower than when she was not cycling. We saw sexual interactions only between GT and GRE. The results provide evidence that ovarian function in mature subordinate females might be affected by the reproductive condition of the dominant female.  相似文献

The effect of food concentration on the life history of three types of Brachionus calyciflorus females (amictic, unfertilized mictic and fertilized mictic female) was studied with replicated individual cultures at 25 ° and at four food concentrations (1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 × 106 cells mL—1) of Scenedesmus obliquus. There were highly significant effects of both food concentration and female type, independently and in interaction on the duration of juvenile period of the rotifer, but neither were the effects on the duration of post‐reproductive period and mean life‐span. The duration of juvenile period of unfertilized mictic female at the food concentration of 9.0 × 106 cells mL—1 was the longest among all the food concentration‐female type combinations. Both food concentration and female type influenced significantly the duration of reproductive period and the number of eggs produced by each type of female per life cycle, respectively. There was, however, no significant interaction between food level and female type. Among the three types of females, the number of eggs produced by an unfertilized mictic female was the largest, and that of a fertilized mictic female was the smallest.  相似文献
