Abstract Aspidosperma quebracho‐blanco is found throughout the Chaco (17°?33°S) in Argentina, and it is the dominant tree species in the arid Chaco. Under the hypothesis that morpho‐physiological features of A. quebracho‐blanco change as a function of its geographical position on a water deficit gradient, it was predicted that with increasing water stress, leaf angles (specifically horizontal) would be greater and mean values of the leaf mass per area would increase. These leaf characteristics were compared at three points on a water deficit gradient extending from the humid Chaco through semi‐arid Chaco to the arid Chaco of Argentina (south‐west to north‐east rainfall gradient, from 350 to 1200 mm annual mean precipitation). Twig and leaf positions were modified and water potentials were measured at the highest heating hour of the day at a site of the arid Chaco. Daily and seasonal water potential variations of untreated twigs were also observed. Leaf angle modification towards horizontal produced more negative twig water potentials with respect to those of leaves in non‐horizontal positions. The comparison of the three sites along the gradient showed contrasting patterns of leaf‐angle frequency distribution of adults. In Chancaní (mean annual temperature: 18–24°C, mean annual precipitation: 450 mm, arid) there was a higher frequency of angles near 90° for non‐pendulous and about 270° for pendulous trees. Leaf angles in Copo (semi‐arid) and Chaco National Park (mean annual temperature: 20–23°C, mean annual precipitation: 1300 mm humid) were widely distributed with higher frequency towards the angles near 0° and 180°. This sclerophyllous tree species showed plasticity in its leaf traits along the precipitation gradient. Plasticity in leaf mass per area and leaf position enables plants to develop efficiently in contrasting environmental conditions of humidity and aridity.  相似文献

采用法瑞地植物学派的样地调查法记录了澜沧江中上游河谷中一独特的硬叶小叶常绿阔叶林类型——锈鳞木樨榄、清香木群丛。该群丛由南向北分布于1300~1900m的河谷下部,对群落外貌、生活型与生长型、植物种类科属的组成、分布区类型等进行了分析。结果表明:(1) 群落结构简单,物种数平均为18种;(2) 生活型以高位芽植物居多,生长型以草本居多;(3) 群落中计有维管植物116种,隶属于39科,84属;(4) 植物科级、属级水平上均显示出了热带性质,植物区系表现出一定的古老性,反映了与古地中海硬叶小叶林的历史渊源。该植物群丛适应澜沧江干热-干暖河谷气候,分布区域狭窄,是一类值得重点保护和深入研究的植被类型。  相似文献

Many arid grassland communities are changing from grass dominance to shrub dominance, but the mechanisms involved in this conversion process are not completely understood. Aeolian processes likely contribute to this conversion from grassland to shrubland. The purpose of this research is to provide information regarding how vegetation changes occur in an arid grassland as a result of aeolian sediment transport. The experimental design included three treatment blocks, each with a 25 × 50 m area where all grasses, semi-shrubs, and perennial forbs were hand removed, a 25 × 50 m control area with no manipulation of vegetation cover, and two 10 × 25 m plots immediately downwind of the grass-removal and control areas in the prevailing wind direction, 19° north of east, for measuring vegetation cover. Aeolian sediment flux, soil nutrients, and soil seed bank were monitored on each treatment area and downwind plot. Grass and shrub cover were measured on each grass-removal, control, and downwind plot along continuous line transects as well as on 5 × 10 m subplots within each downwind area over four years following grass removal. On grass-removal areas, sediment flux increased significantly, soil nutrients and seed bank were depleted, and Prosopis glandulosa shrub cover increased compared to controls. Additionally, differential changes for grass and shrub cover were observed for plots downwind of vegetation-removal and control areas. Grass cover on plots downwind of vegetation-removal areas decreased over time (2004-2007) despite above average rainfall throughout the period of observation, while grass cover increased downwind of control areas; P. glandulosa cover increased on plots downwind of vegetation-removal areas, while decreasing on plots downwind of control areas. The relationships between vegetation changes and aeolian sediment flux were significant and were best described by a logarithmic function, with decreases in grass cover and increases in shrub cover occurring with small increases in aeolian sediment flux.  相似文献

Changes in the terrestrial carbon cycle may ameliorate or exacerbate future climatic warming. Research on this topic has focused almost exclusively on abiotic drivers, whereas biotic factors, including trophic interactions, have received comparatively little attention. We quantified the singular and interactive effects of herbivore exclusion and simulated warming on ecosystem CO2 exchange over two consecutive growing seasons in West Greenland. Exclusion of caribou and muskoxen over the past 8 years has led to dramatic increases in shrub cover, leaf area, ecosystem photosynthesis, and a nearly threefold increase in net C uptake. These responses were accentuated by warming, but only in the absence of herbivores. Carbon cycle responses to herbivore exclusion alone and combined with warming were driven by changes in gross ecosystem photosynthesis, as limited differences in ecosystem respiration were observed. Our results show that large herbivores can be of critical importance as mediators of arctic ecosystem responses to climate change.  相似文献

生态重要性评价是识别重要生态功能区、优化区域空间开发格局的有效途径。本文提出了基于生态因子适宜性和生态区位重要性的分项评价、进行生态重要性整合分析的研究思路,以广西西江经济带为案例区,开展生态重要性评价及其与现状建设用地的空间叠置关系研究。结果表明,经济带极重要区、很重要区、重要区、一般区、不重要区所占比重分别为16%、36%、17%、15%、16%;西部地区重要性相对较高,东部地区重要性居中,中部地区重要性较低。已有城镇建设用地和农村居民点主要分布在不重要区、重要区和很重要区,工矿用地分布相对分散。依据重要性评价结果进行有选择、有导向的生态空间占用,可在一定程度上减轻区域工业化和城镇化所带来的生态环境压力,实现区域可持续发展。  相似文献

珍稀濒危植物长蕊木兰为国家Ⅰ级保护植物。然而,由于受研究尺度和分析方法的限制,对其种群生态特征等方面仍不清楚。以云南高黎贡山原生的中山湿性常绿阔叶林4 hm2样地调查数据为基础,应用Ripley的L函数分析了长蕊木兰种群的年龄结构与空间分布格局。研究发现:(1)长蕊木兰种群的年龄结构为反"J"型,属稳定型种群。(2)长蕊木兰种群个体的空间分布格局与空间尺度关系密切,空间尺度小于75 m时为聚集分布,大于75 m时为随机分布。生境异质性在长蕊木兰种群空间分布格局的形成中可能发挥了重要的作用。(3)不同发育阶段个体的空间分布格局存在明显的差异,中树和小树阶段的分布格局在中、小尺度上呈聚集分布,在较大尺度上呈随机分布;大树阶段在整个空间尺度上均呈现随机分布。(4)长蕊木兰不同发育阶段的空间关联性主要表现为中、小尺度上的负相关,在较大尺度上则趋向于无关联。  相似文献

 土壤氮磷养分对植物生长的限制性可通过植被的N∶P化学计量特征来反映。该研究以常绿阔叶林演替系列为对象,将N∶P作为诊断指标,揭示 常绿阔叶林次生演替过程中植物群落的N∶P化学计量特征和养分限制作用。结果显示:1)物种水平的N∶P大小不一,但演替系列总体的变化特 征表现出了较高的一致性。2)在群落水平上,次生演替初期的灌草丛N∶P极小(7.38),远远低于14,当演替进入灌丛阶段,N∶P 显著增高到 19.96,在进入演替中期的针叶林(14.29)和针阔混交林(14.21)时,N∶P显著下降到 14~16之间,演替中后期的木荷(Schima superba)群落 (18.77)和栲树(Castanopsis fargesii)群落(20.13)的N∶P发生了显著的升高过程 。根据以往对N∶P临界值的确定,可以认为,常绿阔叶林次 生演替初期的植物群落生产力主要受到氮素的限制作用;演替中期的针叶林和针阔混交林主要受氮磷的共同限制,但以氮素的限制作用更为强 烈;演替中后期植物群落主要受到土壤磷素的限制作用。  相似文献

Summary  A taxonomic revision of the palm genus Sclerosperma (Arecaceae) is presented. Three species are recognised: S. mannii H. Wendl., which is relatively widespread from Liberia to the Democratic Republic of Congo; S. walkeri A. Chev., which is apparently confined to the interior of Gabon and a band along the Congo River; and S. profiziana, a new species previously considered conspecific to S. mannii that is found in southwest Ghana, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. The taxonomic history, morphology, distribution and conservation status of the genus and each species are discussed.  相似文献

Grazing by domestic herbivores is generally recognized as a major ecological factor and an important evolutionary force in grasslands. Grazing has both extensive and profound effects on individual plants and communities. We investigated the response patterns of Polygonum viviparum species and the species diversity of an alpine shrub meadow in response to long-term livestock grazing by a field manipulative experiment controlling livestock numbers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Here, we hypothesize that within a range of grazing pressure, grazing can alter relative allocation to different plant parts without changing total biomass for some plant species if there is life history trade-offs between plant traits. The same type of communities exposed to different grazing pressures may only alter relative species' abundances or species composition and not vary species diversity because plant species differ in resistant capability to herbivory. The results show that plant height and biomass of different organs differed among grazing treatments but total biomass remained constant. Biomass allocation and absolute investments to both reproduction and growth decreased and to belowground storage increased with increased grazing pressure, indicating the increasing in storage function was attained at a cost of reducing reproduction of bulbils and represented an optimal allocation and an adaptive response of the species to long-term aboveground damage. Moreover, our results showed multiform response types for either species groups or single species along the gradient of grazing Intensity. Heavy grazing caused a 13.2% increase in species richness. There was difference in species composition of about 18%--20% among grazing treatment. Shannon-Wiener (H') diversity index and species evenness (E) index did not differ among grazing treatments.
